A "Doctor Who" Universe Beyond Precon, this deck is all about getting massive value from casting Historic spells and creating a mass of artifact tokens.

This deck also brings out the full diversity of the new "Doctor's Companion" mechanic. A "Partner" variant, this keyword allows a creature to act as a second commander if the other commander has the type line "Legendary Creature - Time Lord Doctor". Due to the possible combinations of Doctors and Doctor's Companions in this deck, this breakdown will only discuss the most likely played commanders.

The deck's face commanders, The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, care about the casting of Historic spells, which fill this deck. With the Fourth Doctor allowing you to cast a historic spell from the top of your library once each turn and Sarah Jane Smith rewarding you with a Clue when you do so, you'll have your pick of historic spells to play no matter the situation.

By casting these historic spells and creating these tokens, you can enhance some of the Doctor's other companions, like Jamie McCrimmon who loves combat or Ace, Fearless Rebel who loves a good fight or even Nyssa of Traken who loves attacking...

Maybe the Council of Gallifrey was right to be wary of the Doctor...

The first back-up commanders are The First Doctor and Susan Foreman. For those players who love Planeschase, this pairing will allow you to dictate the planes you visit. When you planeswalk, Sarah will allow you the choice of which of two planes you wish to walk to thus ensuring you can always utilise the plane to your own ends.

The First Doctor is a little bit more lowkey. Although he wants you to cascade, he always get the TARDIS to your hand then the field. When this "not-secret" secret commander attacks whilst you control a Time Lord, it grants your next spell cascade, thus empowering our actual commander, and allows us to planeswalk if we choose. This is hugely beneficial, as it allows you to escape unhelpful planes that are helping your opponents. Provided, of course, it doesn't break.

The next back-up commander for the deck is Alistair, the Brigadier. The only non-Doctor/Companion commander for this deck, Alistair creates loyal 1/1 Solider tokens whenever you cast a historic spell. Then, when Alistair decides to attack himself, you can pay to give all your creatures +X/+X, where X equals the number of historic permeants you have. Considering almost every nonland permanent is your deck is historic, this should be HUGE!!

You'll need to both protect you board, with cards like Heroic Intervention and Adric, Mathematical Genius, and ensure you can attack safely, with cards like Tegan Jovanka or Sonic Screwdriver, to ensure Alistair gets you the win.

Of course, the bestest boy does both.

As a fresh universe for Universe Beyond, it shouldn't surprise anyone that there a lot of the new cards, all of which designed to fit the Doctor Who universe. Although it's already been mentioned, the sheer number of potential combinations of Doctor/Companions in this deck make my head spin and I'm sure the Doctor Who fans will love mixing and matching their favourites. That said, neither Mel Bush nor Grace Holloway appear in card form, so apologies if they were your favourite companion.

But the upside of all the new Doctors is the creation of a new alternative win-con card: Gallifrey Stands. By controlling thirteen Doctors during your upkeep, you win the game. Unfortunately, this precon only contains eight, with the others being spread out amongst the other two Doctor decks; Timey-Wimey and Paradox Power. A small flavour fail but not really unexpected, considering it is a precon.

There is a lot of other new hotness through. For example, Reverse the Polarity is an incredibly flexible card for blue players. When your choices are between an anti-storm counterspell, a power/toughness swapper and ensuring ALL your creatures are unblockable, you'll never feel bad holding mana for this spell.

But perhaps you're more of a Timmy/Tammy and just want to watch the world burn? If that's more your speed, then forcing your opponents to play The War Games is more your speed. The first mono-white goad outside of the Impetus cycle, this creates goaded Warrior tokens for each player, before pumping them up over the next two turns. Assuming any of them are still alive by the time this Saga hits its final chapter, you may sacrifice a nontoken creature to remove all Warriors from the board, not just the tokens you made (that's a warning to you, Hazezon Tamar).

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the elephant in the room, or rather the dinosaur. Displaced Dinosaurs turns all of your historic permanents into 7/7 Dinosaur creatures. As previously mentioned, almost all of your permanents are historic, so that's a lot of dinosaurs. However, I think this was really made for the Johnny/Jennie who want to the taste of being a Timmy/Tammy. Depending on how fast you can generate historic tokens, you might be able to create a Dinosaur army out of nowhere. Unfortunately, not only do the Dinosaurs not get trample or haste, Displaced Dinosaurs also cost to cast! I hope your token machine is mana efficient.

This precon has few cards that rate as worthy reprints, but most of those are the lands. Between the slow lands combination of Deserted Beach and Dreamroot Cascade, plus the Horizon Canopy, they are some of the best dual lands available outside of the OG duals and the Shocks.

Another quality reprint is Heroic Intervention which remains at a high price, despite only just being reprint in both Commander Masters and the "Food and Fellowship" Precon only a few months ago. Not really a surprise as it remains one of, if not the, best protection spells around.

Overall, this deck is aimed at players who want flexibility with their playstyle, as this deck can lean in several different directions depending on which combination of Doctors and Companions you decide you want headlining your deck.
