A more competitive version of From the Black Market. The game plan follows the same as the budget decks discription.

How the deck works

The primary goal is to use an arsenal of removal to keep the board clear so your heavy creatures can easily take over. We try to do this with the most versatile removal black has including Victim of Night, Smother, and Go for the Throat (yes I know affinity is a thing just not at my store). Meanwhile, our other goal is to use devotion heavy creatures like Geralf's Messenger and Phyrexian Obliterator to set up a big Gray Merchant of Asphodel late game. Ideally your just killing their stuff and dropping guys down that don't die.

Mainboard

Creatures Show

Geralf's Messenger: although he comes out slow, the messenger can serve as a great blocker due to his undying ability and his ETB effect often makes attackers hesitant.... plus the 3 devotion to black is great.

Relentless Dead: early game aggressor (against control), late game recursion, and very difficult to permantly answer (you know if path didn't exist). It can consistently be used as additional Garys, Geralfs, or/and an infinite blocker with another copy in the grave.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel: although he is a 5 drop, Gary often swings the game in our direction and in some cases just wins the game with an average ETB of 6 damage do to amount of the sticky creatures we use.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet: can immediately make trades in combat look even worse, combos well with Relentless Dead, exiles stuff, and gains life.

Phyrexian Obliterator: on defense works like Ensnaring Bridge and on offense is practically unblockable. It really shines against against midrange type decks like eldrazi and big zoo.

Non creature spells Show

Bile Blight: a card that many won't expect which helps against stuff like Lingering Souls, otherwise we are just trying to get value by getting 2 for 1s.

Go for the Throat: another versatile kill spell..... should probally side out against affinity.

Smother: due to the fact that most modern creatures are 3cmc or lower, smother is very dependable.

Victim of Night: the black Terminate

Phyrexian Arena: a strong card draw engine that helps put us ahead of our opponent. Will often win games if unchecked against control.

Thoughtseize: good early to mid game hand disruption. A combo decks worse nightmare.

Inquisition of Kozilek: a card I should have bought when it was 5 bucks.

Liliana of the Veil: against creature decks it will almost always just function as an edict effect. Against control it serves as addition hand disruption and against both decks will become a win con if left unchecked. Ever heard of the lily hole? It's about as nasty as it sounds.

Lands Show

Swamps: lands that produce black mana... Duh

Tomb of Urami : late game finisher...

Bojuka Bog: will occasionally screw over graveyard dependent decks like dredge, living end, and delver decks.

Ghost Quarter: effective early and late game against decks like tron, infect, affinity, and UW control.

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth: glues the manabase together.

Sideboard

Duress: more control and burn hate

Drown in Sorrow: if played early enough it will often win games against decks like merfolk and elves.

Damnation: great for creature heavy decks like elves and affinity. Can also be brought in against jund on the draw to catch up.

Engineered Explosives: cheap 2 drop that clears tokens and cheap enchantments since black doesn't have good enchantment/artifact removal

Night of Souls' Betrayal: can shut down infect, affinity, token decks, and elves

Bloodghast: lily hates it, jund hates it, control hates it.... so you should love it.

Other strong candidates

Leyline of the Void: strong against heavy graveyard decks

Lashwrithe: turns every creature in our deck into a huge threat.

Extirpate/Surgical Extraction: very lethal against combo decks and low win con packing decks like boggles.

Ghost Quarter + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Fulminator Mage, or Rain of Tears : if tron and infect are heavy in your meta I would strongly recommend running 2-3 of these cards in the side or main board.
