pardon the scuffed description, i'll fix it i swear

Are you looking for an offbeat, unique, and deceptively powerful commander? Do you want to turn seemingly dead board states into explosive, game-winning turns? If so, Bladewing may be for you.

Built normally, Bladewing is a rather weak commander when it comes to value. 7 mana for a 4/4 that reanimates a dragon once is almost agonizingly underwhelming, in an environment where other commanders can easily warp the whole game around them. When built to combo, though, the game is over the moment Bladewing comes down.

This is a fairly budget-friendly casual Bladewing the Risen combo deck. It's still very much a work in progress - if you see a way I can make this deck better at achieving its goal of comboing off to win (and surviving until it can combo), feedback is appreciated!

Please note that any instance of Goblin Bombardment on the key combos list can effectively be replaced by any other sac outlet in the list.

Cards in this deck can be divided into 4 categories.

1: Things to make you cast combos faster

2: Things to let you survive until you can cast a combo

3: Things to find parts of a combo

4: Combo pieces

5: Combo support

In short, the gameplan is to ramp to 7, get a sac outlet and payoff on the board, get Hellkite Courser in hand or graveyard using one of numerous tutors, and loop Bladewing ad infinitum to win.

Bladewing the Risen + Goblin Bombardment + Hellkite Courser

You can begin this combo with Courser either in yard or in hand.

  1. Cast Hellkite Courser.

  2. Sacrifice Hellkite Courser before its ETB trigger resolves.

  3. When Bladewing enters the battlefield, target Hellkite Courser with its ETB trigger.

  4. Sacrifice Bladewing before its ETB trigger resolves.

  5. Repeat steps 2 to 4.

If Courser is in the yard instead, cast Bladewing targeting Courser and sacrifice Bladewing before its ETB trigger resolves.

Bladewing the Risen + Goblin Bombardment + Molten Echoes

Begin with Molten Echoes on the battlefield and Bladewing in the command zone with enough mana to cast him. Throughout this combo, we will not be returning Bladewing to the command zone when he dies.

  1. Cast Bladewing.

  2. Sacrifice Bladewing before Molten Echoes' effect resolves.

  3. With the new Bladewing token's ETB effect, target Bladewing.

  4. Sacrifice the new Bladewing token before the original Bladewing returns to play.

  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4.

A common theme in our combos in this deck is that it is good to have either a sac outlet that provides adequate payoff (e.g. Altar of Dementia milling all opponents) or a separate form of payoff (e.g. Warstorm Surge killing all opponents). Let's look at these cards now.

One thing we need to do in order to have any effect is make otherwise-benign actions (e.g. our commander dying a metric butt-ton of times) into something that actually wins the game. Fortunately, this isn't so hard to do. First, let's look at the key pieces:

Goblin Bombardment - an incredibly understated card. In the context of this deck, this absolutely dunks on an outlet like Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar, while also being a far less likely target for removal. Using either of our core recursion combos with this as our sac outlet will win the game by pinging every opponent to death.

Altar of Dementia - Generally, all this is going to do is exactly what Goblin Bombardment does - that is, win the game. It does so by decking out your opponents, so be conscious of any Laboratory Maniac or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries on the board before using this on them.

Carrion Feeder - the final one of our "compact" wincons, this little guy can be a big surprise when someone hasn't kept a blocker up for your 1/1 and otherwise barren board and gets run over by one of the only creatures without evasion that this deck runs.

Lathliss, Dragon Queen - Lathliss can turn otherwise impotent sac outlets like Ashnod's Altar into lean, mean dragon-making machines. If you've managed to toss Anger into the graveyard or get out an early Dragon Tempest, or you've set up your board with a Scourge of Valkas, you'll win on the spot.

Scourge of Valkas - Speaking of this guy, he's a fantastic way to enable sac outlets to do some serious damage.

Panharmonicon - Reanimate every dragon in your graveyard. On repeat. Need I say more?

Taborax, Hope's Demise - Ever wanted to swing with a 40/40 flying lifelinker? evra deck tech soon lol

1. clear out some of the more pointless inclusions

  1. add more boardwipes

  2. consider adding more ways to dig through library, e.g. Ad Nauseam

  3. fix this jank description
