Maybeboard

The objective of this deck is encourage opponents to attack each other while we slow the game down with asymmetric stax pieces and threaten combat damage. There are two sub-themes to the deck, Discard and Vigilance.

I have a soft spot for discard and used it to win many Vintage tournaments back in the 90s, but it can work against us if we are facing a graveyard recursion deck. Our gravehate stax pieces are carefully chosen to disrupt our opponents access to their GY while still letting Liesa, Forgotten Archangel and Kaya the Inexorable do their thing. Oona's Blackguard when combined with Breena's +1/+1 counters functions as a low CMC Larceny. Delirium Skeins can strip our opponent's handsize cheaply, forcing them to attack each other to gain cards back or slowing them down significantly if it resolves before they build a board presence with creatures to generate attack triggers. Dreamstealer and Needle Specter are Mind Twist on a stick with Breena's buffs. Painful Quandary, Liliana of the Veil, and Oppression can also help put our opponents in top deck mode. With our opponents' hand size cut down and life totals pressured, a mid-game Torment of Hailfire is even more effective.

Instead of running Ghostly Prison type effects, I have opted to run Reconnaissance, Brave the Sands, and Angelic Field Marshal to give the whole team vigilance, further discouraging anyone from attacking me. This also provides great cover for planeswalkers to threaten the clock and build value, so I am contemplating adding more to the mix if I can consistantly stick one of the vigilance cards on the field. Additionally, I am looking for other payoffs to not having to untap creatures like Static Orb, though it may not be necessary.

The list features a lot of cards that help keep Breena and her hatebears alive, through both targeted removal and board wipes. Felisa, Fang of Silverquill is an excellent deterrent as well, as we can usually swing for lethal on our next turn after a board wipe. She also forms a nasty combo with The Ozolith.

The hatebear list is also carefully chosen to not rely on ETB triggers, which makes our many Torpor Orb effects purely one-sided.

A strong ramp and tutor package rounds out the list to provide speed and consistency to the build.
