lol nevermind, after much play-testing, i realize that 4 AEther Vials is the way to go. Id rather start with it and draw a second one , then not start with it at all. thanks for the advice everyone!

I would suggest you add Merrow Commerce. It allows you to swing with your creatures and then untap at the end of your turn. You can use to block the your opponent's creatures

A Obelisk of Urd would be really good for Merfolk. I also suggest a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.

i was looking at the net deck on mtg top 8 and was trying to figure out what is the point of minamo and oboro? could someone please explain?

Having a variety of lands is good because alot of decks run Choke in their sideboards. Therefore you dont want to be running only basic lands. It's good to have a mix of both basics and non basics in your deck.

I'm here to say +1, and cudos for sticking to your guns about the Psionic Blasts. As a red player (forever), I've been contemplating blue decks to slip that puppy into since 'back in the day'

Sorry about that.
BTW, love the deck. Started playtesting with it and was pretty amazing.
Anyways, i suggest replacing the Dismember with Path to Exile and add a splash of white to the mana (Like Hallowed Fountain), replacing 4 Islands. I should also consider doing fetchlands (Flooded Strand), replacing the legendary lands. (Why Path to Exile? 'Cause Desecration Demon, 6/6 creatures, & Co.)

harbinger of the tides, a new merfolk from origins, could be a very nice run. It helps disrupt the opponent by bouncing a creature while keeping up your own tempo. here's a link for it: http://mythicspoiler.com/ori/cards/harbingerofthetides.html

Are there any alternatives to Cursecatcher, Mutavault and Cavern of Souls?
July 24, 2015 5:48 a.m.
No , definately not. Cursecatcher is by far the best one drop merfolk. Mutavault has incredible synergy in this deck simply for the fact that its all creature types and gains islandwalk becoming bigger and unblockable. As for Cavern of Souls , i guess you could not run it, but i really really really recommend it against control matchups.
If your looking for budget options , you can run Cosi's Trickster as your one drop . But imo its terrible in comparison to Cursecatcher lol goodluck.

Yeah you are right. I'm currently trying to match mine against slivers, though they are very hard to beat atm with my deck. I'm currently converting from a UW merfolk to this and it already got a lot faster. Guess I will have to add Cursecatcher and Mutavault - especially Mutavault might be very strong when playing against sliver...

Why no Spell Snare? Personally, I feel like it's one of the best counters in Modern. I run three mainboard and rarely sideboard them out.
September 1, 2015 12:30 p.m.
because nobody runs it? and its not good in competitive Merfolk decks? unless your trying to play a control-based Merfolk Deck id really advise against running Spell Snare... On the other hand.. Spell Pierce ftw

Coral Merfolk? :P
Ha. Ha. I saw that card and knew that I would have to "suggest" it on someone's fish deck. I play merfolk myself so I know that it isn't good. If you want to look, here is my deck: Now You Sea Me, Now You Don't!.

I really really like this deck, ive wanted to build a merfolk deck for a while, this might be the push i needed!

Thanks Bulldawg1310 , go for it! Merfolk is very well positioned atm in the modern meta. If you have any questions about the deck just message me :D

I know my deck is a bit "unconventional" for Merfolk, but it really works out great! Cutting down one AEther Vial makes me mulligan less and improves my draws, i use less creatures then other Merfolk decks is why. I replace them with support magic, removal, and counter-spells to balance out the deck. Some people may not agree, but this deck has won me many games in my Meta and at tournaments. Also thanks everyone for the up-votes, almost at 50 now! Enjoy :D
