Breya, Etherium Shaper - EDH Non-Combo Artifacts Matter

This deck tries to gain an advantage from artifact-based synergies and win through various different ways. It also includes an aristocrat/graveyard subtheme (sacking and recuring artifacts). However, I tried to not include any infinite combos. The deck has shown to be very versatile - even though my opponents tutor for mass artifact destruction every time I play this deck - and has many options to assemble and recur the key pieces we need to win.

Thankful for any recommendations.

My playgroup:

  • All decks in our playgroup can be classified as focused, according to the Command Zone Guide, which defines this category as "powerful card interaction, but few or no infinite/game-ending combos." While combos like this are not outright banned, none of us builds his decks with these combos as a focus. Although some times these things are inevitable. This means that this built of Breya, Etherium Shaper does not focus on combos, but as I said sometimes an infinite loop happens, especially in an artifact deck. Sadly, my playgroup also banned mass land destruction, that is way you wont find cards like Armageddon in this deck. In addition, cards like Hellkite Tyrant which state "if [...], you win the game" are also not allowed in our group.

Some explanations

  • Breya, Etherium Shaper offers a lot of versatility. On ETB she makes two blue 1/1 flying Thopter tokens, so she comes with her own sacrifice fodder. She is a sac outlet and brings three different abilities to the table.
  • Since I am trying to avoid infinite combos, her first ability is mostly used to get rid of planeswalkers or to get rid of a player who is already low on life.
  • Her second ability can kill around half the commanders in my playgroup with just one activation. In addition, this ability can be quite useful to kill smaller creatures. With enough tokens and mana, she can even shoot down bigger ones. Her -4/-4 ability also gets around indestructible.
  • Her last ability (to gain four life) can be useful when someone wraths the board, at least we get some life out of it.
  • Esper Sentinel like a Mystic Remora on a stick. It works very well with Cranial Plating.
  • Sensei's Divining Top is one of the best artifacts in the format - especially if you have fetch lands.
  • Skullclamp is a very strong in an artifact deck that can make 1/1 tokens very easily.
  • Baleful Strix is creature that can do a lot of work. On ETB it lets us draw a card, it can block dangerous flyers and even get rid of them with deathtouch. It is also an artifact and that can come in handy.
  • Ichor Wellspring draws us a card on ETB and then just sits there and waits to be sacrificed to Breya, Etherium Shaper or the many other cards that feed on artifacts. In addition, it lets us draw another card when it goes to the graveyard.
  • Emry, Lurker of the Loch puts four cards from the top of our library into our graveyard. Since she offers recursion this can be considered card advantage.
  • Mighty Servant of Leuk-o's restriction that it has to be crewed by exactly two creatures is easily met by Breya, Etherium Shaper. Therefore, having a 6/6 with trample and ward that lets us draw 2 cards when it connects on turn 4 is highly likely.
  • Daretti, Scrap Savant's first ability is a repeatable Faithless Looting. The two discarded cards are fodder for his second ability. Not exactly card advantage, he nevertheless offers filtering.
  • Combustible Gearhulk either lets us draw three cards or has the possibility to hurt one of our opponents. At worst it fills our yard with artifacts we can later recur or gets some lands out of the way. It also is a nice beater.
  • Thought Monitor is a more expensive Mulldrifter. However, it is also an artifact and it can most times be cast for very cheap. With just Breya, Etherium Shaper and her two Thopters out it costs only - making it cheaper than the blue Elemental mentioned before.
  • Sword of Hearth and Home offers protection from both white and green. It ramps us and it flickers. Just a powerhouse in a deck with many ETB creatures.
  • Master Transmuter can cheat big artifacts into play, protect our artifacts from removal and even let us bounce them back to our hand to play them again to get another ETB trigger out of them.
  • Tezzeret the Seeker has a variety of abilities: He can ramp, tutor and can even win us the game with his ultimate, by making all our artifacts into 5/5 creatures.
  • Bolas's Citadel can just end games, especially in conjunction with Sensei's Divining Top.
  • Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge is probably the golden pick in this deck. He can can do almost everything: recursion, ramp and he can even win us the game.
  • Lotus Petal it is always nice to have one mana of any color extra. Since it costs , we can use it very easily as sacrifice fodder for cards like Goblin Welder.
  • Sol Ring this does not need an explanation, especially in an artifact centered deck.
  • Wayfarer's Bauble is a poor man's rampant growth. However, with all the recursion in the deck it can often be used multiple times.
  • Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone and the other mana value two mana rocks, like Talisman of Progress can not only ramp us and fix colors, they can also be sacked later on.
  • Etherium Sculptor reduces all of our artifacts' cost by .
  • Crucible of Worlds is great value with all the discard in this deck. In addition, it lets us replay fetch lands (there will be more included soon). It also works great with Urza's Saga.
  • Chromatic Lantern although a 3CMC mana rock is a little expensive, it has the added benefit of fixing our mana. Which is quite useful in a four color deck.
  • Sword of Hearth and Home lets us put a basic land into play each time it connects.
  • Smothering Tithe is probably the best non-green ramp in EDH. It can also be considered a tax pice since it can deny our opponents resources if they want to prevent us from creating Treasure tokens.
  • Solemn Simulacrum sad robot is just good in any artifact deck. In addition, land ramp is always useful.
  • Tezzeret the Seeker his first ability allows us two untap two artifacts: artifact land or mana rocks. He can also bring an artifact land or a mana rock like Sol Ring directly into play.
  • Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge's static ability gives all our creatures and planeswalkers affinity for artifacts.
  • Academy Ruins is the artifact version of Volrath's Stronghold.
  • Goblin Welder can 'exchange' one of our artifacts on the field for one in our graveyard. So what about sacrificing one of our tokens for a card like Darksteel Forge? This Goblin can also be used offensively. We can force an opponent to sacrifice one of their artifacts on the battlefield for one in their graveyard.
  • Goblin Engineer by sacrificing an artifact, and paying , we can put an artifact with mana value three or lower from our graveyard directly into play.
  • Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast's ultimate is not so much recursion, but it makes three copies of a artifact in any (!) graveyard on the battlefield. Who does not like three Myr Battlesphere?
  • Emry, Lurker of the Loch lets us cast artifacts from our graveyard.
  • Daretti, Scrap Savant's second ability allows us to sacrifice an artifact, a blue Thopter for example, to an artifact from our graveyard directly into play. So we can potentially offer up a token and get a Myr Battlesphere or even a Darksteel Forge in exchange. What a deal! About his ultimate, we do not even have to talk about. If we reach it it is probably over for our opponents.
  • Scrap Mastery is a Living Death for artifacts.
  • Open the Vaults since all our wincons are either artifacts or enchantments, this card will benefit is much more than our opponents.
  • Sharuum the Hegemon on ETB can get back any artifact from our graveyard directly to the battlefield. In addition it is a nice flying beater.
  • Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge's -3 ability returns an artifact from our graveyard to hand.
  • Aether Spellbomb can be used to bounce one of our opponents' creatures or to save one of our own. It can also be sacked to draw a card.
  • Dispatch most of the times it is a better Swords to Plowshares.
  • Dispeller's Capsule is a more expensive Disenchant. However, it can be easily tutored and recured, as it is an artifact.
  • Executioner's Capsule is a worse Doom Blade. For the reason why it was included nonetheless, see the entry for Dispeller's Capsule.
  • Nihil Spellbomb can just sit on the battlefield until it is needed. On the way out we also have the option to pay to draw a card.
  • Swords to Plowshares probably the best single target creature removal in the format.
  • Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast can remove a artifact or creature with its -1 by sacrificing an artifact - something we normally have in abundance. If not, he makes artifact tokens himself.
