Introducing Big Red!

About

This thread is an ongoing experiment of creation and deckbuilding, evolving as sets rotate. The goal of this page is to create a Red deck in every standard environment since the creation of this deck. For the coming years, this deck will probably change a bit, as newer sets are being release, bringing new tools to the table. This deck was created in the winter of 2017, starting off as a deck that ramps via the use of Treasure tokens.

Changes can be tracked in the updates list, these will chronicle every bigger change that this deck will see. I hope you'll enjoy reading about the deck and (if you like) playing the deck.

The goal of the deck is to utilize Treasure tokens in order to get ahead of the mana-curve, power up Captain Lannery Storm or ramp into big creatures, such as the dragons in the deck. Basically, it's a Big Red strategy, meaning you'll be dropping creatures ahead of curve and casting your good spells and fatties to win.

Treasure tokens allow you to add mana of every color to your mana pool, giving you flexibility. For that reason, you can cheat a little in casting the Elder Dragons in the deck. There's also Dragon's Hoard, which is a great mana rock with the upside of drawing cards, since Dragon's are going to be played anyways.

Sideboarding is currently under construction, so here's the rundown of what I have in mind for now, as I'm processing card choices for rotation.

Fight with Fire is added as a way to deal with bigger creatures, such as Shalai, Voice of Plenty. Activating the Kicker on this card is a hefty cost, but should be doable considering the Treasure tokens and the Dragon's Hoards. Banefire can be a finisher if need be. The considerable amount of mana this deck can generate should be enough fuel to go for a lethal burn, given the situation of course. If x=>5, it can't be countered, so this is intended as a wincon. Reclamation Sage is there to deal with things Red itself can't deal with, mainly enchantments. This card is just a cool removal on a stick. Sorcerous Spyglass: A way to deal with anything that's activated, targeted PW hate. Sentinel Totem: Dealing with GY strategies.

Another way to play is to keep on being Mono-Red, changing out forests for mountains, as well as removing Elder Dragons for deck:Sarkhan's Unsealing, Lathliss, Dragon Queen and perhaps more removal or Sarkhan, Fireblood. Sarkhan, however, has recently spiked in price and is thus a bit out of budget range. This would make the deck more consistent and perhaps faster, but green offers removal for things red can't deal with.

Any tips? Any ideas? Let me know! Suggestions are always welcome, as the deck is currently still in development and can literally go anywhere since the versatile mana options of treasures. I'd love to see what kind of stuff you guys come up with. This deck currently needs feedback on the RG plan, so any thought is appreciated.

Updates Add

With the addition of Guilds of Ravnica, a couple of cards piqued my interest. First of all, Experimental Frenzy is a great card to use when you've played your hand and need some extra options from the top of the deck. It's a nice new fit, since Abrade and Glorybringer are rotating out.

Another card has also been added to the list, namely Lathliss, Dragon Queen, which seems like a great fit with all the dragons. Lightning Strike has also returned to the deck for now. Another Palladia was also added, this card is really great.

On the list of possible testing are a few GRN cards that seem to be really good:

Lava Coil looks like a great burnspell with 4 damage and an exile clause. It's a shame it's on sorcery speed, but it seems really playable.

Runaway Steam-Kin seems like a natural fit in the deck, as pretty much all of the creatures are in red, as well as the spells, which seems really good.

Risk Factor Seems like either a great card advantage or a subtle burnspell. With Jump-Start, newest mechanic of the set! I really like the idea of this card and will find room in the 75 for this card!
