I'ma Hit a Motherf*cker with Another Motherf*cker

Commander / EDH* RW (Boros) Theme/Gimmick

Hey, all. Welcome back to another EDH primer; this time featuring the shot put champion of MTG Brion Stoutarm! The idea for this deck is use creatures, and spells, to steal your opponents' permanents and toss them back at their faces. We also have a host of our own beefy boys, who can be sacrificed for value, to chuck their way as well. Along with a whole host of enchantments that double up on the damage being dealt.

What makes this deck particularly potent is the fact that Brion is the one dealing the damage. So, although the hits don't come in the form of commander damage, they get the added advantage of sustain through lifelink.

Without further ado, let's get to the primer!

As mentioned above, the main strategy of this deck is to get Brion Stoutarm onto the battlefield as soon as possible so that you can begin hurling things at your opponents' faces. While employing Brion's ability we also use the underlying 'theft' theme built into the deck to disrupt the board state of someone else while dealing a significant amount of damage in the process. This is applied in two phases: first you steal an opponent's creatures from off of their field, second since most theft style spells give haste you take those freshly nicked creatures and attack your opponent for initial damage, finally--given the fact that you'll most likely have to return those monsters at the end step--you sac them to Brion Stoutarm for additional damage, and a bit of lifegain.
Many of the synergies in the deck revolve around the interaction between theft cards like Act of Treason and, our commander, Brion Stoutarm. Using these spells to steal opponent's creatures works to disrupt their strategy while enabling our own.

We also have our own, built in, synergies that enable the deck to function. The first comes in the form of copy abilities. With cards like Mimic Vat, Feldon of the Third Path, and to a lesser extent Gift of Immortality, we can copy our own, and our opponent's in the case of Vat, creatures for some quasi recursion to attack ans sac for extra value. For example, we can sac Archon of Justice to Brion, stick him under Vat and bring him back every turn for a cheap exile, damage, and some lifegain.

My personal favorite is the combination of Serra Avatar and Brion Stoutarm. If you hit someone with this while you have enough life you can essentially one-shot your opponent.

-You enjoy gaining life for days.

-Direct damage is a way of life.

-Sacrificing for value.

-Grand Theft Auto.

-Hitting your friends with their own things.

-The extra bit a salt that'll be coming with your future matches.

-You love the combat step.

-You like having a hoard of creatures on the board.

-You think stealing is bad.

-You don't like burn style play types.

The deck has a few strengths, the first being it's commander. Brion Stoutarm is an absolute beast on the field. Since when you sac a creature to Brion he'll be bringing the beatdown which means one thing: lifegain, a whole heap of it. Not only do you get the sac value out of your creatures, but you get the added bonus of their damage being added to your own. This can be especially helpful in longer, grinder games, but can also put you out of reach pretty quickly for stompy decks (or ones that plan on going wide).

Another advantage this deck has is board disruption. You can really mess with an opponent's plan if you're stealing their stuff every turn. Not to mention most theft effects give haste to the creature. So, you can disrupt their board state, attack them with their own creature, then throw the creature at them for maximum value.

Let's face it. No one likes their things to be stolen. So, as soon as the strategy is revealed you're going to have a massive target on your back. This deck, then, has a tendency be become the victim of in-game politics. You're going to get ganged up on and knocked out early; so, come expecting that.

Another problem we'll be having is against creatureless/creature-lite decks. Although we do have our own ways do dealing damage through sacing our own creatures, sometimes that wont be quite enough. Most creatureless decks tend to be more control oriented, which is not the greatest match up for us. Although, the good thing about the match up is that we can sac in response to removal.

Pure lifegain also presents an issue for us. Because we wont be dealing too much commander damage we'll have to out pace those Oloro decks if we don't want them to get too far ahead in the life department. The good thing about this match up is that we have plenty of doubling effects that multiply our damage delt.
