why not Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ? easy way to accelerate in this deck...

I think that every vampire deck needs a Gatekeeper of Malakir or two. Or four.

Also in modern Smother or Go for the Throat is better than Doomblade.

February 26, 2014 3:29 a.m.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel doesnt realy keep the "vampires only" spirit. but it is a great card so i look the other way

Quag Vampires is an interesting choice multi-kicker is expensive but when swampwalk matters it is worth it. that being said Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is modern legal and will make your swampwalkers unblocable (its a shame that Dark Depths is banned in modern)

i think your mana count is low for a deck that goes up to 5, i suppose you are counting on Nykthos and Liliana to fix your mana, but i suggest going up to 22

as a sorcery and a conditional card Feast of Blood is not realy that good i think you should cut them for 1 Urge to Feed 1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth 1 (land of your choice) and 1 (cool 1-off you always liked)

if you feel that 8 removal is low i then would mainboard Gatekeeper of Malakir maybe 2 instead of 2 Captivating Vampire it will also diversify the removal so you have Destroy (doom blade) Sacrifice (gatekeeper) and Negative (urge to feed) so the only thing missing will be bordwipes

Yeah, i know... The Gray Merchant of Asphodel is to good a card to pass up in any monoblack deck.

The mana issue is something i am experiencing every 5-6 time i play.Get stuck on three mana and if this deck cant board its 4-drops its gonna lose every time. I have been wanting to put in two copies of Crypt Ghast but thats just yet another 4-drop. 4 mana is the key and for now so i am upping to 21 with 1 more Swamp for a Captivating Vampire . The Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth would be great, but i dont have any copies, and they are not cheap. If i could i would play 4 of them... easy.

The conditional Feast of Blood is actually quite uselfull. its the only lifegain i have appart from the Gray Merchant of Asphodel and it have been a lifesaver from time to time. Its quite rare i dont have two vamps on the board.

But im planning on expanding the deck into rakdos going with: Stromkirk Captain , Olivia Voldaren and Rakish Heir

Need to play at least 23-24 mana

Also, Take out Quag Vampires for Gatekeeper of Malakir , Blood Artist , or Kalastria Highborn

LtMiller117 says... #8

I know its sorcery speed, but consider Feast of Blood

@noobplayer17: Im not a beliver of having that much mana. Every time i have tried that i end up manaflooded. I might add just another swamp. the Blood Artist is just crap the way I see it. I have the Gatekeeper of Malakir in the maybeboard. The Quag Vampires has swampwalk and with Rakish Heir its just so powerful! In my area there are alot of black decks theese days!

@LtMiller117: I have the Feast of Blood in my maybeboard allready. Its sorcery and is conditional so for now it stays in the maybeboard

Feast of Blood > Go for the Throat

Vampire Hexmage seems like situational sideboard material to me. Quag Vampires is faster and more versatile to match game state, and Guul Draz Assassin can be decent removal.

Staro says... #11

@the5ervant I do see your point regarding the Vampire Hexmage , but with all the white heroic decks and green devotion decks its a must have. It might be that people in my area play theese dekcs alot. Feast of Blood is in the maybeboard allready. but removal is what saves this deck against faster decks. So the condition of 2 vamps have stalled my removal in the earlygame. I need the removal in here to fend of against devotion decks.

Terminate still going to be better than Go for the Throat . You can get 1 drop bodied on the board if you want to be faster. They can be pumped later using the other vamps you have.

March 11, 2014 10:30 a.m.

i dont know about Terminate over Go for the Throat this deck wants to be less commited to red whit so much double black in vampires ill probably wont run mountains. i see olivia being to hungry for red mana but still i would rather run a set of another B/R dual than mountains (also 4 of the same legendary can be tought...)

Sniper83 says... #14

Blackcleave Cliffs is perfect with your mana curve and you don't need to use mountains at all,

March 11, 2014 1:13 p.m.

Staro says... #15

Love the tips! I removed 2x Olivia Voldaren for 2x Gatekeeper of Malakir Also swapped out 4x Mountain for 4x Blackcleave Cliffs

Thanks guys! Please +1 if you like the deck

@the5ervant: dont forget that the Vampire Hexmage gives instakill on planeswalkers on sac. A 2/1 first strike with planeswalkerremoval for 2 black is just to good to pass up.

March 12, 2014 2:20 p.m.

Even whitout the Planeswalker Killing Vampire Hexmage is a great card and definitly one of the best 2-drops to the vampires better in the aggro than Blood Artist and Blood Seeker and better defensive than Bloodghast (Gatekeeper of Malakir doesnt count its a 3 drop)

Im not that sure about Quag Vampires how much do you need a 1-drop? have you considere Viscera Seer ? scray is realy good whit Vampire Nocturnus

March 12, 2014 4:24 p.m.

Staro says... #18

@SplinterAlfanumerico: yes scry is actually really good here. I might wanna try the Viscera Seer sometime.

Whenever i face a nonblack deck i sideboard out the Quag Vampires . But swampwalk + Rakish Heir is just amazing :)

The Guul Draz Assassin have made a huge impact on the deck! Probably the best late addition to the deck.

Sc1zX says... #20

Hey, I like the deck, but isn't Guul Draz Assassin a bit inefficient for removal? I mean, it takes a turn and 6 mana to even get to the point where he starts removing others. But you seem very enthousiastic about it, so yeah, how does it work out?

+1

April 20, 2014 6:13 p.m.

Staro says... #21

@scz: The Guul Draz Assassin is not something I count on for removal in all matchups. But against slivers its amazing if you start the game and have Guul Draz Assassin on your hand its gonna be a bad day to play slivers. Turn1 play the assassin, turn2: level up assassin and swing for 2, turn3: start removing creatures. Its kind of a big investment in one creature, but in some conditions it works at the beginning of the game. When he ends up being just a regular 1-drop he is something to spand mana on if you run out of steam...

April 21, 2014 12:47 a.m.

Sc1zX says... #22

But you'd have to level up twice before you can swing for two.

Although that does mean that you can swing for 2 in T3 and removal, assuming you spend all your mana of the first 3 turns on him.

kur0saki says... #23

How can there be a vampire deck without Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker ? He's the impersonation of vampirism!

April 21, 2014 3:34 a.m.

Staro says... #24

@ scz: no i dont need to level up twice... he is 2/2 with tap ability on level 2.

Turn 1: play Swamp & Guul Draz Assassin Turn 2: play Swamp & spend 2 mana on level up Guul Draz Assassin & swing for 2 damage.Turn 3: play Swamp , spend one mana on tap ability for -2/-2 and you still have 2 mana to spend on other removal or a hexmage.

@kur0saki: The deck used to be multicolored, but that was not fast enough for me. Besides, the milling doesnt really help that much. this deck is all about remove, remove, remove & smack your face with flyers.

April 21, 2014 2:12 p.m.

Sc1zX says... #25

But he starts at level 0
