I'm learning to play control, so here's my paper form of the deck I use at FNMs:

  • Land base: If/when I ever acquire the full set of fetch lands such as Poluted Delta I'll be throwing them in as quickly as I can.

  • THE MAYBEBOARD is either (a) cards I want, or (b) cards I keep close in mind for whatever reason.

Three control decks at FNM, raking in just two wins combined all night... just a horrible night for control. Personally, I just couldn't get what I needed when I needed it, all night long.

  • R1: Draw vs. Grixis control, but by all other rights should've been a loss.

  • R2: Loss vs. Mardu Warriors. A matchup I easily had secured, until not even a Dig Through Time could produce the Bile Blight I needed.

  • R3: Loss vs. U/W Heroic. We lose to this matchup all the time, there's just nothing control decks have against them, except for Vaults, maybe a couple hopeful Negates, and Ashiok, none of which proved enough to win.

  • R4: Loss vs. Mardu. This was the first Mardu deck I've seen play a Whip of Erebos, and it proved to be the difference-maker in their second game for the win, so it caught me by surprise when I'd already used my Negates.

ANALYSIS: 3/4 opponents were aggro, meaning I would either have to either play more Drown in Sorrow and/or swap out my slow PLA for a Sphinx in the Main. I'd LOVE to know your thoughts?!
