Red/Black Tribal Vampire Deck

This deck's focus does not extend past that basic description. The objective of this deck is to effectively employ vampires and capitalize on their inherent synergy.

This deck needs to be able to strike rapidly and consistently with its creatures whilst maintaining their safety with direct removal, buffs and hex proofing or shroud. I will endeavor to improve upon this deck as time goes on. The deck list will reflect its current state, not an idealized iteration of it.

Advice and suggestions are more than welcome. Some of the descriptions still need completed.

Creatures

  • Anowon, the Ruin Sage : As the creature that cements the vampire-tribal aspect of the deck, he provides a progressive board-wipe. It should be noted that he can work in concert with Olivia Voldaren to proof allied creatures from his upkeep effect.
  • Asylum Visitor: ...Vampire draw power...
  • Bloodline Keeper   : One of the largest and most cost effective threats for tribal vampires, providing a constant stream of aerial vampires followed by +2/+2 post-transformation make him a worthy addition as a four-drop vampire.
  • Olivia Voldaren : Arguably the most iconic R/B vampire, providing removal, self-buffing and Mind Control . And she flies. She's a threat on multiple accounts, building up a significant amount of power through the utilization of her first ability.
  • Dark Impostor: A late-game threat at its finest, in my opinion. Capable of bypassing indestructibility, buffing himself and picking up a few extra tricks for his trouble from someone like Mikaeus, the Lunarch, utilizing the acquired abilities to great effect in some instances.
  • Rakish Heir & Vampire Nighthawk: The Heir is favorable in a predominantly black deck (as opposed to the Crossway Vampire and the like) and his ability synergizes well with vampires in possession of avoidance like the Nighthawk, who provides the the backbone of the majority of vampire tribal.
  • Stromkirk Captain : Personal favorite in R/B vampire-tribal, providing a flat P/T and first strike to all of his kin, making Vampire Nighthawk damnably difficult to eliminate in combat and providing a marked increase in effectiveness for my side of the board.
  • Gatekeeper of Malakir: Excellent ability that gets around all manner of protection, provided there's only one thing on the field to get rid of. Definitely useful.
  • Stromkirk Noble & Vampire Cutthroat : The Noble can grow into a serious threat (especially if Rakish Heir hits the board later) and the Cutthroat fills adds a needed source of life gain that remains plausible later due to skulk.

Artifacts, Sorceries & Instants

  • Lightning Greaves: Haste with an equip of zero help to up the attack tempo while shroud helps to protect supporting creatures and late game threats from being Celestial Purged or some such non-sense (which warrants the inclusion of additional copies).
  • Glaring Spotlight: Undermines certain tactics and allows for undeterred usage of spot-removal with the added utility of catalyzing an alpha-strike.
  • Lightning Bolt: Pure direct damage.

Sideboard

  • Crumble to Dust: ...answer to excessive dual lands...
  • Dragon's Claw: ...burn deck countermeasure...
  • Elixir of Immortality: ...life gain and anti-milling...
  • Grafdigger's Cage: Answer to dredging, scavenging, flashback and other graveyard shenanigans. It can be brought in instead of either Glaring Spotlight or Lightning Greaves depending on the situation.
  • Rakdos Charm: Slight cost inefficiency in favor of utility to deal with graveyard decks, an artifact and token-decks making an effective addition.
  • Vampire Hexmage: A reasonably cost effective vampire in its own right with the invaluable ability to almost instantly eliminate planeswalkers, and other counter-based creatures, with her activated ability. She can be swapped for the Gatekeeper of Malakir, considering the Hexmage will mostly be used against planeswalkers, thus rendering the Gatekeeper's kicker less useful. Additionally, this direct replacement will keep the mana curve intact.
  • Thought Hemorrhage : A more flavorful way of dealing with specific cards, though maybe not the most effective, it still warrants inclusion on the sideboard. Can be subbed in for one of the utility cards like, again, Glaring Spotlight which loses its effectiveness if a proper alpha-strike can't be coordinated (as a result of a card that Hemorrhage could deal with).
  • Witchbane Orb: Sound protection from a host of threats (though only one instance hampers the utility of it). An interesting and unique card.

Updates Add

Small, but important edit: swapping in Vampire Cutthroat for Vampire Lacerator.

Bloody Vampire Cutthroat is a fantastic addition to this deck since it adds an additional source of life gain which was previously lacking due to cards like Feast of Blood not being included any longer. Combined with the removal of the Lacerator's life loss mechanic, the net is a safer early game. Skulk is a nice edition and can keep the Cutthroat viable later. There is some anti-synergy with Rakish Heir since he undermines the usability of skulk, but that's a minor issue given the situation.
