Sideboard

Maybeboard

Spirits need to have fun too!

Currently trying to figure out how to make this more competitive.

Background

Figured I'd take a commander that is almost never played and make them a deck of their very own. To be honest I was kind of pissed because 5 color spirits sounds like a cool idea, until you realize a majority of the big spirits kinda suck and Soulshift is meh.

Fun Mythology

What is a Kirin, also referred to as a Qilin? Kirin are believed to be a type of dragon covered in shining scales, either fully or partially. In many famous myths, Kirins are depicted as having heads or torsos enveloped in flames, but many also had light, feathery features. All are depicted with one or two horns, which lead to many Westerners calling them unicorns. They are considered to be extremely pure and benevolent, gliding among the clouds so that they never trample even a blade of grass. They become fierce when a kind or pure person is threatened by evil... But this one is just gonna blow shit up.

Strategy

The way this deck plays is basically if your opponents board ever gets out of hand, you nuke it, either completely or selectively. When that isn't an option, we go for low mana cost fliers that are buffed considerably by enchantments. CMC is our safe zone, there is only 1 card with a CMC of that can trigger our fluffy pony of destruction meaning in general, it is safe to have artifacts and enchantments of this mana cost. This is where you want to accumulate your wincons. But, just in case, there is a spirit/arcane spell that can trigger at any CMC from - and Shining Shoal which can hit any CMC. Then there's some stall cards thrown in to discourage attacking us while we're setting up our lethal fliers or working towards Avacyn, at which point we nuke everything.

If a certain enemy is progressing too fast, play politics. Drop a nice / drop while your Kirin is present to blow up mana rocks or utility cards. Decks that require many combo pieces or mana rocks to accelerate are gonna find it difficult to keep a board state.

Notable Interactions

Quicksilver Amulet lets you slip Spirits in when you don't want to nuke the board and get your -drop spirits out safely.

Door of Destinies can start getting really crazy when you count all the reanimation, recasting and spirit tokens. And as a huge plus, it has a CMC of , letting it dodge most of our removal.

Angel of Flight Alabaster is nice for getting back things we blow up, but specifically Kami of False Hope, Nikko-Onna and Selfless Spirit as combined with any of these, the Angel gives us repeatable fog, enchantment removal and creature protection respectively.

Suggestions are needed, appreciated and reciprocated

Feel free to post your deck in your comment and I'll gladly check it out and +1.

!!Notes!!

The sideboard cards are designed for token hate(or other archetype hate) because as they have a CMC of 0, there is no way for me to wipe them with my commander since the only 0 cost Arcane/Spirit spell is Blue. T_T

Sideboarding is fairly self explanatory. If you run into graveyard decks, taking out our cards that interact with the grave makes room for the hate. Angel of Flight Alabaster, Breath of Life , and Sigil of the New Dawn obviously are dead cards once we get Rest in Peace out which is probably the easiest graveyard hating card. Taking them all out allows for us to actually side in some rather mean cards designed to hose the decks that try to have more fun than us.

The deck can also be converted relatively easily to a pure Stax playstyle that is much more competitive so if you're interested in that, feel free to ask.

Updates Add

Decided to finally come back to this deck. Luckily, Shadows over Innistrad and Conspiracy 1-2 brought some fairly good spirits. I also revamped the deck to make it a little more competitive. This meant swapping out some of the less useful cards that were in just because they were spirits and introducing more engines and synergy. It also placed higher value on Arcane Instants like Shields of Velis Vel, Otherworldly Journey and Charge Across the Araba as instant speed wipes are far more valuable than some generic flier.

This sadly meant the deck had pull back on the token producing to make room, but tokens still make a very strong wincon with several cards. Cards in the Maybeboard are either things I'm considering, or cards that would be used in the alternate, stax heavy variant of this deck that I might whip up just for those who are deserving. ;)
