Maybeboard


This started as an EDH version of my Tezzeret, Thopter Foundry deck. The idea was to take one of the thopter loops in that deck and bring it into the EDH format. So I started with Breya, Etherium Shaperfoil who is probably the best commander for any thopter-based deck. It has a lot of the staples of a standard Breya deck, however, it should have a bit more interaction than a basic EDH deck. It also prioritizes creating Thopter 1/1 C tokens over any of the other tokens normally used as the sac outlet for Breya.

The main idea of this deck is to make as many thopters/tokens as possible and then use Breya to do stuff with them. However there are also a bunch of loops in this deck. Two are basically instant wins and the other just makes it difficult to lose.

This loop comes straight from the Tezzeret Thopter Foundry deck that this is based on. It involves Urza, Lord High Artificerfoil+Thopter Foundry+Sword of the Meek. You have to get all three out on the battlefield but it doesn't matter in what order. Because of Urza's ability to tap any artifact for you can tap Sword of the Meek for one mana, then use that mana and sacrifice it to activate Thopter Foundry's ability and create a thopter and gain a life. Because a 1/1 creature came onto the battlefield you can return Sword of the Meek from your graveyard to the battlefield attached to the thopter. You can then tap Sword of the Meek again to create again, sacrifice it, and start the loop over. You can do this an infinite amount of times to gain as much life as you want and create as many thopters as you want. If the construct created by Urza's etb ability is still on the battlefield it will also be huge. Since these abilities work at instant speed, you can start the loop either during or at the end of your opponent's turn to make sure you can swing in for lethal during your turn. Ashnod's Altar is an alternative to Urza and is necessary for a bunch of the other loops in this deck. With Ashnod's Altar, instead of tapping Sword of the Meek, you sacrifice one of the thopters for the necessary mana.

This can win through multiple ways. First, obviously, is from the combat damage from the infinite thopters. Next are a couple of direct damage sources. These can be Marionette Apprentice from all the sacrificing, Reckless Fireweaver from all the etb, or Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge from his +2 ability. Another is by using the thopters to make infinite mana with Ashnod's Altar or Urza and sac'ing them to use Breya's "deal 3 damage to target opponent" ability.

This is similar to the previous loop but it uses Breya's etb ability to create infinite thopters. To achieve this you need Breya, Ashnod's Altar, and Nim Deathmantle. First, make two mana. This can be done any way you choose. Then, use Ashnod's Altar to sacrifice Breya to create two more mana. Now use the four mana created to activate Nim Deathmantle to attach it to Breya and return her to the battlefield. This will make the two thopters from Breya's etb. Then sacrifice one of those thopters and Breya to start the loop again. This will make infinite thopters which can make infinite mana and then use Breya's deal three damage to target opponent ability to win the game. You also don't have to use this loop with Breya. This will work with pretty much any creature that has an etb ability.

This last loop isn't necessarily an instant win, but it is an infinite turns loop and you should be able to use those turns to get one of the other loops or another win condition of some sort. It uses Time Sieve and any means of creating five artifacts. There are a ton of ways to do this. Sharding Sphinx is one way to do this pretty easily. However, a consistent way is to chain Myr Battlesphere with Emry, Lurker of the Loch. Sacrifice Myr Battlefield as one of the five artifacts to Time Sieve. Then next turn, use Emry to cast Myr Battlesphere from your graveyard which will make four myr tokens. So including Battlesphere, that makes the five that you need to sacrifice to Time Sieve. So you can chain this for infinite turns. That should cause your opponents to concede but if they make you play it out you can use the infinite turns to find something to win legitimately.

If all else fails there are a ton of ways to make tokens to either attack with or sac to Breya. So there should be enough ways to find to beat your opponents.

There are two ways to try to play this deck. First is just a token producer. Make as many tokens as possible and do fun stuff with them. Killing your own creatures/artifacts isn't the worst thing in the world since there are a bunch of recursion cards like Emry or Open the Vaults.

The second way to play is as a combo deck. Try to control the board with counters or removal spells as well as Breya's "give target creature -4/-4" ability (which bypasses indestructible by the way) until you can get your combo pieces out there and win instantly. There are a bunch of artifact tutors like Fabricate or Whir of Invention to get your combo pieces out there.

The major advantages of this deck are the token production and combo potential. The combos aren't super difficult to pull off and are extremely powerful. You should also be able to make a lot of tokens to do fun stuff with. In that regard, this deck has a lot of versatility.

The disadvantages however, go in tandem with the advantages. If you can't get your token production going and if you can't get your combos out there, this deck has the potential to fizzle. Also Breya is known to be a combo deck so opponents will probably target Breya pretty hard which could make things rough.

As I was playing this deck I noticed I was actually getting my combos pretty easily. It was making games super fast and I was winning a lot. However, I found this less fun so I took out some combo cards in favor of some token production. The cards I took out are: Eldrazi Displacer, Krark-Clan Ironworks, and Kuldotha Forgemaster. I also took out a bunch of tutors. If you want this deck to be more powerful I would recommend putting them back in. But that is personal preference.

So I have made a couple of thopter art pieces. These are to accompany my many thopter decks because I'm extra like that. This first piece is a thopter-based card sleeve design. It's based on the diagram art like in Ornithopter. If anyone wants to use it for anything you're more than welcome to. It could also probably work as a custom token if you want. If anyone is interested in using this as a token let me know and I can add "Thopter" to the top and "Flying" and "1/1" at the bottom.

I also made a 3D model of this thopter design. I used it to glue to a deck box but it can be used as a token or just to have a thopter buddy chilling. Or whatever really.
