Let me talk about this deck a bit. I started working on this deck back in July/August. Originally it started out as a Black and Red Thermo deck with almost no other creatures besides Goblin Dark-Dwellers, bedlam reveler, and Stromkirk occultist. It was an ok deck with some decent power to it but nothing consistent enough to be competitive. As i played with the deck with a good friend we talked about trying to improve the deck. We stretched it into a more control type deck with harder burn and creature destruction. Cards like Chandra, Flamecaller and hard hand disruption eventually made it's way in.
Then Kaladesh spoilers dropped and the deck took on an entire new form. I went hard hand burn and destruction with minor disruption leaving that more to the sideboard. I added cards like the Red and Black Gearhulks along with the new Chandra (I tested Ob Nix briefly but felt he didn't fit). By October the changes were minuscule at best. Taking out a card here and there and switching some to better meet the meta.
Eventually it came down to this refined build. R/B Spells. I took this to game day and went 5-1 there. Here were the results.
Match 1 - U/R Infinite Thopters (2-1)
This one was weird. I knew I could beat it in it's normal state. However the guy playing it turned it into a strict control on game 2 which REALLY threw me off. However Third game was a breeze since I could adjust my play style to better combat how his deck worked in control.
Match 2 - Mono White Vehicles (2-1)
This was a relatively easy game. The second I only lost because of being REALLY mana screwed.
Match 3 - R/W Vehicles (2-1)
This game was a against the Vehicles deck which won the GP at the beginning of October. The guy built it card for card the same as the winner of that GP. First game went well and pretty much nailed him down from the get go. Second game he wiped me hard partially due to bad draws on my part. Third i wiped the floor with him.
Match 4 - Naya Superfriends (0-2)
My only loss during the tournament. Man this was rough. The deck was beyond janky, no one card more important than the rest. The first game I couldn't nail down what he was trying to accomplish. The second game I sided in more hand disruption but made a very stupid misplay that cost me the game. No one to blame but myself.
Match 5 - R/W Vehicles (2-1)
Against literally the same deck, different player. First game I lost because of being out aggro'd. Second and third i took with the third being really close because of mana screw.
Match 6 - Abzan Control (3-0)
Our shop has our last game be a best of five . i knew the guy playing (he's a really good friend) and we knew each other's decks really well. I swept him hard not because his deck bad (It's actually quite strong) but rather I got some amazing draws and my sideboard was almost made to combat control decks which are my deck's biggest weakness.
All in all it was an incredibly solid test run of the deck I plan on taking to the Baltimore Open at the beginning of November. Hope you all enjoy it.
