if you're not on too much of a budget, Erebos, God of the Dead would probably help. his effect negates life gain for the opponent, which reinforces Alms Beast . He also has a pumpable draw effect, so he's useful even if you don't devotion ramp. He's also an enchantment creature, so it adds to the effects of Blightcaster

I love Orzhov decks, it is by far my favorite guild, turn a 1 drop into a 2 drop and you get 1 life AND drain them for 1 using extortion, great guild, love the deck also, it is very good, usually i have trouble making control decks without blue. Great job!

Trying a new, more aggressive angle that will hopefully compete a bit better against control. Got a ton of work to do right now though, talk more about it later.

Why did you choose to remove a blightcaster and the baleful eidolons? Erebos emmissary doesn't really seem to have a spot in here either, as your win con is from creatures is it not?

@tothemax99 This build is temporary, I'm playing around with it. The thing is, this deck is pretty weak against creatureless decks. I'm trying to find a way to add more pressure against opponents who play control. I will probably end up not keeping this change though.

As far as facing control goes, I've found that Planeswalker removal like Hero's Downfall, and Pithing Needle can help quite a bit against American, Esper and Azorius control. Have five or six mana? Drop a 3 drop creature, hope it gets countered , and the play the removal. Stuff like that. Also, having a deck full of 1-3 drops so you can have multiple threats hit the board at once really helps. Against Grixis control...I don't know how to deal with that. I assume you just need an entire deck full of small 1-3 drops, with maybe a splash of red for something like Hammer of Purphuros to give everything haste.

Honestly, I'd toss in four Hero's downfall to the sideboard , and have the remaining Seven or eight cards be aggro creatures.

If it's going to be for control decks, then I would get rid of nighthowler, as they have no creatures to buff it up with. If you went against an aggro deck however this card would be awesome if you got rid of their creatures.

Yeah, I would love to have some Hero's Downfall , and a playset of Desecration Demon , but I don't want to bring the price of the deck up too much. Guess I might have to suck it up though.

I would not suggest adding desecration demon to the sideboard. Put him in for alms beast in the main deck, sure. As far as "aggro" creatures go to play against the control decks, I meant things like soldier of the pantheon, and other cheep 1-3 drops that go well in aggro decks. You probably understood that but I just wanted to clarify anyway.

I've been thinking, maybe some double strike creatures in the sideboard might be what this deck needs. A Fabled Hero or Fencing Ace could get out of hand quick given all the powerups I could give them. Maybe that might help put some pressure on control decks. For example, side out Pacifism and Blightcaster against control, put in Fencing Ace /Fabled Hero and more Gift of Orzhova , or even Boon of Erebos . I'll think about it.

@kyuuri117 Oh, I know Dese Demon doesn't need to be in this deck, I was just kinda wishing I had some, lol.

For control maybe some Silence which can just be devesating on turn 4 when they would supreme verdict and you silence them. Also Duress for the spell removal which could just flat out remove it early on =).

im not sure if anyone has said this yet but Quag Sickness would be perfect to replace Doom Blade With! it kills off gods in thier creature state and also helps your blightcaster out.

Araganor says... #19

@VampireArmy: Quite right! The main reason I run Doom Blade instead is because it is instant, but if you like you can run Quag Sickness instead. Also, the mana split is pretty even, so it would only be about half as effective.

Hello there, like the deck +1 from me, What do you think of Devour Flesh insead of doom blade, and you could side in Murder Investigation or Dying Wish against control. just a thought and have no idea how it would play, but a dying wish or a murder investigation on your Alms Beast would result in tokens or a drain life - even better, cast devour flesh on yourself with the alms beast + dying wish, you gain 12 they take 6 and god help them if you have Vizkopa Guildmage active, you gain 12 and they take 18!!! just wondering what you think of that combo?

P.S. both cards are still enchantments an will still be gasoline for Blightcaster

Another possibility, remove Gift of Orzhova for Ordeal of Heliod -

Turn 1 - Hopeful Eidolon Turn 2 - Ordeal of Heliod Turn 3 - Vizkopa Guildmage (throw on a Ethereal Armor if you have it)Turn 4 - activate vizkopa, attack for your third time with eidolon, ordeal pops gaining you 10 and they loose 10 also attack with vizkopa if they cant defend it and that would be game putting them at exactly 0 and you at 38 life (without the Ethereal armor on even more devastation if it was there)

tothemax99 says... #24

mikehickey84, It's all down to how you want to do it, gift gives flying which there aren't too many flyers in standard right now. Heliod does have a good synergy as well, but what if eidolon is burned? It's easier to get rid of with ordeal on than eth armor on.

When it comes down to it, it's all opinion. I do like ordeal over gift though.

tothemax99, I was just spit balling ideas. the Gift of Orzhova does have good synergy with the Vizkopa Guildmage as well. i have tryed a few combos out with this color combination, i don't know why but i always start with both the gift and the eidolon and then convince myself to choose one or the other. In this particular deck i would choose the eidolon and scrap the orzhova.

Personally if i did choose the orzhova and decided to scrap the eidolon, i don't think Favored Hoplite would be out of place here or even the Soldier of the Pantheon