  • Nevinyrral's Disk is a slower form of mass removal since it comes into play tapped. The fact that it also destroys artifacts can work in our favour. With Darksteel Forge in play we can just destroy our opponents' board each turn.
  • Scourglass is a slow but mostly one-sided board wipe that can be easily recured and tutored for.
  • Spine of Ish Sah is an expensive egg that gets rid of a permanent on ETB. If we sac it with Breya, Etherium Shaper's ability it goes back to our hand.
  • Organic Extinction is mostly a one-sided board wipe that can sometimes be cast for just .
  • Urza's Saga with the second lore counter it can make a 0/0 colorless Construct artifact creature token that gets bigger the more artifacts we have in play. It can be a nice beater or just sacked to one of the many effects in the deck.
  • Hangarback Walker can be played at almost any point of the game and still be relevant. If we play it for it is a 1/1 that can slowly build up or we slam it down for and directly sac it to our commander and then appreciate all the nice flying tokens we got from it.
  • Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast's +1 makes 1/1 colorless Construct artifact creature token that can either be used defensively or to be sacrificed to one of the many artifact hungry effects in this deck.
  • Smothering Tithe not only ramps but the treasures can also be used to feed Breya, Etherium Shaper's abilities or can be sacked to other spells.
  • Wurmcoil Engine is just nasty. It is a nice beater wiht deathtouch and lifelink, that also offers us three artifacts in total as fodder for our many sacrifice outlets; very nice if we can get it back from our graveyard.
  • Myr Battlesphere comes into play with four little Myr friends. Mana value seven is a lot, but this ball of death offers a lot for its hefty price. It either provides sacrifice fodder or can kill a planeswalker or even a player on attack trigger.
  • Inventors' Fair is a Wastes that we can sack for and then search for an artifact. In addition, it also can give us some life.
  • Urza's Saga when the third lore counter is added, it lets us tutor for an artifact with mana value or . So this can either get us Sol Ring, or one of the many utility artifacts like Skullclamp or Nihil Spellbomb.
  • Goblin Engineer on ETB can tutor an artifact card directly into our graveyard, so an Entomb for artifacts. Then, for , an artifact with mana value three or lower can be put from our graveyard directly into play. This Goblin can therefore aim for a wide range of cards. If we have other means of recursion in play this card can tutor for cards that cost more.
  • Oswald Fiddlebender is a Birthing Pod for artifacts.
  • Wishclaw Talisman is in most decks a worse Demonic Tutor. This because your opponents will also get to tutor for something and it costs more. Nevertheless, in this deck it can be almost as strong or even more than the aforementioned staple. First of all it is an artifact and a lot of cards in this deck care about this. In addition, after its activation we can just sac the talisman to Breya, Etherium Shaper ability or to one of the other sacrifice outlets in the deck thereby negating its biggest draw back. As an artifact it can also be easily recured. It also works very well with Scrap Mastery. We can search for it and then our opponent has to sacrifice it.
  • Arcum Dagsson can sack a Thopter token and put a noncreature artifact like Darksteel Forge directly onto the battlefield.
  • Kuldotha Forgemaster can tutor any artifact from our library directly to the battlefield, for the low cost of three artifacts. Conveniently our commander brings exactly three artifacts with her. If we can do this twice the game is over most times: Turn one get Darksteel Forge, turn two get Nevinyrral's Disk, then if your opponents do not concede right then and there, we get something like a Myr Battlesphere.
  • Ethersworn Canonist can come down early and significantly slows down our opponents. As an artifact deck we are not really hindered by the limit of one nonartifact spell per turn. So it is like a one sided Eidolon of Rhetoric.
  • Cranial Plating is very strong in a deck with so many artifacts in it. With it one of Breya, Etherium Shaper's Thopters suddenly becomes a threat.
  • Mirage Mirror can be almost anything we want it to be. Can be very useful for copying an opponent's commander and profiting of their abilities.
  • Phyrexian Metamorph can be an extra copy of the strongest artifact or creature on the board. For the small price of . It just offers a lot of flexibility, as it can copy a mana rock or a big threat, so whatever we need at the moment.
