I normally prefer trying to aggro out, especially on the play, against decks that run silumgar drifting death or dragonlord ojutai you wanna try aggro out because those two can really turn an opponents game around, against other aggro you either choose to out aggro generally you can except against artarka red, which you try block and kill their creature with till you pull Shorecrasher and whirler rogue out, most games the preferred play is, faerie miscreant, into dancer into warhorn, followed by counter magic, faerie miscreant into mirror mockery is also a solid play if you keep it alive, the more you play with the deck the easier it'll become for you

Any plans for a non-budget version? how would suck deck look like?

I'd maybe wanna throw in some hangarback walkers and flooded strands or deltas(would probably up the land count by two or so), ive also thought of throwing in day's undoing, but I don't feel much needs to change just yet

Just went 0-3 this FNM.To be fair, i attended a new shop because my last LGS went out of business sadly and it was also the very first time piloting the deck in a new meta. I had a blast playing it however. Mirror mockery was a blast to play around with but Harbinger of the Tides was definitely the all star. I sent many counter filled hangerbacks back to their owners hands and it was glorious. I love the deck and I hope to get more experience with it.Just a few questions however.

1.Any tips against Hardened Scales deck?

2.What is an ideal hand to keep and which ones to avoid like the plague?

  1. I'm pretty bad at side boarding. What do you usually remove/add when playing against aggro/control/jeskai etc.?

Thank you for making this gem of a deck!

no prob man, thanks for using the deck, ideally 2/3 land in opening hand with ideal a drop, a status dancer and a war horn with ideally a counter spell, although it's all match up dependant, for the sideboard, against control I normally pull out three mirror mockery and put in three dispel, against aggro I pull out the mirror mockerys, scatters, negates and one harbinger and throw in dispels, bell strikes and horribly awrys, against jeskai I take out harbingers, mockerys, one war horn, one faerie miscreant, 2 negates and one scatter and side in dispels, bell strikes, 2 horribly awrys and two reality shifts, normally that's sorta how I sideboard but it's very match up dependant

While I have yet to use this deck, it did get me into actually using some aggro with my newest Living Lore deck, which in turn got me going from losing all of my games to an even win/loss ratio. Just into my fifth or sixth game night yesterday since I only play FNM. And each loss coulda been a win, most literally a turn away.

I use unblockable aggro creatures like Elusive Spellfist, Gudul Lurker, and Marang River Prowler for black or Jeskai Infiltrator for mono blue. No removal or blockers like this deck, but I used Black to add power and lifelink. The fact that I could go even with people playing twenty years shows the strength of Blue aggro I think. Though I still have trouble with Red/Green Aggro.

Will be trying a full on Blue Aggro next week with Stratus Dancer as a counter spell added. Though I found Stubborn Denial and Dispel much more effective than Negate or Glint.

Do you not have trouble sparing two mana for your counters? Or winning counter duels?

Anyways, thanks for the brain kickstart. While I have an aversion to copying decks, I did get a lot out of this.

Oh man, I tried it again, and absolutely wasted my friend with this deck. Turned out I just needed to shuffle better, wasn't starved for land at all, and even without sideboarding, kept amazing tempo and a mostly full life counter til I wiped him!

awesome glad the deck did as well for you as it does for me

Hey,

First off, congratulations and thank you pacman97edition for creating such a fun and low cost deck for us mono-blue fans.

I tried to tune the deck too, mainly utilizing Halimar Tidecaller replacing Shorecrasher Elemental as the 3-drop, utilizing awaken in both Scatter to the Winds and Rush of Ice (I've toyed with Clutch of Currents and it'll only hold blockers back for a turn instead of two turns with Rush of Ice). Halimar only had a decent 2/3 but the ability to return both Scatter and Rush of Ice can be a soft lock a la Forbid + Ophidian .

Halimar is a good card, if only she was 2 CMC and a rare, people would play her more, even as a down specced Snapcaster. Imagine targeting her with Ojutai's Command!!

Mirror Mockery is a great underused versatile card, I've even experimented with U/B for enchanting it with Fleshbag Marauder (Edict every turn) and Sidisi, Undead Vizier (recurring tutor). I'm still happy everytime I pull either one off. So I went with it in my last FNM and lost most of the time. Badly. For a deck with a low curve I even manage to get mana-screwed.

So for the sake of streamlining the deck and ensuring no hairpulling between turns, I decide it is best to go back to the righteous path of mono-blue.

Sorry for the long post, so here's where I am now :

Clutch of Currents can be used on your own creatures when you have no Mirror Mockery or used it on your Halimar Tidecaller.

You sure you can't just use both? Once one of them is in the graveyard, its like having an infinite supply anyways. And returned tokens are exiled as opposed to just tapped.

November 22, 2015 2:01 p.m.

thanks finalfortune, one thing I noticed was mirror mockerys high synergy with black stuff and exploit, it really is a weird lovely card that I love abusing

November 22, 2015 6:02 p.m.

