You need Thoughtseize for Tokens to work, Shrine is more of a sideboard card. Would add another anthem and Path.

This is a budget deck. I do realize Thoughtseize is better than Duress . But Duress is a good option if you don't have the money to pay for 3-4 Thoughtseize . The Shrine is something i'm playtesting with. I do agree that if i were to remove the shrine, another Path to Exile and anthem would be the right choices for the slots.

I really like the deck but I noticed when play testing that most of the time i ended up taking 6-7 life just from your lands. I'm not sure if this is a big deal to you but I feel that you might consider switching Caves of Koilos with Temple of Silence . Just my thoughts hope this helps.

Temple of Silence is terrible in modern. It's just too slow in a format that runs turn 4 combo decks.

Gather the Townsfolk or Timely Reinforcements ? Maybe try making a sideboard, I'd suggest Torpor Orb , Kataki, War's Wage , Aven Mindcensor , Pithing Needle and Grafdigger's Cage . Looks solid.

@chocolate101 so this is really meant to be a representation of a direction a new player can take the modern event deck with out spending much more money. In my description I state a few cards people could add to the deck if they had more money to spend. One of those being Godless Shrine .

@ HydraOoze, I own the deck in paper and i don't seem to really take that much damage from lands. With extra money the lands are one of the first things i would work on though.

@OpenFire, Gather the Townsfolk and Raise the Alarm are both very competitive for the same slot. For this deck i think Raise the Alarm wins because it is an instant, and it's already included in the event deck. I do like your suggestions for the sideboard though.

Thanks for all the comments everyone!

that's not budget..

Using the event deck it can be built for under 130. I'd consider that budget for modern.

Shrine of Loyal Legions isn't very good I would replace it with 1x Path to Exile and 1x Inquisition of Kozilek -(duress if budget is an issue). Hope this helps

At first I thought it was lack luster too, but the more I play with it the more I like it. Multiple times I've got it up to 9 counters. It is one of the first cards sideboarded out though.

Any thoughts on Bitterblossom as a token generator? I think it could give your deck some more consistency. Also, why Doom Blade when you could have Terminate?

kintighd says... #14

I never really thought of terminate, thanks for the suggestion! Bittterblossom, however, is a little out of my price range. If I could put it it I think it'd be a good replacement for Faithless Looting. Thanks for the comment!

What are your thoughts on Butcher of the Horde over Aristocrat, he seems more flexible and less vulnerable to removal. Also with Faithless Looting I feel like since you hand will often have only 1-2 cards in hand topdecking will just cycle your hand. I think Night's Whisper is a better choice if you want to have better draws.

I've been looking for a good Mardu Modern brew. I really like this deck. I want to do Mardu because Crackling Doom would be evil against a Bogles deck. Mardu has great utility against a lot of the top decks right now, but Crackling Doom seems like it was made specifically for the Bogles match up. Have you considerd putting one or two in the sideboard? Or even Mainboard? Also, you have so many 1CMC Sorceries and Instants, I wonder of Soulfire Grand Master might be a possibility as well? Terminate for six to cast and put back in your hand? Lightning bolt for 5 to cast, gain 3 life, and save again for next turn? Just a suggestion. I would love to see how these new cards impact modern.

Thanks for the comments guys, I really appreciate it. Butcher of the horde was in the original list. Because you have to pay for haste though he felt like he wasn't making much of an impact on the board. I originally wanted to run nights whisper as well, but I was afraid I'd be spending too much.life on my lands and draws. After playing in a tournament though, I realized that I wasn't actually spending too much life, so ill be making the switch to nights whisper here soon.

So I feel like this deck already has a good matchup against bogles, I packed a lot of enchantment removal in the new sideboard (it'll be up soon), and with all the discard spells I run they will have trouble having an effective hand. Also grandmaster is cool, but i feel like his ability is just slightly overcosted to be really effective in this deck.

Btw, if you are interested in this deck it can be built fairly cheaply using the modern event deck as a starter.

Thanks again guys, remember to plus 1 if you like the deck.

What is your reasoning on 2 of each discard? Wouldn't 4 Thoughtseize or 4 IoK and 2 of the other one be better and Duress in the sideboard?

April 12, 2015 11:39 a.m.

kintighd says... #19

right now it's a multitude of reasons. First I only own two of thoughseize and iok. So I worked with what I had. But also the split works well in my local meta which leans heavy splintertwin and scapeshift.

It's seems to be working fine for me right now, but If I start to whiff on duresses often, I thinking switching to 4 thoughtseizes and 2 IOK would be the right thing for me to do. Thanks for the comment!

Why use Falkenrath Aristocrat instead of Butcher of the Horde or any other dragon? You could even use Restoration Angel. Good deck mate, I'll keep following for more results :)
I'd like to know how you got to win vs Scapeshift, as I've never played against it with my currect Mardu Build

April 12, 2015 11:48 a.m.

kintighd says... #21

I like falkenrath over the butcher for two reasons. The first being it doesn't rely on other creatures to make an immediate impact the turn it hits the board. And being able to grant it indestructible is huge. It protects it from pretty much all removal except for Path to Exile. I've tried butcher out and I really didn't like it much, it felt lack luster at times.

I think the key to beating scapeshift is aggressively attacking their hand. Also Slaughter Games works real well in the matchup if you can survive to cast it. Thanks for the comment!

Dope deck. I like the 2-2-2 discard setup and honestly if your facing Scapeshift on a regular basis then Duress is better than Inquisition of Kozilek.

I don't think this deck really needs a sword but if you're set on one Sword of Fire and Ice is the best.

April 13, 2015 12:39 a.m.

kintighd says... #24

Ive never been really sold on the swords. Ive put them in the maybe board, because they show up in bw token decks at times, which this deck takes some inspiration from. I dont think any of them lend themselves to what this deck wants to do.

I do like the swords and i have a really sweet altered sword of light of shadow, that i need an excuse to use, but i dont think its place is this deck.
