Budget Commander: Oloro, Ageless Ascetic

Commander / EDH Budget WUB (Esper)

TwentyDollarDecks

Because I am a budget player, this deck was constructed for the Commander format with the condition that its total value could not exceed $100.00. The value of each these cards was based on the Medium price rating for each card on TCGPlayer.com, in order to avoid inaccurately high or low prices. I hope that this decklist can be of use to other budget players, or simply any player looking for a fun casual deck that can be easily assembled. Enjoy!

Due to the sheer variance of the Commander format, I can't list every card interaction for this deck. I can, however, provide a broad description for how the deck is played.

At its heart, this is a control deck. It doesn't feature any game-ending combos or massive locks, just your typical control components on the huge scale of the Commander format. This is because I believe the deck is more fun to play and to play against this way, which is closer to the spirit of a casual format like this one.

Your first few turns will often be spent playing taplands and dropping mana artifacts, nothing crazy. After that, you might counter a spell here or even wipe the board if somebody is getting out of control more quickly than usual. The main intention here is to keep the board clean and to quietly gain card advantage. Oloro, Ageless Ascetic should be gaining you 2 life a turn, so this will provide a healthy buffer to keep early aggro from stinging you much.

In the midgame you'll really want to start coming ahead in card advantage. This deck features many engines for doing so, and several tutors are available in case you're missing the cards you need. Be careful with the Transmute mechanic however; browsing through your deck looking for a card to choose can be frustrating for the other players if you don't know what you're looking for. Be courteous.

Once the lategame hits, you should be drawing several more cards per turn than your opponents. The high removal density of this deck means that you'll probably have the tools you need to shut down whatever the other players are trying to throw at you. At this point, it's time to finish the game. This deck features several large flying creatures, some of which are very resilient to removal. If you're having trouble making something stick, try finding a pair of Swiftfoot Boots before you put your beater into the fray.

If another player has generated a large life total, remember that Magister Sphinx can put any player on a two-turn clock, regardless of what their life total is.

To play this deck more effectively, try to learn the little synergies that many of its cards share with one another. There's a lot going on here if you know where to look!

Aside from that, just remember that Commander is a political format. Try to make friends earlygame, and don't wipe the board unless somebody is really out of control. That tends to miff people a little.

You might find that the other players will gang up on you if your life total gets too high, so you should never feel shy about spending some of that life on a big spell. The trick here is to keep under the radar until you really have control of the game. If you can pull that off, you'll have won before anybody else at the table even knows what happened.