Loreshadow says... #12

Kheru Bloodsucker in particular.

Turn your exploit return attacks into lifelink attacks. 4 toughness isn't that uncommon among creatures that sync with Mirror Mockery. And cards like Gravedigger let you abuse exploit without it. It also works well with Mizzium Meddler to keep a ready supply of target shifting in your hand while stacking your next couple draws. Meanwhile, Day's Undoing grabs the rest. Learn from the Past if you're poor.

You can always delve to screen beforehand with Treasure Cruise or even Temporal Trespass. This deck could use those even since it doesn't resurrect. One blue for three cards, or three for another turn.

These two below are some of the better candidates.

Sidisi's Faithful

Profaner of the Dead

Indirect aggro damage and lifegain.

No need for evasion to hit.

And if you mockery kheru, you double the effect. 4 damage and 4 life per every one of your creatures that die, then whatever creatures get through after returning defenders to their owner's hand. Throw in a Butcher's Glee for 3 more damage, 3 more life, and regeneration.

Definitely a fun concept to try.

FinalFortune says... #13

Liking the non-combat angle with Kheru there, Loreshadow. I suppose Zulaport Cutthroat can be thrown into the mix too. It'll be less aggro but can play longer games.

I'll try going with mono-blue on my next FNM, if it doesn't pan out I'll try going U/B again

November 22, 2015 10:25 p.m.

you can mirror mockery cutthroat in an aristocrat deck to get double sac triggers with nantuko husk after you've declared attackers

I tried making the deck on deckstats but got distracted and now its been delegated to a sideboard. It is a very compact strategy once you remove the regeneration. Can fit into any UB deck.

My first FNM in 12 months. Had some close games, but an overall dismal performance. Pretty sure I side boarded wrong all night. 0-3I won a single game all night.

Side note. I drew ZERO war horns the entire night! Had to mulligan many times. Could just have had bad luck.

Match 1 hardened scales. Held back playing creatures to work counter magic. Didn't work.

Match 2 B/W warriors splash for CoCo. Both games close, but never drew any gas. Mana flooded. Didn't see any of the TWELVE side boarded cards.

Match 3 Mono Green Ramp Countered FIVE fatties. Life gain hurt me.

Ran out of counters BOTH losses to Void Winnower

Hope I get another crack at it. Had fun playing the deck and think I'll get the hang of it.

Takeaways - if you have a creature to cast for the first three turns ALWAYS cast it. Bounce and counter AFTER you have a board presence.

I welcome any tips anyone might have!!!

1st place in today's FNM, at the smaller LGS in my town to see how it performs before going in the usual more competitive LGS.

Match 1, some janky Villainous Wealth deck. 2-0

Match 2, RG Landfall with Omnath deck. 2-0

Match 3, BW Warriors deck. Got pressured back by a couple Shambling Vents on game 2 before losing the board. Went full speed on game 3. 2-1

Overall, Halimar Tidecaller is my MVP, few times locking my opponent with either Scatter to the Winds and Rush of Ice.

No mana-screw of any kind today.

What would you swap out to add in some Hangarbacks?

November 29, 2015 3:16 a.m.

Jgentr3 try not hold back to much, play aggressively, also the war horn bad luck doesn't help it turns 3 into 5 damage which wins you a game three turns earlier, well done FinalFortune, glad your deck is working, m.ostlund95 I'd probably take out the harbinger of the tides to be honest, Shorecrasher could be dropped depending on your playstyle, I just require him to much

November 29, 2015 5:32 a.m.

Cool deck! Lots of comments! I'm a fan of mono colored decks obviously, but some Thopter Spy Networks would help the whirler rogue. Maybe some Dispels in your sideboard. Salvage Drone is some early game draw power. Also, if u have good draw Sphinxes tutelage.

November 29, 2015 1:33 p.m.

Artificier's Epiphany is also a good draw with artifacts.

November 29, 2015 1:52 p.m.

Why do you have AssualtFormation in your maybe board and torrent elemental?

November 29, 2015 1:54 p.m.

maybe board is card recommendations that I've liked, cards that could be used for alternative versions of the deck, torrent elemental makes a more midrangey deck and using Shorecrasher who can buff his toughness with assault formation could hit hard, draw is not too much of a problem in the deck, the faerie miscreants normally suffice, I thought about adding tutelage to side board

November 30, 2015 9:26 a.m.

Loreshadow says... #25

Sphinx's Tutelage without 1-3 turn mill finish can just fuel your opponent's combos. Whether it uses Delve or Card Return. It can act as a mana booster or search card that does not cost your opponent anything. Better to play Monastery Siege for the card search or removal protection to save on counterspells. Or Retreat to Coralhelm to create early and consistent tapping of defenders for your little stingers to hit.
