StAsmodeus You can for certain playtest it. I'm uncertain as to what is coming out of the mill on Gatewatch decks. It is not a bad idea; I only don't like it because it is just one turn. That buys you time, but is it enough? What I like tending towards is a solution that is permanent. I'm not saying that this card would not win you games, it very well could, it is just not a "bullet" I lean in on though. I look for kill cards with teeth; and sometimes I even believe something will be a kill card - I end up being wrong. But the key there is to admit it, unslot it, and then move on and make more engineering picks. Give it a go, play it and see what happens and advise. Right now I've nearly fully built a Gatewatch deck and am gonna slamming this deck against it repeatedly with different players. I won't be happy until I can find a variant that fucking kills planeswalkers dead.

I played from the dark through alliances, just got back into it. Im an old guy too and I remember The Black Summer. I couldnt agree more than this card will break the meta. Ive seen it before. I say its banned by June lol

Darthack2661 Yeah, I just wanna see it happen. I wanna see what can be done with it, and more importantly I want another damn Black Summer. I have literally created three decks using it so far. Tokens with black/green, and tokens with black/white. This one I slapped together after some thought at 3AM on a Monday night. It is slower, but still can work.

Let me just tell you that I made a HUGE mistake game 1 in the last round. I should have been 4-0 and 1st place, but at 45 years old, I need BETTER GLASSES! I'll explain tomorrow...

OK, first of all, here's the list:

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/blackhole-sun-2/#c3305348

First "testdrive": 3-1 (2nd place out of 17 players)

2-1 vs Izzet Tempo
2-0 vs Jund Hapatra/Scorpion God -1/-1 Madness
2-0 vs Selesnya Tokens
1-2 vs Bant Superfriends

As for my mistake, I thought that Ajani Unyielding was at 8 loyalty when he was actually at 10, so I didn't Vraska Contempt it, thinking I could do it on the next turn. In my opponent's next turn, he puts Teferi, Hero of Dominaria on table, ultimates his Ajani putting 5 more loyalty on Teferi and emblems Teferi.

On his next turn, he plays Pull from Tomorrow exiling my 11 lands...

It was a mistake, but my opponent's dices were black over green. I should have taken my time while looking at them...

4x Treasure Map and 4x Mastermind's Acquisition really helped the deck feel smooth all night long!

I playtested a lot against mono green and with their 4x Blossoming Defenses (maindeck) and 4x Heroic Intervention (sideboard), it really felt like the 3rd Settle the Reckage was needed.

Firelord excellent performance either way; you did very, very, well. Good work! I love the revisions, and think they are nice. The core idea is still right on time, and the adjustments are what I was looking at. I wanted to know what would unlock it and set the idea up for success. The four Treasure Map  Flip I am sure gave a good solid amount of card draw. I might be overreaching a bit with my artifact layout. Cast Out is one I agonized over for a long while; and I'm glad it found a way in this version. As predicted, control decks are the main tough match up, but you can win against them with the naming of cards using Gideon's Intervention and Lost Legacy. I like it! Excellent!

Best sequencing of the night happened in game 3 of the first round.

Turn 2: cast Treasure Map
Turn 3: scry with Treasure Map
Turn 4: scry with Treasure Map (getting a Gideon's Intervention on top)
Turn 5: scry with Treasure Map and make 3 treasures, then cast Gideon's Intervention (my opponent then sulks while saying he can't counter it looking at my 3 treasures... so I named "SYNCOPATE")
Turn 6: cast Lich's Mastery
Turn 7: cast Approach of the Second Sun (putting it under the 6 first cards of my library) and then gain 7 life (redrawing it in the same turn).
Turn 8: cast Approach of the Second Sun for the 2nd time and win!

It turned out my opponent had the Syncopate in hand but because of the 3 treasures, I had enough to pay for it when I did cast my Gideon's Intervention.

Firelord Yep, adding those main deck, skipping out on the amulets. Nice job!

As for the 2x Cast Out in the main, they also helped to smooth things at some point because I could cycle them.

The card that was the most disappointing all night was actually Cast Down because I ran into decks that mostly had legendary creatures!

Another good interaction was Authority of the Consuls with Seal Away.

Oh and another funny fact is that I won my game 2 vs the Jund deck with Approach of the Second Sun after he named it using Lost Legacy in turn 3 of that game. How? Turn 4, I tutored Lost Legacy from sideboard. Turn 5, I played it naming... Lost Legacy (cause I didn't want him to play another one... turns out he had 2 more, so it was a good call)! Turn 6, I tutored the Approach of the Second Sun from the sideboard, which I played turn 7 and a couple of turns later!

Firelord Yeah, Cast Down was something that could be replaced with using Moment of Craving. You gain 2 life, and if Lich's Mastery is out you can draw two cards. I'm probably going to swap those up right now after you make mention of this. I was concerned Cast Down would be too restricted in our current environment. You cannot cast down the latest threats; some yes. But all? No. I still question the choice. Big time. Maybe 2 Moment of Craving and 1 Cast Down? Unsure still. It has to be a mix relating to your meta in the venue I am certain almost. Some places are complaining of Mono Red still showing up, so Cast Down is great, but when you see spaces where Legendary creature decks are rampant, it loses big value.

TOUGH CALLS ARGH.

The 25th land (Field of Ruin) was very important too! I did use it once against Azcanta, but even if I hadn't, 24 lands felt one too short in playtesting.

My 2nd opponent (who got stomped by the deck by the way) liked it so much that he wants to borrow it for next week's FNM! LOL

Oh and in case you are wondering about the 4x Knight of Malice in the sideboard (who were originally 4x Knight of Grace), it turns out that with either one of these:

  • 3x Authority of the Consuls
  • 2x Cast Out
  • 2x Seal Away
  • 2x Gideon's Intervention

a 3/2 first strike creature is a very good blocker vs any aggro deck... and is even better vs a Bant Superfriends deck. Why?

Well that means your opponent can't target it using:

  • Ajani Unyielding
  • Dovin Baan
  • Gideon of the Trials
  • Teferi, Hero of Dominaria
  • Cast Out
  • Seal Away
  • Ixalan's Binding

Kingleil, you should really add that 9th Plains and cut that 3rd Cast Down. Trust me on this one!

Treasure Map will prevent you from flooding... but hitting your land drop every turn is soooooo important with this deck.
