I was really impressed with how effective the new mill was during the pre-release tournaments; especially given how haphazard decks tend to be because of the nature of sealed. So this deck was one I wanted to make right away.
The idea is simple disrupt and mill and as a fall back wail on your opponent with creatures that should be of unreasonable size even if the mill is not working at top notch speed. I will be replacing the guildgates with painlands as soon as possible but for now the gates work fine.
Basic control includes Cancel, Essence Scatter, Murder, and
Grisly Spectacle
- which is just a four mana Murder that also mills. To add to the disruption I am using Chronic Flooding and Contaminated Ground which I have already found to be monstrously effective in making an opponent think twice about using a land. Putting them on shocklands is particularly effective - esspecially in the case of Contaminated Ground which in addition to causing pain for use makes any land into a swamp.
Fog Bank was a given for this deck and gives breathing room; likewise Jace's Phantasm is an no brainer in a mill deck.
Consuming Aberration is just disgusting and should be in every mill deck from now on.
The dirtiest little bit is Balustrade Spy,
Faerie Impostor
and
Keymaster Rogue
. Play a spy bounce it with the
Faerie Impostor
or
Keymaster Rogue
, rinse and repeat. If you have gotten a Consuming Aberration out on turn 5 you can play the spy and bounce it in the same turn leaving you free to play the spy again the next turn. Not mention when you play the spy not only does his ability trigger but so to does the abberation's same when you cast the faerie to bounce the spy. Until mid to late game you will have to live with playing the spy and bouncing it the next if you're only pulling keymasters.
Mind Grind
is just a great mill spell and becomes even more effective when one or more abberations are out.
The sideboard is mainly aimed at dealing with some situational stuff; paticularly creature heavy decks, tokens and graveyard play. Actually graveyard play is common enough where I play I might mainboard Tormod's Crypt; this is about the fifth iteration of this deck already though and I will not change it again until I see how it plays this Friday.
