Magic Origins provided much needed juice to black devotion.
Not only are we on curve now, we're actually just as competitive as the Ravnican days!
Every single creature in this deck either reanimates itself, is a devotion win-con, or is Liliana, Heretical Healer
.
I'll break down each card by CMC:
ONEThoughtseize - Very versatile and disrupting discard spell. Essential.
Bloodsoaked Champion - Straight off, easy cast creature that is hard to get rid of + quick devotion.
TWO
Despoiler of Souls
- Similar to the
Mardu Scout
of red, this guy is just as weak, but with an upside - also very hard to get rid of.
Bile Blight - If we're going to kill, we want to kill fast, and this spell has unbound utility to kill tokens that block our path. Also it hits very close to all of the early game plays.
Sign in Blood -
Read the Bones
may be much more helpful, but we need fast draw, and this fits the bill.
THREEHero's Downfall - The essential kill spell of standard.
Mogis's Marauder
- A cheap way to push through damage when their creatures are actually rather big.
Liliana, Heretical Healer
- A 2/3 body with lifelink is decent, but her flip is what really matters. Using her +2 will never hurt you but oh boy, will it hurt the opponent. Plus her graveyard recursion means your opponents will always hate you for bringing back a
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
without any Whip of Erebos's in play.
FOURWhip of Erebos - Good devotion, great lifelink, and also recurs
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
and
Mogis's Marauder
for insta-kills.
Erebos's Titan - The new mono-black beater that beats
Siege Rhino
and can never die. In the right deck, he uses his devotion for very powerful game plays.
FIVE
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
- The big man himself, and the ultimate win-con for mono-black devotion.
So there you have it! Let me know in the comments what you think, and how I could tweak it to make it even more powerful. This may be a homebrew but test it out if you have the cards, it's extremely consistent and actually quite competitive.
