Maybeboard

My take on a casualish Brago. I say casual because I don't include any stax effects or infinite combos, favoring enter the battlefield value. That being said, this deck chugs along nicely and produces a lot value if it is not stopped. The gameplan is to play a couple of mana rocks and cards with nice ETB effects for the first two or three turns and then get in Brago on turn 4 or 5 to swing and start the value train. Each time I attack with Brago I should be drawing a bunch of cards, getting a bunch of mana, and creating some tokens. I use the mana to drop more things that give me more cards and more tokens and more mana! This deck wins through tokens attacking. You'll notice this deck only has 34 lands, which seems low, but it works for some reason.

Card Breakdown

Artifact Ramp

Basalt Monolith, Mana Vault - No downside with Brago out

Darksteel Ingot - Indestructible mana rock/fixing

Gilded Lotus, Thran Dynamo - Big mana rocks. Can each be 6 mana a turn with Brago!

Sol Ring - Duh... Doubly effective in Brago too, let's just ban this card.

Thought Vessel - We're going to be drawing some cards.

ETB ramp

Great Whale - Potentially 9 free mana a turn with the right lands out. Worst case scenario it's a free 5/5

Peregrine Drake - Potentially 7 free mana a turn with the right lands out. Worst case scenario it's a free 2/3 flier

Treachery - Take the biggest threat and get up to 7 Free mana a turn. This card is absurd in Brago.

Pilgrim's Eye - Just lets us hit our land drops. Nothing special, would considering swapping for something better

Solemn Simulacrum - Extra land every turn. I hope he never dies, but if he does we draw a card.

Draw!

Ephara, God of the Polis - Usually gives you an extra card each turn. We can flicker a creature on someone elses turn to get an extra activation off her if we're desperate for cards. I'm not super impressed with her so far

Mulldrifter, Flight of Fancy - Two free cards on each of my turns

Sea Gate Oracle - Draw the better of two cards! Great value! Often drops before Brago which is awesome!

Sphinx of Uthuun - Awesome with Brago! Two or three free cards a turn, or five if you have an ally! Which you usually won't...

Sphinx's Revelation - Use all that untapped mana to get lots of card and health! Not super impressed with this card most of the time. It's good but does not really synergize with Brago.

Trial of Knowledge - Draw three cards a turn discard 1 each turn.

Mystic Remora - Brago negates most of the downside of this card, making it very good

Rhystic Study - Does not synergize with Brago but still great card draw.

Spreading Seas - Only 2 mana to draw a card every turn Brago swings. Great to get out on turn one or two before Brago drops. Turns the most threatening land in the game into an island.

Unblockable/Draw

Unquestioned Authority, Pentarch Ward, Traveler's Cloak - All these cards draw us a card whenever Brago attacks and make Brago more or less unblockable. Just be careful, if you blink these auras you cannot attach them to something else that was blinked by Brago.

Steel of the Godhead - Makes Brago bigger and unblockable

Removal

Angel of Serenity - Remove the three biggest threats. Can blink to remove three new threats and send the old ones back to owners hand

Duplicant, Phyrexian Ingester - Exile a nontoken creature every turn.

Return to Dust - Sometimes you just need an artifact or enchantment to go away forever. Stupid aura shards.

Act of Authority - See above, but synergizes with Brago.

Return to Dust - One mana exile spells are good

Oblivion Ring, Detention Sphere - Remove the biggest threat. If an even bigger threat appears bounce it and take the new baddie.

Reflector Mage - See ya later alligator. In a while crocodile.

Reality Acid - Makes my opponents sacrifice a creature each turn and gets through hexproof!

Tokens/Manifests

Cloudform, Lightform - Get a new manifest each turn for free. The cool thing about manifests is that if they get a good permanent Brago can blink them and they come back face up. Otherwise they just act as tokens.

Mastery of the Unseen - I'm testing this card out. Seems like a good mana sink, but I usually find I have a plethora of things to spend mana on with this deck

Precursor Golem - Okay this card may not be great. Very high risk but I think it's pretty fun! Rite of replication can make a stupid amount of golems!

Blade Splicer - Make my golems even better! Maybe I should put wing splicer in here...

