Sideboard

The idea behind this deck is to take the pre-constructed Commander 2016 deck 'Breed Lethality' and upgrade the mana-base with 50$ worth of lands, and to upgrade the rest of the deck with another 50$ budget limit. This allows for a more budget- friendly version of the deck that still works within the original theme of the deck, which is centered around +1/+1 counters. The mana-base upgrades are in the mainboard, while the spell upgrades are in the sideboard. This is because the deck runs fairly well without the upgraded spells, while it suffers from an inconsistent mana base otherwise. I will have a list of cards to remove for the upgraded spells up soon.

Ajani Steadfast- This planeswalker seems like it was custom built for this deck. His +1 ability is pretty good for this deck, buffing one of your creatures each turn, but it's -2 is where it really shines. It gives all of your creatures a +1/+1 counter. Now, in other decks, this ability isn't incredibly strong, but since our general can add counters each end step to creatures that already have them, his -2 ability is very synergistic, and allows for our creatures to get insanely big. It also works well with the creatures who grant abilities to other creatures with +1/+1 counters. His ultimate ability is also very nice for this deck, as it offers you a lot of protection from damage.

Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit- This deck runs a fair number of creatures, and Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit capitalizes on this by pumping your weakest creature every time another creature enters the battlefield. This effect isn't amazingly powerful, but it synergizes well with the rest of the deck, and allows for weaker creatures who may not have a built-in way to get +1/+1 counters a way to do so.

Anguished Unmaking- Anguished Unmaking is aggressively-costed removal with a slight drawback. It allows for the exile of any non-land permanent in exchange for three mana and three life. It's removal, it's boring, but it wins games (More correctly, it stops opponents from winning games until you can, but it still works wonders).

Beast Within- Beast Within is more targeted removal (Noticing a theme here?). One of the issues with building a budget deck is the fact that, unless the other members of your playgroup also have similar budgetary restrictions as you, they can afford to play more powerful cards. Now, I feel that the best way to close the gap in power level that this creates is to run more removal, so that you can stop their most powerful cards from sticking around long enough to take over the game. Removal is almost always cheaper mana-wise and money-wise that the cards it will be used to respond to, so I feel that strong removal spells are extremely important to any budget decks.

Chromatic Lantern- Chromatic Lantern is amazing in any deck that isn't mono-colored, and the more colors you add to your deck, the more powerful the effect of its second ability. In a four-colored deck, especially one with a budget mana-base (relatively speaking), where many of the lands have some drawback when tapping them for certain types of mana may cause you damage, or give your opponents chump-blockers, it allows for all of your lands to essentially become City of Brass without the drawback. While paying land costs with life every once in a while won't kill you, the damage adds up over time, and any card that can negate this deserves a spot in this deck.

Contagion Engine- Contagion Engine is a true powerhouse in this deck. It can be simply used to proliferate the counters on your own permanents, and with the ETB effect, it allows for you to cripple one opponent very severely. The effect seems minimal at first, but the remember than your commander, along with other cards in your deck, has proliferate, making each one -1/-1 counter one step closer to wiping their board. Aside from that, this card has a very powerful proliferate effect, and will boost your army to insane heights!

Inexorable Tide- Coming Soon!

Gyre Sage- Coming Soon!

Kodama's Reach- Coming Soon!

Mikaeus the Lunarch- This is likely the most powerful card in the upgrade section. His function is similar to Ajani, but his flexible casting cost makes him arguably more powerful. He can also use his ability more often, as he only loses one counter each time he uses his tap ability. He can also use his other ability to gain back what he lost last turn, as opposed to Ajani, who requires two turns without proliferate effects. He is also cheaper than Ajani Steadfast, mana-wise and money-wise. If you can only afford one, Mikaeus is much better.

Prime Speaker Zegana- Coming Soon!

Swords to Plowshares- Swords to Plowshares is one of the most powerful removal spells in the history of Magic: The Gathering, and it is also affordably priced, both mana-wise and money-wise, so I have no complaints. Not really flashy, but a solid inclusion in any deck that can run it.
