Budget Gruul Burn is, first and foremost, a casual and budget friendly deck. You won't find any shock lands or cards that cost over $2.50. Secondly, it is a Gruul deck somewhere in between aggro and midrange that banks on strong bloodrush plays by trampling through or creature destruction.
Three keywords define this deck: Bloodrush, Hexproof, Trample. The goal is to deal big damage through bloodrush and trample on early creatures and with
Primal Huntbeast
, a hexproof creature. The "burn" part of the deck will use creature destruction to create a direct path to attack.
Early Game Analysis: There are no Turn 1 drops. As a result, Burning-Tree Emissary is used to catch up and drop Skarrg Guildmage,
Flinthoof Boar
, or
Searing Spear
if necessary on Turn 2. Skarrg Guildmage sets us up for Trample when larger creatures come out while Flinthoof Boar is our early game frontline attacker. Skarrg Guildmage also helps us in the absence of creatures to bring out a 4/4 elemental when necessary.
Turn 4 Onward: To combat cheap removal,
Primal Huntbeast
is the primary late-game target for bloodrush, making him much harder to destroy and block. We want to combo Skarrg Guildmage's Trample ability (or
Rancor
's) with Wrecking Ogre's Bloodrush for devastating blows. Ruric Thar, the Unbowed will certainly finish the game if we can get him out early enough.
Sorcery/Instants: Wildwood Rebirth returns to us Ghor-Clan Rampager, Slaughterhorn, or Wrecking Ogre for more bloodrush plays and creatures when we need them.
Searing Spear
and Ground Assault will allow us to get past chump blockers and troublesome creatures.
Maybeboard: If money weren't an issue: you could replace
Gruul Guildgate
and any number of lands for
Stomping Ground
and Rootbound Crag. If you are playing against another creature-heavy deck that isn't heavy with flying creatures, Wasteland Viper might be a nice addition.
