Why the flickerwisp?

If there's a Rule of Law/Trinisphere/Linvala or some similarly strong hatepiece out, you can get Flickerwisp along with the Cephalid combo off Hulk to remove that piece until EoT and combo off.

What is the replacement for Bazaar of Baghdad?

May 1, 2017 9:02 p.m.

LabManiac_Sigi says... #6

Hey Frank - sadly, there isn't really one. The deck will lose a tiny bit of power by not having Bazaar, but it's not too bad. It should still function just fine if you replace Bazaar with a cheaper land that fits the colour requirements.

Hey would Vizier of Remedies be a good add to this deck?

LabManiac_Sigi says... #8

It used to be in older iterations as another backup win condition, but I never ended up using it, so it got cut for something that lets me focus on my main lines instead.

Hey Sigi sorry for asking so many questions about your deck! But I'm curios why Buried Alive isn't in the deck?

And if you have the time can you explain the necrotic ooze line? I figured ooze required buried alive.

May 16, 2017 1:33 a.m.

(If there is a line with out first milling deck)

May 16, 2017 1:56 a.m.

No worries, feel free to ask away.

Buried Alive isn't in the deck because we don't actually have a line that immediately wins with Buried Alive and a Reanimation spell that doesn't give haste. The one we'd need for that would be Necrotic Ooze + Phyrexian Devourer + Walking Ballista, and the CMC of our deck is too low to support a Phyrexian Devourer kill.

The standard Necrotic Ooze line is:

  1. Get your whole library into your graveyard
  2. Flashback Dread Return, targeting Necrotic Ooze
  3. Use Wall of Roots' ability, putting a -0/-1 counter on Nooze to make G
  4. Use that G to pay for Blighted Bat's ability, giving Nooze haste
  5. Use a random Mana dork's ability to make one Mana and tap Nooze
  6. Use Devoted Druid's ability to put a -1/-1 counter on Nooze and untap it
  7. Use Channeler Initiate's ability, removing the -1/-1 counter to make one Mana of any colour
  8. Loop steps 6 and 7 to make infinite Mana of any colour
  9. Use Walking Ballista's ability to put infinite +1/+1 counters on Nooze
  10. Use Walking Ballista's other ability, removing +1/+1 counters to ping people.

Thank you for clearing it up! During playtesting I assumed necrotic ooze was a way to get infinite mana before the deck was milled to use Thrasios ability to draw and cast deck (ballista)!

Have you ever needed to used memory journey?! I'm assuming while a Rest In Peace affect is about to etb.

May 16, 2017 12:09 p.m.

Yes, all the time. Memory's Journey has been super useful as our lifeline after any sort of graveyard interaction from our opponents.

How can you remove the -1/-1 counter from necrotic ooze using Channeler Initiate's ability? It specifically states that it can only remove a counter from itself

If an activated ability of a card in a graveyard references the card its printed on by name, treat Necrotic Oozes version of that ability as though it referenced Necrotic Ooze by name instead. For example, if Cudgel Troll (which says : Regenerate Cudgel Troll) is in a graveyard, Necrotic Ooze has the ability : Regenerate Necrotic Ooze. From the comprehensive rules:

201.4b If an ability of an object refers to that object by name, and an object with a different name
gains that ability, all instances of the first name in the gained ability should be treated as the
second name.

I imagine there's no Dark Confidant/Sylvan Library because they're too slow?

July 8, 2017 3:15 p.m.

That's correct. Since this deck is running the two mana-wise cheapest combos in all of EDH, both Dark Confidant and Sylvan Library are too slow at providing card advantage.

July 9, 2017 10:02 a.m.

I had a sudden realization while playtesting this deck. if you need the Laboratory Maniac win, couldn't you get Cephalid Breakfast + Grand Abolisher + Hapless Researcher, mill over Narcomoeba to put it into play and sac Breakfast + Narco to flashback Dread Return on Lab Man? It allows you to lab man in complete safety.

July 20, 2017 1:21 a.m.

Correct! That's one of the lines this deck has available to it. There's also an unprotected win that uses your draw step, which is Flash + Hulk for Illusionist, Nomads, and Laboratory Maniac on your Upkeep.

Sigi, I know you are going to a primer for this deck after exams. I have given Dan some instructions should you choose to spend your Magic time in other ventures. I did have a question. Your Hermit Druid line use to involve Haunted Dead. Can I assume that you need one other creature in play in addition to Hermit Druid and Narcomoeba in order to flashback Dread Return? If so, I also assume that you did not have an issue with having that third creature thus eliminating the need for Haunted Dead.

August 5, 2017 10:22 p.m.

Hey Frank, Dan has told me about those instructions - the primer is still at the top of my list, despite the, uh, very "appealing" treatment that was promised if I were to slack off.

Haunted Dead (and later Bloodghast) were replaced by Fatestitcher, which means that we need one untapped, blue-producing Mana before going for Dread Return to Unearth it. Luckily, this doesn't add to our overall Mana cost for the Hermit Druid combo turn (G to activate Druid + 1U to Flashback Deep Analysis) since Fatestitcher untaps a Permanent on ETB. The reason why Haunted Dead is gone is because while it does save a slot, it costs an additional 1B for us to go off, which is too expensive and/or slow for this deck.

August 6, 2017 11:32 a.m.

Sigi, disregard that last question. I did not think about Bloodghast.

August 6, 2017 11:34 a.m.

Fatestitcher is not in the decklist. Is there another more up to date list posted somewhere else? Thanks for the info on the Labman line of play. I may get a Bazaar of Baghdad at Christmas if I can figure out this deck.

The Sigi "Rough Treatment Plan" was derived from a Coach Bob Knight quote.

As I like to say: "Go hard or go home". And yes, I made a testing branch for the noozeless version, which I'm currently updating over here: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/breakfast-hulk-without-nooze/
