Maybeboard

I was quickly drawn to Atraxa, Praetors' Voice for her proliferate effect. There are countless synergistic opportunities with her, but I opted for infect, since its a mechanic I like and wanted a chance to see more of the interesting creatures that don't see play in other formats.

There are a lot of creatures in this deck, because I don't want to end up with a weak board state in which I can proliferate, but have nothing to increase. Unlike other infect strategies which involve getting one creature through and pumping it up, I'd rather swing for a bit of damage once and let Atraxa and the rest of the proliferation engine work its magic. Once that initial damage is in they can swing, but primarily act as a defensive barrier. Well, thats a lot of creatures. There are a few enchantments that also fit this theme:
Instead of trying to swing for poison counters each turn, get a few on and proliferate the hell out of them.
  • Contagion Clasp another way to make a creature a proliferate target, with an activated ability to proliferate
  • Contagion Engine is a much more powerful card, worth 3x the casting cost. It can make all creatures of a target player viable candidates, and its activated ability proliferates twice
  • Darksteel Reactor doesn't proliferate, but sure benefits from it
  • Fuel for the Cause counter spell and proliferate, worth the double blue cost
  • Grim Affliction can help deal with a pesky creature, making it a viable target for proliferation
  • Inexorable Tide proliferates whenever any spell is cast, which adds up
  • Spread the Sickness is a more permanent solution to a pesky creature, the proliferate is icing on top
  • Steady Progress lets us draw a card and proliferate. A card draw spell made for us
  • Tezzeret's Gambit another card draw and proliferate, but this time for two and can be paid with life
  • Thrummingbird proliferates upon combat damage
  • Core Prowler When it dies, enjoy the free proliferate
  • Viral Drake is a double hitter; both dealing infect and has an activated ability to proliferate
Proliferation isn't the only fun we can have with -1 counters
This deck becomes a lot more reliable when you can find a few cards you need. I debated whether I wanted to put more tutors and fewer creatures, but the price of some cards is keeping me from doing so.
