UPDATE:

I deleted the old FNM update, as the deck has changed so much in the last week that the update longer applies. Hopefully I'll be able to take this to this FNM, if I do I will post the results.

Also, I have adjusted the sideboard by removing Quag Sickness and put in Angelic Edict instead, as it will help out against decks that run Erebos, God of the Dead .

Did you drop Quag Sickness because your mana base is pretty much split down the middle?

There's also Death's Approach just so you are aware.

@SS1985: Yes, that was part of it. Another reason is that Pacifism style-effects stick around on the board to fuel Ethereal Armor . However, if you were running the 3/4 black 1/4 white version that was here last week, then Quag Sickness becomes more appealing. I'm still tinkering with this deck, it is by no means complete.

I'm considering dropping One Thousand Lashes for Arrest , as it is 1 mana cheaper. Also probably need to up the count of Underworld Connections , as it is hard to keep up if I don't draw at least one. Maybe -2 Blind Obedience and +2 Underworld Connections ? I'll think about it. Would love some thoughts on this.

Thanks for commenting!

Araganor Well I was thinking more so as far as a method to deal with gods. Obviously neither enchantment would be able to do anything until the god was a creature anyway but I figured Quag Sickness was easier to cast but looking at your lands afterwards I could sort of understand One Thousand Lashes . I'm not running this deck but the same colors (just much less white lol). Feel free to check it out I could use some advice as well Its Dark and Hell is Hot .

As far as the Underworld Connections and Blind Obedience go I'd say it would be okay to move obedience to the sideboard for aggro matchups. I'm not sure if adding more connections is the right move or not because if you have more than one out a Detention Sphere could hurt. Maybe you could try to find some spells that let you scry? Not really sure myself tough call.

Just gonna add my two cents here. If they have the devotion for the god, it might simply be easier to hit the creatures giving the god devotion with removal rather than trying to kill the god. If they don't have the devotion, then you can't actually use Quag Sickness on it since it isn't a creature. Just keep that in mind.

I have found that Angelic Edict is a better solution to gods, as it is more flexible than Quag Sickness , and can hit em even when they aren't creatures. Also good against control decks running Detention Sphere . Its pretty expensive and slow though, so I keep it in the sideboard.

I'm playing around with the deck quite a bit here, but I've made a few changes.

I removed One Thousand Lashes and put in its place Arrest , mainly because it didn't seem that the 1 damage per turn ping was worth the extra mana. I've also upped the number of Underworld Connections to 3. I took out Sin Collector , and put back in 3x Baleful Eidolon instead. Without deathtouch, stalling the board is more difficult, plus it ups the number of relevant enchants in here as well. Also, Blind Obedience has been moved to the sideboard, in place of Contaminated Ground .

As I have said before, I'm probably going to continue to tinker with this for a while. I'm still open for suggestions!

This is literally the cheapest deck in standard that looks "viable" to me right now (excluding shocklands), +1 just for that alone. I would still try to get your hands on Godless Shrine or Temple of Silence if you can btw.

Sphere of Safety could be useful i suppose, as well as Martial Law (sideboard). The second of which is especially cruel for decks that rely on 1-2 big baddies (like Mistcutter Hydra or other ramp creatures.

also, when the rest of the block comes out, graveyards could indeed be a threat again. I would aquire 2-3x Rest in Peace in case you ever need them.

@Grimgrinner Thanks so much! It really means a lot to have your support. I am of the opinion that players should not have to spend a lot of money to have a good time playing magic at an FNM.

I have considered Sphere of Safety before, but overall I think that I want to try keep the enchantments fairly cheap so that Blightcaster can be fully utilized. I will definitely keep it in mind however. It would be pretty good sideboard against weenie/token decks.

Martial Law is a very neat idea, I will have to test that! My only worry is that since it procs on my upkeep, I will basically be doing almost nothing the turn I play it. However, it's a very a flexible card, like an Arrest that you can move to the biggest threat each turn, but sticks around even if their board is empty. Thanks for the suggestion!

I will see how much Rest in Peace is going for now, and maybe grab a few at my local store.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Dude check out tcgplayer.com, they have like hundreds of stores put their stuff up and you can get cards for a couple dollars less than your local shop will sell em for. Of course, if you have store credit, go use that.

Araganor says... #14

@kyuuri117: Yeah, I'm just impatient :P I actually have some cards coming in later this week to finish up this deck, as my store is pretty much cleaned out of Gatecrash. They should come in before Friday, so I will hopefully be piloting this on this week's FNM.

