Have you looked into Faithless Looting? I always felt that my mardu deck needed a little card selection, and it works great with Lingering Souls and Kolaghan's Command.

I would replace the Dreadbore with Terminates for instant speed removal.

I used to run Terminate over Dreadbore but I am trying this out. So far it has come in as I have lots of other instant removal and Planeswalkers can be troublesome.

Faithless Looting is an interesting suggestion but I'm not sure how I can fit it in without removing some ever important hate cards.

The biggest issue I've run into with decks that utilize a "prowess" effect is that they're inconsistent. You need to keep a tight ratio of creatures vs. spells while also avoiding mana flood or screw since this deck doesn't have a great way to deal with either. I agree with rorofat, the filtering provided by Faithless Looting is invaluable here, and I think that after a few games you'll really appreciate the added consistency. Plus the flashback gives you another Pyro/Mentor trigger late in the game if needed.

I have found that a combination of Faithless Looting for filtering and Night's Whisper for raw card draw has given me very solid levels of card advantage... not quite comparable to blue but manageable. Furthermore, Looting/Whisper generate value immediately, no need to protect a body until next turn, and they also trigger your Young Pyromancer and Monastery Mentor on cast. I've personally found the combination of the two to be a superior card advantage suite for Mardu prowess.

Faithless Looting also fills your graveyard quite nicely, so if you wanted you could drop in 1-2 Gurmag Angler or Tasigur, the Golden Fang.

I'll put something together and pop back in once I've done a little testing.

shelldell I agree with faithless looting, but you can't play Angler or Tas in a deck like this with Bob. Bob is critical to the deck in raw resources, and tas or angler trigger will kill you.

Right, sorry, I should've been more explicit:

I'm suggesting that Bob be replaced by 3-4 Looting & 2-3 Whisper, which may sound blasphemous but seems to work out pretty well in practice.

shelldell I'd have to test myself, but having played a deck like this for awhile, Bob is really hard to replace.

I don't reccomend cutting bob - he provides much needed consistent advantage, whereas looting provides a little more filtering.

That's a really interesting idea and a suggestion, definitely my wallet likes the sound of it too lol. I'd be willing to playtest this and will let you know how it goes

Demention says... #15

To start I'm going to take out 2x Dreadbore and 1x Dark Confidant for 3x Faithless Looting to see how it goes with it in the mix then I may also test your angler / whisper theory

Hi I have been playing b/w tokens for half a year now and was wondering if you thought it was worth investing in this Mardu upgrade

February 27, 2016 12:37 p.m.

Demention says... #18

I really enjoy playing this deck but it doesn't play like a full on token deck, it's got burn, removal and other things. It is capable of winning with tokens but it doesn't put out near as many as a dedicated token deck. If you want more variety then I would say give it a try but it would be quite different from what you're playing now.

Ok thanks for the advise, I will give it a try when proxied and see if I like it but I do love the concept of the deck

Can you talk more about your experiences with Monastery Mentor and your ultimate decision to cut him for Young Pyromancer?

Thanks.

This deck needs to strongly consider Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, if you ask me. It's worked wonders for Jund, and Mardu's removal suite is arguably deeper.

March 15, 2016 5:09 p.m.

shelldell says... #23

Perhaps, though Kalitas seems better for a higher curve good-stuff build rather than a lower curve Pyro build.

In this deck you want to feed Pyro spells, he poops out tokens, and Butcher eats the tokens.

By switching to Kalitas you'd need to support him by moving from Path to Terminate, raising the curve and lowering the Peezy throughput. Kalitas also doesn't have any synergy with Peezy's tokens.

Whoa, dude! Was this the original build of Mardu Pyromancer? Sweet!

I like the directions you’ve gone to cover the explosive nature of the top decks right now, Leyline of Sanctity and ensnaring bridge should make the Phoenix matchup a breeze. When do you bring in Sorin? A little slow for burn I would imagine, is it there for the recursion in grindy matchups?
