@ Mattman384 -- It takes a while to get used to. Only recently did I start playing it somewhat efficiently (though I missed lethal two games in a row last night, still won, just a turn later). My suggestion to you is remember your priorities. Ultimately it comes down to slowing your opponent down, then killing them with the Owl, Colonnade, or Batterskull. Lately I haven't had the Owl hit the board until my 5th turn+, since most decks in Modern will dump 3-5 cards before I drop the Owl. Also remember that the Colonnade has vigilance, so if you have 5/6 lands + a Colonnade then you can swing and still have 1/2 up for counters/bounce. It's obvious but I seem to always forget.

Let me know how your testing goes! It's certainly not tier 1, but when you can get a Scepter going it's pretty fun and even wins sometimes.

@ Jonatanvc94 -- Thank you for the comment and +1! As a general note, it's usually a good idea to leave more than one line if you're going to ask for someone to check out your deck, especially when it's completely unrelated and on their own deck list.

It is quite disappointing that you have a good matchup against 4C Gifts, because that's the deck I play :P

December 14, 2014 12:35 p.m.

@ vault -- I'm honestly not familiar with the deck that much, but the one I played against didn't really do anything... I'm not sure what his version was supposed to do, but both games had me shutting down most of his plays. Game one I Muddle the Mixtured two Gifts, dropped Eidolon of Rhetoric, and the Owl got him a few turns later. Game two I had two Scepters, one with Silence and the other Remand. Owl got him again with the help of a couple Colonnade swings.

Well, countering Gifts Ungiven is a pretty good way to beat a Gifts deck. Resolving Gifts is probably going to beat you. They'll fetch Life from the Loam + Raven's Crime and there's almost no way for a control deck to come back from that.

December 14, 2014 1:54 p.m.

@ vault -- I was certainly playing against a jank build then, he resolved Gifts once and got Oblivion Ring, Noxious Revival, another Gifts, and something else... I was very confused to say the least so I assumed this was a weird build to start. You know, now that I think about it, I never checked his deck size. The cards I saw were somewhat random. Maybe he was playing a bunch of singletons or a bigger deck? I'm curious now, I probably should have noticed that..

That is definitely the most bizarre Gifts deck I've ever heard of.

December 14, 2014 5:40 p.m.

@ vault -- It certainly was bizarre. He was playing things that I assumed were big Gifts cards like Elesh Norn (maybe its usually in some Gifts?), but I had a Vapor Snag on a Scepter so she never stuck. I was under the impression Gifts was supposed to win as long as it resolved but he seemed to be trying to answer my deck rather than winning. It was a 2-0 for this deck so I'm somewhat happy, but wish it was against something a little more legitimate.

Yeah, Elesh Norn is a pretty common Gifts target, but those other cards you mentioned are totally out there. A good Gifts list to check is A Little Lesson In Recursion Theory, or my own list, which isn't as good.

December 14, 2014 6:11 p.m.

@ vault -- That's what I would've guessed for a typical Gifts list. I'm not sure what I played, I just called it 4C Gifts because it was a 4-color deck that ran Gifts Ungiven. From the looks of it, that was a rather poor label :P

Back to this deck, do you think I should be looking to add Boomerang? There are a lot of games that it could help, but I have no idea where to fit it in.

That's a tough one. If anything, I'd go down on Remand by 2 copies or so.

December 14, 2014 6:20 p.m.

@ vault -- I was thinking cutting one Remand, but the card draw really helps when I don't slap it on a Scepter. One of my opponents suggested dropping a Muddle, but I'm not sure how I feel about that. I think I may test a Muddle and a Remand for two of them. What do you think about that?

December 14, 2014 6:30 p.m.

-Fulcrum says... #14

Actually, cut down one Remand and one Rev. You already have 2 Dig, you don't need 2 Rev, and Remand honestly doesn't really need to be more than a 2-of in anything other than combo. You can play 3, and it's decent enough, but I would not remove any Muddle the Mixture, unless you find it to be playing unsatisfactorily.

December 14, 2014 10:33 p.m.

@ vault -- That's a good point. I was actually thinking about that dropping a Revelation. They're occasionally helpful, but Dig does much more for me. I'll drop one Remand and one Sphinx's Revelation for two Boomerangs

Love the idea. Here's a few cards to consider Howling Mine, Dictate of Kruphix, Temple Bell, Jace Beleren, and Enlightened Tutor. Since your goal is to keep their hand full the extra draw for your opponent works in your favor and goes great with Eidolon of Rhetoric. The tutor feels like an absolute must as it will let you find most of your important pieces. Cheers.

@Captain_AHat: Enlightened Tutor isn't Modern legal.

December 19, 2014 5:57 p.m.

@ Captain_AHat -- As vault said, Enlightened Tutor isn't Modern legal. Using Howling Mine and other cards with similar abilities leads to a deck commonly referred to as "Owling Mine." I've opted to try a different build, and this is a result. As for your tutor concern, I have Muddle the Mixture.

Rule of Law? It's Eidolon of Rhetoric, but harder to blow up. Also maybe Void Snare, as it just bounces anything except lands for one blue, which seems good to me XD.

January 10, 2015 6:47 p.m.

@ poistapoista -- It may be harder to remove, but the Eidolon is an excellent blocker. The biggest problem for this deck is creatures, so Vapor Snag is much better than Void Snare. It's also instant speed. Thank you for the suggestions :)

I like this deck a lot! It's just screaming for a Legacy Stasis variant :P

This is pretty out of my comfort zone, so I'm not sure if I can really offer you decent advice. Spell Pierce and Cryptic Command may be helpful here. Have you thought about going Esper, and adding in Waste Not or Megrim?. Your opponent will inevitably be forced to discard, after all.

January 14, 2015 1:12 a.m.

@ slovakattack -- Thank you for the comment and upvote! Honestly, this is out of my comfort zone too. Modern in general is new to me, and I wanted to run something that I could turn some heads with (if it works). I really hope I don't need Spell Pierce, I just traded away my last one :( I've always had Cryptic Command in the back of my mind, but the cost ($$) holds me back from wanted to playtest it.

As for discarding, you have the same thought I had when I first made the deck. After playtesting it a bit though, I realized that opponents usually take a while to rebuild their hand back to seven. By that point, they might discard one card per turn which really isn't a lot for discard punishments. It adds a clock to the game, but it would come online about when I can start swinging with a Celestial Colonnade or pinging with the Owl.

Chalice of the Void would be great in here as a way to slow down faster decks and make opponents hold a lot of cards.

January 20, 2015 10:32 p.m.

Dig Through Time just got banned... It really sucks for control decks...

January 20, 2015 10:40 p.m.

@ hbomb33 -- Despite its monetary cost, you're right about Chalice. It shuts down burn and really slow down affinity, among other things. Where should I find room for it?

@ JustinHangingtree -- Ahh yes, I have yet to update the list. Back to two Revelations and probably a Boomerang. Other thoughts?

Thank you both for the thoughts, and don't forget to upvote if you like the deck! Keep the suggestions coming!
