Love! +1
How do you not have Werebear in here? Besides being a sweet bear, it ramps green mana... and the flavor text!!!!

I think that Alpine Grizzly might be a viable replacement for Golden Bear if you can't find one.

Golden Bear was easy for me to get, it was Forest Bear that I can't get a hold of. I was really happy to see Alpine Grizzly printed to fill the hole!

This deck is nothing short of a work of art. I second the need for Alpine Grizzly - as well as, for the 'tournament version', Cavern of Souls and Mutavault in the land base ;).
I've always wanted to play this deck, but don't play Legacy. So, I took matters into my own hands and made a modern-legal version. Little did I know that only two literal bears are legal in the modern format - Grizzly Bears and Runeclaw Bear . I still managed to make it work pretty well, as far as casual decks go. Also, my version has Bear's Companion , representing Timothy Treadwell from 'Grizzly Man'. Check it out here: Grizzly Man.

I made some modifications to help me try to beat a very good white flying deck with a planeswalker. This bear deck is powerful but can't block flying with a planewalker backing it sometimes. I don't claim to be a great player but just needed the additional help through doing the following:
Garruk, Apex Predator only needs +1 to kill target planeswalker. Can also buff for +5/+5 on any bear. Opponent gets an emblem. You can get this too. The card is called Garruk, Apex Predator, Emblem. This planeswalker requires 1 black mana in addition to Bear Deck's Green.
Lands. I am using different lands. Namely taplands. Jungle Hollow gives you +1 life and you can tap for black or green and be able to play Garruck.
For flying you can cast the instant Plummet . It can destroy most white flying creatures. 1 is enough to kill whatever gets big.
If you don't have all the bear creatures Words of Wilding can play a +2/+2 bear on your next turn. So if you use this you might get some "Bear Token". You can easily end up playing 4 of these in 4 turns.
There is a very good thread on the best of Forest art if you search for it and I would suggest 1 of each of them instead of using a complete Jungle Hollow land stack. Also put in a few Sapseep Forest and Llanowar Wastes (but loose 1 life so as not to be completely bad to your opponent) for variety. These can also bring out the planeswalker because they can tap for a single black.
Hope this helps.

what if you took off bear umbra and added two forests?

I don't think you honestly need more forests because the deck is maxed out at 5 mana with Coat of Arms. Look closely at coat of arms. It grants huge gains to large numbers of bears. Keep as many bears out as possible, lay that down and its game over unless they have a really good hand.

Honestly most of the cards in your sideboard should be in your maybe board except for Caller of the Claw and Words of Wilding, which I would put in as a 1 or 2-of mainboard.
Your sideboard is for cards you'll play when you need a new strategy, right? So, what are you weak to? Flying? Try Windstorm. Creatures keep getting killer? Try Fecundity etc. etc.

If anyone tries to make this deck "practical" with the addition of cards that do not directly support the vanilla bears, make bear tokens, or have a bear in the art, then they must be put to death for heresy. Hairesy? Bearecy? On a side note, I really think that bear tribal needs to get its shit together. I mean Bearscape and Werebear have negativesynergy.

Sylvan Library + Words of Wilding is a killer combo. Use the Wilding effect three times during your upkeep, turn your draw step into three bears. So three mana three 2/2 beats per turn. Worth it. Especially with Coat of Arms. I use this in my bear deck and I checked it with a judge so I'm certain it works. Just you gotta be clear that you do the wilding thing before the cards enter your hand, because let's say you try to make 2 bears & draw a card, you'll either have to pay the life of top deck it since it'll be the only card that entered your hand this turn.

What would be the interaction between petroglyphs and an animated mutavault?
February 3, 2015 10:38 a.m.
3n3rgy2 you can still tap Mutavault for mana when it is a creature and it still possesses its second ability as well, so it would not receive any benefits from Muraganda Petroglyphs. Still not a bad idea to add to a deck like this.

I am building this but I am mainboarding 2 Sylvan Library and 2 Words of Wilding as well as 2 copies of Caller of the Claw and one or two main board Giant Growth because big bears. And I dropped to 2 Coat of Arms and one Hall of Triumphfor my buffs. If I had money and hated my wallet I'd use 4Cavern of Souls and 1 Gaea's Cradle and its fairly good against some decks! Bear Cub is the MVP of this deck. GO BEAR-FORCE ONE!
