KW gives them a choice though. and with no creatures of his own he has no way to put the life total pressure on.

Ohthenoises - Plus there's kind of a weird negative synergy because so much of the deck is kill. Killing Wave is most efficient when your opponent has a LOT of creatures, and my opponents rarely have a LOT of creatures.

It also, of course, works best when you have other stuff to damage your opponent, which I do not.

Hence my suggestion of mutilate. You can usually count on 2 swamps so I think -2/-2 could be relevant.

Is someone really suggesting Killing Wave for a Control deck?

Come on, people. I thought we were better than that.

Ever considered Witchbane Orb or Elixir of Immortality ? I know normally you don't need them but, the last daily dose got me thinking. You seem to go through alot of your deck. If someone happened to be able to stall you to that point it may be bad. Hence the elixir. As well as the burn deck you faced. Throw one or two in your sideboard and all that burn.... well you get the picture

@dbrannon - Witchbane Orb I have considered occasionally, but I don't think it's better than other options, at least not right now.

The same is more true of Elixir of Immortality . Yeah, I can gain life and avoid mill with it, but is that usually going to be better than stuff I already have? I don't think so currently. Always have to keep an eye on that stuff when the new set comes out though.

Dunno id say its worth cutting a Pithing Needle and a illness or grafdiggers. Up to you though

My experiences on things mentioned:

-Mutilate as everyone has suggested, has been a middle to high performer, depending on the build/what you draw. I've been fortunate enough to be packing 9 swamps between 4 Blood Crypt 4 Watery Grave plus 1 Swamp that it can sideboard in for the control matchup and go 2 Barter in Blood 2 Mutilate and swing the aggro game well, but you HAVE to put the money in to getting there for that all important "Swamp" hit on the shocklands. Anyway, you can usually reliably hit 3 Swamps, and that's enough to wipe most decks if you're careful.

-Mind Grind has also done exceptionally well for me out of the sideboard and in the main. If main boarded, it becomes an easy sideboard choice if you know it won't be effective (Aggro Matchups), and in Side, it shows up when it needs to. The card is flat out amazing for me in Control if you -3 to keep a Counterflux up. Just count and you're good.

-Witchbane Orb has been mixed for me. I occasionally get it after the sideboard and it can stop stuff, but I don't know about going out of my way for it. I feel meh about it right now and kind of want to drop it for something with a little more flexibility.

I love this deck. The only problem i was having with play testing was not drawing a Nicol Bolas/drownyard. U could possibly run a Jace, Memory Adept . It's additional mill to help your drownyards and it doesn't disrupt your creature less theme. Just one more kill con if you think you need it. +1

@wtfisjuice True, he is another wincon. My reasoning re: him is that he's really best against control decks, which I already beat pretty badly. He'd probably go in instead of Staff of Nin , but I like the Staff better, I think.

I tryed out my version of this deck @ FNM, it was very fun and performed really well.

Have you thought about using Dimir Charm over Devour Flesh and Tribute to Hunger over Murder ?

Mind playtesting this against my zombie deck? Wanna see how it does vs a good deck. undying nightmares no daily dose or anything. Thanks

KrazyCaley says... #15

@Darsul - Why Dimir Charm over Devour Flesh ?

I do try to keep Murder in there because having SOME targeted removal is important.

April 7, 2013 8:09 p.m.

Darsul says... #16

Changing both keeps some targeted removal (creature power 2 or less and you always have Dreadbore ) but, the change would also keep you better shape vs. a mirror match. Plus its all way fun (for you, of course) to keep a mana flooded opponent flooded. charm + Mystic Retrieval keep you in control of their draws.

Caley, don't know if you saw the reveal today, but Ral Zarek has been spoiled. He feels like a great fit for the deck as almost another Tamiyo.

2UR

4 Loyalty

+1: Tap target permanent, then untap target permanent.

-2: Ral Zarek deals 3 Damage to target creature or player

-7: Flip 5 coins. Take an extra turn after this one for each coin that comes up heads.

Use Gilded Lotus and a land to play him, use him to tap their whatever then untap the lotus and BAM you have Murder mana.

The part that I liked about him was that if you manage to ult him and he survives you can potentially get him back up to 6 loyalty if you win all of your flips.

April 8, 2013 9:05 a.m.

Nerdcore says... #19

Dang right... I was actually thinking targeting another Planeswalker that you control with him, as then there's no downside to it, or hitting an already tapped land. Guy seems downright amazing for this setup. Toil//Trouble also seemed pretty good. (Toil is a Sign in Blood, and Trouble deals damage for each card in the player's hand. It's got the Fuse, so for 6 you can drain them for 4+, seems legit here)

Anyone have any idea how this deck would handle itself in a Modern tournament? We've got one at our FNM this week and I've just found all the cards for this deck and desperately want to try it out regardless of format! Will I be sitting there every game with all the answers to most standard tournament decks in my hand but just fail completely to answer the cards put in front of me from the modern format? I have no idea as I've never played modern before!

April 8, 2013 11:46 a.m.

KrazyCaley says... #21

@Nerdcore - I am extremely dubious. His ultimate is nice, of course. His +1 basically just says "untap a land" as far as this deck is concerned, and his -2, while decent, is indeed a -2. Basically, I really wish that +1 did something better. Not sure he's worthy of inclusion.

@Aelfstan - You will lose. This deck is far too slow for modern.

meecht says... #22

Caley, his +1 could untap Gilded Lotus , Nephalia Drownyard , Staff of Nin , or Desolate Lighthouse .

April 8, 2013 6:26 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #23

That.

April 8, 2013 6:32 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #24

@meecht - True, of course. But the point was that the "tap something" ability is essentially useless here.

April 8, 2013 6:42 p.m.

DarkHero says... #25

I came here specifically to damnd this be done in this deck, but others seem to have stolen the thunder. The new Ral Zarek planeswalker that was spoiled, just imgine how quickly you can get out Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker when you tapping and untapping Gilded Lotus !! If ever a planeswalker fit in this deck that wasnt Bolas himself, its Ral Zarek.
