Gameday Champion tournament report! —April 19, 2015

Round 1: G/R Dragons (CVM's list) [2-0]

Removal lined up well against opponent's threats, kept him off turn 3 Thunderbreak Regent with a Foul-Tongue Invocation on his lonely Sylvan Caryatid He misses his next land drop and I resolve my own regent with Hero's Downfall and another Invocation in hand for his next play. Tempo him out for the rest of game 1.

Game 2 was almost identical to game 1, except my opponent played Thunderbreak Regent right into a Dragonlord Kolaghan trigger and lost the game on the spot.

Round 2: RDW with green splash (Pro Tour winning list) [2-1]

B/R Dragons has a solid matchup versus the versions of this deck without Atarka's Command. Because we lean heavily on Foul-Tongue Invocation to stay at a high enough life total to not get burned out, the Skullcrack effect is back breaking.

After the die roll, my opponent is on the play(Bad news). Typical rdw start with Foundry street into double creature puts me under the gun right off the bat. Steal the game away from him with one of the maindecked Anger of the Gods and a couple Foul-Tongue Invocation to keep my life total high.

For game 2, board in the 3rd Anger of the Gods The Virulent Plague, the two Ultimate Price and Duress. Taking out Thoughtseize Read the Bones Damnable Pact and a Hero's Downfall. Another great start from my opponent, I anger the board and take some damage from Eidolon of the Great Revel. I attempt to stabilize with Foul-Tongue Invocation and I get hit with Atarka's Command. Which also cuts me off the 1 life gain from the Bloodfell Caves that I should have played before invocation to play around command. I'll have to remember that for next time. -_- He burns me out and we go to game 3.

Game 3 I keep the board clear with removal and the game comes down to the wire. Hanging on with little life left, I play Dragonlord Kolaghan. My opponent plays Eidolon of the Great Revel and takes ten from Kolaghan trigger and loses the game.

Round 3: G/R Dragons (CVM's list) Again! [2-0]

This match ended very quickly with 2 games where the deck runs perfectly with early disruption, removal, and Dragon beats to end the games.

Round 4: Jund Dragons [2-0]

Game 1 starts with my opponent on the play. He plays a Temple of Abandon and passes. I Thoughtseize his hand and see he has 2 Sylvan Caryatid 2 Stormbreath Dragon Dragonlord Atarka and 1 land. With an Anger of the Gods in my opening hand I take a Stormbreath Dragon. His turn 2, he plays one of his Caryatid and passes. I Thoughtseize him again and take the other Stormbreath. His draw for the turn was another land. I pass the turn and he plays his second Sylvan Caryatid. On my turn I cast Anger of the Gods and he never has a chance to come back for the rest of the game.

Game 2 was a lot closer, we trade resources, between chump blocks and removal I keep his side of the board clear. I resolve Dragonlord Kolaghan knowing the only card left in his hand is Ultimate Price. He casts Thunderbreak Regent into a Kolaghan trigger and loses the game on the spot.

Final Round: Bant Heroic (Tom Ross's updated list)

Game 1 he's on the play. I play Draconic Roar onto a Favored Hoplite. He responds with Gods Willing. Next turn he casts Defiant Strike and hits me for 4. He plays another hoplite and passes the turn. I roar the second hoplite and then Foul-Tongue Invocation the big hoplite on the following turn. He plays a Hero of Iroas and passes. I stabilize the game with a Stormbreath Dragon and finish him with Dragonlord Kolaghan.

Game 2 I keep a reasonable hand with disruption and removal. Two lander with a Temple of Malice. I never draw a third land and lose the game very quickly.

Game 3 I board in 4 Goblin Rabblemaster. The game is pretty anti-climactic. He doesn't have a turn 1 or turn 2 play. I play a Goblin Rabblemaster and Foul-Tongue Invocation his first and second creature. Rabble just runs away with the game. My opponent was a good friend of mine, and it was a relief when he reached out for the hand shake. Finally got a Gameday Champion playmat!

I think after playing this deck over the last few weeks (Since DTK was released), this deck is the real deal and has what it takes to be competitive. Would definitely recommend it to anyone. Especially if you want to beat your opponents over the head with flying, lightning-breathing, hasty monsters!
