User Bookrook threw down the gauntlet of challenge. The obscure card we both had to build around?

Splintering Wind

I begged for pistols at dawn, Bookrook said No. I offered to wear a blindfold and leave my pistol unloaded; Bookrook still said No. When the world asks why it had to suffer the existence of this godforsaken pile of cards, you now know the answer.

I ended up needing a lot more white mana than expected, but Vintage makes this a super easy build. There are no budget concerns in these fanciful challenge decks so multiple $1K+ OG dual lands—sure! Why not!

Forest just a few. We get most of the green from the duals.

Plains a bit more plain white was necessary to give us a buffer.

•For a build that probably rates in the negative on the competitive meter, Brushland’s 1 point ping to our life total is absolutely immaterial.

•I do declare, SavannahI say, Savannah—is as good as it gets for a deck.

•More easy mana with Temple Gardenfoil.

Windswept Heath to grab whichever we need.

Arbor Elf can ramp a bunch of our lands so it felt like a good fit.

Lots of pieces to find. Not enough time to wait for them to come to us, so let’s go looking for them.

Harmonize is a mediocre draw spell but it’s the best we can do.

Eladamri's Call is important to locate Zirda or Boros Reckoner with.

Commune with the Gods can grab key creatures and also our Challenge Card.

Sterling Grove pulls double duty. It can find our Challenge Card and it will also protect it.

This panel block is kind of redundant if you read the last one. It’s late at night, I don’t care. Anyway, these are the specific cards we have to locate through natural draws, digging or tutoring.

Zirda, the Dawnwaker

Splintering Wind

Phyrexian Altar

Boros Reckoner, Angel's Grace and Tamiyo's Safekeeping

Is it convoluted? Yes. Is it a well oiled, efficient machine? …No. Is it kind of neat to turn a doo doo card into something useable, even if it takes the stars to align for it to happen? Definitely.

Here’s the basic walkthrough. You want to have Splintering Wind in play (I am officially the first person in history to ever type that combination of words).

Follow it up by casting Zirda, the Dawnwaker—we want his discount on activated abilities. Throw down a Phyrexian Altar and now the whole loop is free. Pay once for that worthless Splinter token, sacrifice it to the Altar for a , use that to make a new one and so forth. But what’s the purpose of this token killing machine? Add Boros Reckoner and two Tamiyo's Safekeeping (one for the bull, one for the fox) to the equation and you have an infinite damage loop. Just remember to cast Angel's Grace before you accidentally destroy yourself in the process.

•Ignore everything else and work on assembling the combo pieces. A switchblade under the table works wonders at motivating overeager opponents into playing in a manner more conducive to us pulling off our gameplan.

•Cast Splintering Wind, Phyrexian Altar and Zirda, the Dawnwaker.

•Cast Boros Reckoner and immediately hit both him and Zirda with a Tamiyo's Safekeeping so they’re temporarily immortal.

•Cast Angel's Grace so you don’t kill yourself during the following step.

•Create one of those crappy tokens and direct the incidental damage to Boros Reckoner and have him redirect it across the table. Sacrifice said token to the Altar, have it deal its terrifying 1 damage point to Boros Reckoner and reflect that at your opponent. Use the from the Altar to make another token, then keep repeating that process while your opponent asks you how you live with yourself. Shamefully scoop up your cards and walk away with your head hung low.

No amount of side boarding could make this even remotely playable.

”A craftsman made it, and it is not God; The calf of Sa·marʹi·a will be reduced to splinters.”
