Just as a recommendation, because I play a dredgevine deck: The Moor, A Vengeful Swamp, I would recommend running Rest in Peace. Cheaper cmc graveyard lockdown, or even better Grafdigger's Cage.

+1 for Stoneblade in Modern.

I have a question though - what made you decide on your equipment choices? Sword of Body and Mind doesn't have the most powerful effects; Sword of Feast and Famine has usually been the favorite in control decks.

smithereen: it was originally in the deck, but I'm a great fan of mill and I usually want more and more tokens in play. And since my n1 win condition is Mirran Crusader, I prefer give it a different protection than it already has. But I'll reconsider this sword, and Sword of War and Peace too. :)

Mogis_Mtg Rest in Peace is really interesting. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I've given this deck a bit more thought and I think your sideboard needs tuning. You are running white, so you have access to the best sideboard cards in Magic!

Your Affinity matchup looks shaky. Stony Silence (you should be taking out your swords anyways) and Supreme Verdict would go a long way towards shoring it up. Rest in Peace is a lot better than Leyline of the Void most of the time. Against combo, you will probably want all four Leylines, since with your countermagic resolving one is pretty much a win. Drown in Sorrow is medium against Affinity but not great against Zoo, so I would think about switching to Verdict. Finally, a resolved Liliana could be a problem so I would probably try to cram in a Celestial Purge too, which doubles as an emergency combobreaker against Twin.

Speaking of Twin, you should probably shore up your maindeck game against that deck, since it is a big part of the metagame right now and since you are so good against Junk already. You will win most of your Twin games by Thoughtseize -> Bitterblossom, then holding countermagic and removal, so I'd try to get to six discard spells and three Blossoms. I'd start by cutting the Delvers, since they are so much worse in long games (which is what you want to play anyways.)

smithereen: Best. Suggestions. Ever. Simply.

This is exactly what I've felt while playtesting the deck this last days (since I've just discovered Untap), and these adjustments are going to be done. But the main problem I face is if Kataki, War's Wage shouldn't be that much of an hassle, Stony Silence is going to rip me from my best tools...

Against Twin I've lost only one game (and winning the other two) with my main deck, but I do not think that it was only due to the power of my deck. It definitively lacks more hand disruption, the best way of control the black mana can provide. About Thoughtseize and Blitterblossom?, if I want more of those then I'll have to find more ways to gain life than just Timely Reinforcements and Batterskull: aggro decks are trully a hastle to play against. For exemple, I faced a pentacolor aggro deck that costed something like $10 and lost miserably, every time by the fourth turn...

About Stony Silence - You need to board out your Swords against Affinity - not only are they too slow, they don't even do much since most of Affinity's cards are colorless. I mean, if you don't see much affinity then you don't need Stony, but if there is Affinity in your meta you just need to try that card out and see how hard it shuts them down. You have enough ways to kill them once all their cards doo nothing, you don't need your equipment too.

Kataki is another option but I don't really see it being better - it doesn't really let you keep in your swords (and makes Batterskull slightly worse) and it dies to Galvanic Blast even without metalcraft.

I just played a few games online with my take on the deck - I won 2-1 vs RWU (I reallyshould have lost though, my opponent had me stone dead tapped out but forgot she could get red mana for the lethal Bolt with Ghost Quarter game three,) lost to Dimir mill combo 0-2 and beat Twin 2-1. I was running 23 lands (with three Flooded Strand,) +1 Geist, +1 Inquisition, +1 Thoughtseize +2 Bitterblossom, -1 Silence, -1 Telepathy, -1 Raise the Alarm, -1 Intangible Virtue, -2 Delver mainboard and a completely different sideboard (didn't stop me from boarding wrong every game though.)

I did notice that the life loss was pretty real and that could make game 1 vs aggro a pain. What was the deck you were having trouble with? Tribal Zoo? Running more fetches and fewer shocks could help by a few percentage points, switching out Geth's Verdict for something that doesn't cost double black could help if you don't see a lot of Geist of Saint Traft or Thrun, the Last Troll. If the deck is X-1s than Zealous Persecution is very good. More Timely Reinforcements and some Supreme Verdict it the sideboard would go a long way.

Thank you very much for the playtest! The deck I faced has its list just here. Sort of Zoo, weaker early but stronger after. Once again, some boardwipe would have been helful.

Against affinity, I'm going to try Hurkyl's Recall. Instant speed is great, and it's able to buy the deck 2-3 turns to take control of the board. I think I'll go with Stony Silence, too: I've realised how many threats it took out (Cranial Plating, Mox Opal duh).