November 5, 2013 8:50 p.m.

kyuuri117 says... #15

Ah alright. Yea, it's kind of annoying how the shops only really stock the rares, mythics and foils, and only four of them apiece at that. Still, it is kind of nice if you draw something decent in draft and can just sell it to them after.

To anyone out there playing magic, I find the best way to get new cards is trading. Most players are pretty honest, and are OK with you looking up prices first to make sure you aren't getting ripped off. In fact, if they have a problem with you looking up the price, that's pretty much a red flag that they ARE trying to rip you off. Honestly, if you have scry lands or shock lands, I would trade those first. The kind of 3 color decks that use them most are hella expensive anyway. I traded a Temple of Silence for 2 of my Underworld Connections and a Whip of Erebos , which was fine with me since I got cards I really needed, and he got a scry land to complete his collection. Shock lands and scry lands are nice, but I think that they really aren't worth shelling out 40 bucks for a playset. It kind of locks you down to that color combo, because you will be hesitant to try anything new since you payed all that money to run those two specific colors.

I'll get off my soapbox now :)

I knew someone would find a way to break Blightcaster eventually. You seem to have done so quite efficiently. I like your use of Alms Beast as well.

When you get a shot do you think you could check out my deck Blitzkrieg Bop?

Nice deck man, and +1.

November 5, 2013 11:43 p.m.

Araganor says... #18

@Krakshot: Now that Theros has come around, abusing Blightcaster has become a lot easier to do with the advent of enchantment creatures.

I would be happy to check out your deck, but I'm afraid it will have to wait until tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback!

November 5, 2013 11:50 p.m.

Grimgrinner says... #19

Lol as Krakshot said, I forgot to mention that yes, you made quite good use Alms Beast . Honestly I've never seen it played outside of draft/sealed, but you pull it off. In fact, It kinda works better than Desecration Demon because it always gets to attack.

+1 upvote for the the bufget deck

@Araganor Nice deck! I like how it works and how it can gives a hard time to your opponents. Ever tought of using glare of heresy instead of using angelic edict. They both have the same speed but one does a lot more right now in the metagame mostly because of white aggros, assemble the legion and elspeth, sun's champion. While you wait to cast your edict your opponent will have plenty of time to kill you.

November 7, 2013 9:42 a.m.

Araganor says... #21

@Darkmiz Actually, Glare of Heresy was in maybeboard for quite a while. The thing is, I need some sort of answer to Erebos, God of the Dead , or my chances of winning against it are slim. I do think Glare of Heresy is a good idea, however. It seems like the toughest matchup for this deck is definitely powerful control decks, like Esper Control. They run few creatures, and having a way to get of their D-Sheres would definitely be handy. Perhaps I could drop Blind Obedience for some Glares in the SB. Another thing I'm on the fence about is hand disruption, namely Duress and Sin Collector , because it can be a big help against control heavy decks. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback!

@Aragnor I must admit that I didn't think about those two cards that are used alot right now. How about 2 or 3 Merciless Eviction instead? It' a bit heavier on the cmc than Angelic Edict but it does a lot more and still goes in the budget category.

On the other hand you could still go +2 Glare of Heresy for -1Ethereal Armor and -1 Pithing Needle .

Also You could go -1 Vizkopa Guildmage and +1 Orzhov Charm in the main and would give you a bit more answers. Plus it would open up a slot for you Sin Collector .

November 7, 2013 11:26 a.m.

Araganor says... #23

@Darkmiz Merciless Eviction is not a bad idea, certainly much more flexible. I could imagine playing this to clean out some planeswalkers or permanently getting rid of all Detention Sphere s. Definitely powerful sideboard, I'll think about it.

@(Aragnor)[http://tappedout.net/users/Araganor/] I was thnking about it and why not use Tormented Hero and Agent of the Fates instead of your Vizkopa Guildmage and Baleful Eidolon ?

Pacifism is a great but im not quit sure about Arrest due to its high cost. I'd rather play Dark Favor over Arrest to keep the pressure on the opponent. Plus if you tag Dark Favor on Hopeful Eidolon you'll still get 3 more life than the turn it came in and it's a turn 2 with that.

3 Banisher Priest in the Sideboard for against the mono black decks running Erebos, God of the Dead , Nightveil Specter , Pack Rat and Desecration Demon . Gift of Immortality might be good too.
