Maybeboard

Welcome to my competitive Brago deck. This is my first entry into competitive EDH deckbuilding. I would like to thank the members and mentors in the /r/competitiveedh subreddit and discord for all of their help and explanations about their approach to deckbuilding.

My Brago, King Eternal list is built with a competitive mindset. Our primary win condition (win-con) revolves around creating absurd amounts of mana and using it to resolve game ending threats at instant speed. Our secondary win-con is using efficient stax and removal strategies to decimate our opponent's board states and create an inevitable victory. Here is how it works:

Flicker Engine

  • Our Flicker Engine (a repeatable sequence of card activations that nets us additional resources on each repetition) requires Brago, Strionic Resonator, and worth of mana rocks.

  • The first step is to connect with Brago. Once his ability is on the stack, we will activate Strionic Resonator targeting Brago's triggered ability that is still on the stack.

  • We will then use the copy of Brago's ability to target both Strionic Resonator AND the mana rocks we used. This allows us to resolve the copied ability, having our resonator and the mana rocks re-enter untapped. Now we can copy the first Brago trigger again, and again, and again. We can choose how many times we want to do this and can stop at any time. This is our flicker combo/engine.

  • We will also use our cards' ETB and tap effects to make mana, draw cards, remove our opponent's permanents, and generally exploit other synergies we include in our deck.

Making Mana

Drawing Cards

  • Oath of Jace, Prophetic Prism, and Sea Gate Oracle can all help us draw through our deck during our flicker combo. This can allow us to find Shimmer Myr and Walking Ballista or to find Blue Sun's Zenith multiple times and deck our opponents out.

  • We can also combine RoB, BM, and Sensei's Divining Top to draw through our entire deck outside of our flicker combo.

  • Flickering Mystic Remora will also reset it's cumulative upkeep, making sure we never have to play more than

Winning the Game

  • Once we can draw our deck and create effectively infinite mana, we need to win the game.

  • Our first and most painful option is to us Venser, Shaper Savant, Rishadan Footpad, or Rishadan Cutpurse effects to remove every permament our opponents own. This allows us to slowly grind them down with small damage. It feels mean and will tick people off.

  • Our second option is to cast Walking Ballista with many +1/+1 counters and machine gun our opponents dead. We can do this at instant speed with Shimmer Myr during our combat step when our flicker engine is running.

  • Our third option is to cast Blue Sun's Zenith, targeting our opponent's, with X=more than they have cards in their deck. This will make them lose the game, and shuffle BSZ back into our library. Then we can draw it again with our engine, and cast it on the next opponent, etc.

Now we can go through the rest of our card choices that support our win-cons. Our Stax cards have two main criteria. The first is that they hit the most common cEDH strategies. The second is that we can break parity (dodge the effect) with Brago's flicker effect. Our Control cards need to be instant speed, efficiently costed, and ideally provide some versatility. Our Tutors need to hit our game winning cards.