While playtesting, did you also suffer of the lack of card draw of the deck?

I never felt out of gas - but it was only three matches. I played a fourth last night and crushed Bloom Titan 2-0. (That matchup felt unlosable, with the opponent needing to resolve six-mana spells through countermagic to win, but I got the sense my opponent was new to the deck.)

Of the card draw available, Sphinx's Revelation is a great topdeck against fair decks but probably too slow and Dark Confidant is fast and a body for equipment but will probably kill you. Phyrexian Arena is pretty slow and also painful but might be worth testing out. We're already running Esper Charm, but you could try going up to 3-4 or adding some Think Twice, which performs a similar role.

I would replace geths verdict with devour flesh in case you need a quick use and don't have double swamp.

I took a four-Bitterblossom 8-Thoughtseize version to a Modern Monday event at my LGS, and I have a few more thoughts. I went 2-2, but definitely punted hard in the matches I lost. I beat Junk 2-0 easily, Sultai Delver 2-1, lost to Storm 2-1, and lost to Infect 2-1.

  1. 2 Intangible Virtue in the main feels correct. I played with 1, but I always wanted to draw it game 1.

  2. I lost G3 to Storm primarily to damage from my Bitterblossoms. I sided in nine cards, had double Leyline of Sanctity in play T1, but could not finish the deal as my opponent Grapeshotted away my fliers and won with Empty the Warrens for 4 goblins and Echoing Truth on my board.

  3. I won mulliganing to four twice. Geist of Saint Traft and Bitterblossom can win the game on their own. Two Geists and four Blossoms seem like the right mainboard numbers.

  4. I started with three Crusaders and a Grave Titan sideboard, and boarded them in anytime I needed threat density or against GB decks (where I took out my tolken enchantments.) This strategy felt very strong, as my opponents boarded out all of their Path to Exiles and brought in tolken hate like Echoing Truth and Engineered Explosives. Mirran Crusader + Sword of Fire and Ice = a beating.

  5. Infect felt rough. I won G1 thanks to Intangible Virtue, and I could have won G2 had I not punted on thinking Inkmoth Nexus was black, but I had very favourable draws.

  6. I replaced Mystical Teachings with Sphinx's Revelation and I'm pretty sure that is correct. We don't really have any silver bullet instants, so drawing threats with Rev is probably better than tutoring up a Snapcaster for value or spending six mana to counter something. Also, the life gain helps a LOT.

  7. I think a mix of Despise and Duress could be better than maxing out on Thoughtseize, and Zealous Persecution would help vs Infect. (I see you agree!)

The story of saint traft made me really sad ): I'm never going to use Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip again. Still, I love this deck! I am honoring saint tract by removing elbrus from my deck.

WOO 103RD UPVOTE... YA... How did I miss this deck at some point? Lol

Seriously though, this looks hilariously fun. And coming from a Johnny who hates Modern with a passion (don't ask why I clicked on this deck), you've piqued my interest. Of course, $680 to me is like being the president, so I won't be making this any time soon, but I am running an Esper Commander deck, and this has given me a lot of help. +1 for the fun description (I happen to be a master at writing them ;D) and for intriguing a heavy Standard player!

WOO, 103RD UPVOTE... YA... How did I not see this deck earlier? Lol

Seriously though, this is super cool. Coming from a Johnny who absolutely despises Modern with a passion (don't ask why I clicked on this deck in the first place), you have piqued my interest. Since this is over $680, there;s no way in the high heavenly hells I would be able to make this ever, but I AM running an Esper commander deck, and this has given me quite a few ideas. So thanks for that! And congrats for the popularity you have received from this, mine don't get a lot of credit (I wonder why).

+1 for cool deck and for a super awesome description (I'm a master at them, and this has proven itself worthy :D)!

Runlue ahah, thank you! Yeah, it's going to be a pain for my wallet. I will buy every single cards of its final version to play it at the MKM Official Series in Paris by the next year. But the playtests with the most Advanced version of it (not yet visible on T/O) are running so smoothly that I think that this deck might have a chance to enter the top-32! But there are two extensions that are going change the meta again before this date. Let's wait for it and see!

By the way, what do you guys think about Myth Realized? I'll finish Monastery Mentor playtests this week (seriously, this guy is friddgin' powerful), and then I'm going to try it.

Myth Realized is amazing, but mostly when exploited. It would go well in a deck that casts around 3 non creatures each turn, but probably not here.

Also, your deck is #1! Good job!

The story about saint graft made me sad ):

In tribute, I'm removing Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip from all my decks. Also, I'm +1ing this deck in the hope that somehow they bring him back to life (and because it's a good deck).
