I have been working on my mono-u devotion, but I found that there is a limit to what the current block enables mono-u to do. Fortunately, with a splash of green, this deck is infused with steroids in the form of Collected Company. Why is collected company so damn good?
Before we get into that card, I will first explain the pivotal mono-u combos.
Master of Waves
+
Shorecrasher Elemental
You can actually substitute shorecrasher elemental with any blue devotion, but these two cards work so well together. Master of waves gives shorecrasher +1/+1. Shorecrasher gives Master of waves 3 devotion. 3 devotion = 3 more 2/1 tokens!
Fated Infatuation
+
Master of Waves
One of my favorite combos in any mono-u deck. By running fated infatuation in our deck, we can put out a second, third, fourth master of waves for ONLY 3 mana! 3 MANA! The savings are amazing, the instant aspect of it is so good. Why don't more people run this card?
Bident of Thassa
+
Gudul Lurker
There are times when the draw is not with you. Having these two cards can pull you out of a slump! Unblockable creatures = draw power. plain and simple.
GREEN COMBOS!Become Immense
+
Gudul Lurker
Since when did a 1/1 unblockable one drop get so deadly? This unexpected combo can catch your opponent by surprise and make them regret NOT ultimate pricing your gudul lurker.
Collected Company
+
Shorecrasher Elemental
+
Thassa, God of the Sea
Collected company is a 4 drop w/ one green mana required to cast it. The thing about this beautiful card is that it is an INSTANT. Let's say your opponent decides to tap out for a win against a lonely gudul lurker. No matter! Drop a collected company, cast Shorecrasher Elemental
+
Thassa, God of the Sea
out of those 6 cards that you look at and turn the tides... literally. (Get it?)The fact of the matter is, Collected company gets out certain creatures DURING your opponents turn, which helps for UNEXPECTED combos!
Other cards of note:
Frost Walker
Against any deck, especially control, this card puts early game pressure as well as general pressure as well. "Do I use ultimate price on a frost walker now, or do I save it for a Master of Waves later?"
Anticipate
Why anticipate > Dig Through Time or Treasure Cruise?Speed. U-Devotion needs momentum in order to work. Of course, there are surprise Master of Waves turnarounds, but for the most part, YOU DO NOT want to go to turn 7 against an Esper control deck (Silumgar will wipe your entire board). Anticipate is also amazing because it can be used reactively because it is an instant.
Kiora's Follower
There are many times when you will be FORCED to drop
Shorecrasher Elemental
without a free mana for protection. This card allows you to safely cast
Shorecrasher Elemental
on turn 3 without too much worry about it being lightning struck to death.
Voyage's End
This card has a lot of utility. In fact, I like to run this card as well as
Mirror Mockery
because it works well when you have 1+ Master of Waves on the field.
Mirror Mockery
I'm not sure whether or not to side this card or mainboard it, but it is simply amazing. It either A) renders one of your opponents attackers useless through fear of self-destruction or B) Allows you amass a large number of elemental tokens should you enchant Master of Waves
Bident of Thassa
+
Fated Infatuation
+
Mirror Mockery
This is an extremely difficult combo to use, but there situations where it can work. Especially against an Esper or Abzan deck, this can prove to be a great combination. Force your opponent to attack via Bident of Thassa. This will cause
Mirror Mockery
to trigger, giving you a token that you can duplicate for yourself using Fated Infatuation.
Wall of Frost
Against a fast mono red, this deck may or may not be able to keep up depending on your draw. Wall of frost acts as a nice wall to keep you alive while you amass the creatures on your board + it gives plenty of devotion for Master of Waves
Hall of Triumph
Esper control can annihilate your entire field via Silumgar, the Drifting Death's -1/-1 effect. This card prevents the death of your tokens + gives you a +1/+1 bonus.