Whirler Rogue - Flying tokens and can help get Brago through

Wingmate Roc - Gives life and big flying tokens

Myr Battlesphere - Makes a ton of tokens and is a win condition with enough myr out

Cathars' Crusade - Win condition with even a few token makers and Brago out.

Protecting Brago

Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, Champion's Helm - All give protection from targeted spells.

Muddle the Mixture - Very rarely used as a counterspell, most of the time I just tutor for lightning greaves or swiftfoot boots.

Cloudshift, Eerie Interlude, Ghostly Flicker, Momentary Blink - These spells serve two purposes. They can be used to protect Brago or other important cards from targeted removal, and Eerie interlude can protect my board from wipes. In other situations I can use them to bounce something for an extra ETB trigger.

Mistmeadow Witch - Similar to those above. I don't think I've ever seen this card work too well for me, but I keep it in anyways because the synergy SEEMS so good. Maybe one day it will pay off, or I'll get tired of it and cut it. I just don't know what to do with it right now.

Deadeye Navigator - Too good not to include. I don't seem to draw this guy too often but I feel he's not too ridiculous in this deck. I guess you could use him to make infinite mana with the drake or whale. I'd rather just make tokens.

Miscellaneous

Archaeomancer - Get back my blink spells or removal

Karmic Guide - Get back my creatures. In this deck she might actually be worth paying the echo cost!

Sun Titan - Worst thing about this guy is you get all your peppermints back so fast you're left with no targets for him in the yard.

Skyship Weatherlight - Get one artifact/creature you want. Put it in your hand. Blink. Repeat. 4 mana repeatable tutor seems fair.

Stonehorn Dignitary - I'm the only one who gets beat down wins!

Rishadan Brigand - 3 mana tax to not sac a creature every turn.

Mind's Dilation - Just a cool card. I'm testing it here because I don't usually have problems getting extra mana in this deck.

Rite of Replication - I generally don't like cards that make you win as long as they resolve, which is why there is not cyclonic rift in this deck, but rite of replication is just too much fun with all the crazy interactions it has.

In trying to figure out why my deck has issues finishing games I took some inspiration from the 8X8 deck building strategy. I broke this deck down to 8 categories and split the cards between them to see if I was leaning on certain strategies too hard. The categories were

Mana Rocks - Ramp/Untap Land abilities - Tokens - Blink - Win Cons - Draw - Brago Support - Control.

I think most of that is self explanatory but I'll expand on some of those categories real quick. Brago are cards that give Brago an ability like hexproof or unblockable. Blink is an entire category because it supports the decks in two big ways. It can protect Brago and it can serve as a repetition for Brago's effect if he does not stick to the board.

What I found was that the control category was huge, big enough to be two categories, draw was also quite large, and all the other categories were a little small. I'm okay with draw being a little large, as this deck should provide me a lot of mana to cast a lot of spells and I'll need to be replacing them.

So here's what I decided to do. I'm going to try cutting down on the control elements of this deck, especially graveyard hate and counter spells, while buffing the other categories with one or two extra cards. I don't really need graveyard hate in this deck at the moment and I think I'd rather keep control cards that synergise with Brago over counterspells. I also got to add cards like Drowner of Hope and Duplicant that fit multiple rolls in the deck. I recognize that this might be the wrong approach. Keeping a mix of control methods, or even keeping all my control elements while removing a lesser category like tokens might make my deck more resilient while also leaving me room for more win-conditions, but I'd like to test my deck going all in on Brago value. So here are the changes.

Out - Syncopate, Render Silent, Counterspell, Dissipate, Trickbind, Tormod's Crypt, Augury Owl, Stonecloaker, Aqueous Form, End Hostilities

In - Champion's Helm, Solemn Simulacrum, Drowner of Hope, Momentary Blink, Darksteel Ingot, Thran Dynamo, Thought Vessel, Mind's Dilation, Cathars' Crusade, Duplicant

Cathars' Crusade and Mind's Dilation are two experimental win conditions. I don't know if they'll have enough impact to wrap up a game. Only playtesting will tell but I really like how cathars' crusade supports the token strategy.

I'll buy a copy of Cloud of Faeries, Palace Jailer and Eerie Interlude to add to this deck later.
