Ever wanted a deck where you just play lands, ramp, play more lands then hit your opponents for damage? If you do, then this is the deck for you!
Tatyova, Benthic Druid gives us access to and , allowing us to ramp hard and get our lands out, thus allowing us to cast our win conditions while also giving us access to spells to protect our board until we get a favourable board state.
Let me run through how the cards in this deck help make it work:
Win Conditions
Before we talk more about the deck, let's talk about how to win with the deck.
- Avenger of Zendikar: Produces 0/1 plant tokens that get really big as we play more lands, eventually growing large enough to swing in for massive damage.
- Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar: Grows bigger with more lands on the board. He can become a fatty that hits hard with this deck.
- Rampaging Baloths: Creates a 4/4 each time we play a land, meaning this 4/4 producer can get out of control easily. Trample can also help it get past chump blockers.
- Roil Elemental: Instead of winning with our own win conditions, we can sometimes win using our opponents' win conditions too!
- Laboratory Maniac: Our last-resort win condition in the event of us getting milled out in the game.
Lands!
This deck revolves around playing lands, ramping, playing more lands then swinging in for the win at the right time. Here's how we can get the lands we need onto the battlefield:
- Cultivate
- Kodama's Reach
- Rampant Growth
- Explosive Vegetation
- Skyshroud Claim
- Boundless Realms
- Splendid Reclamation
- Nature's Lore
- Broken Bond
- Sakura-Tribe Scout
- Sakura-Tribe Elder
- Ramunap Excavator
- Nissa, Vital Force
- Nissa, Vastwood Seer
- Skyshroud Ranger
- Harrow
- Crop Rotation
- Burgeoning
- Khalni Heart Expedition
More lands!
Since we already have ways to get lands out onto the battlefield, what else do we need? Ways to get multiple lands onto the battlefield on the same turn! Here's how we can do that
- Azusa, Lost but Seeking
- Wayward Swordtooth
- Courser of Kruphix
- Summer Bloom
- Burgeoning
- Exploration
- Rites of Flourishing
Protection
Now that we know our game plan, we need cards that protect our board and allow us to get the win conditions out:
- Cyclonic Rift: A must-have in every deck with
- Krosan Grip: Tool to get rid of those pesky artifacts or enchantments our opponents play that do not benefit us in any way.
- Counterspell: The name says it all.
- Negate: What?! Another Counterspell?! Oh wait, this one's slightly different but just as useful,
- Deprive: Oh wow, a third Counterspell. This one sets up future landfall triggers too!
- Reality Shift: Our solution to dealing with indestructible creatures. Use it wisely.
- Squall Line: Ground-based air defence! Say no to opponents' creatures with flying!
- Heroic Intervention: Probably the best spell in the deck for protecting our board. Also to be used wisely.
- Rhystic Study: Indirect protection by denying our opponents mana. We get card draw if they choose to keep their mana, so we win the trade anyway!
- Retreat to Coralhelm: Indirect protection by "removing" an enemy blocker or attacker. Can be triggered multiple times.
- Sylvan Safekeeper: Instant-speed protection!
- Meloku the Clouded Mirror: Creates 1/1 chump blockers to protect us from creature-based decks
Ramp and Mana fixing
Despite being able to get out so many lands, we still need to ramp hard and fix our mana if we encounter difficult situations. Luckily, some cards are able to do just that:
- Sol Ring
- Thought Vessel
- Kruphix, God of Horizons
- Lotus Cobra
Filters, benefits and card advantage
Even though we have so many cards that do what we need, we do not always need them. Thankfully there are some cards in the deck that assist us in finding the pieces will need or simply bring value to us when cast.
- Thrasios, Triton Hero: Scry at instant speed
- Eternal Witness: Who said we can't reuse cards from our graveyard?
- Stone-Seeder Hierophant: Tap it to untap lands for more mana, then play lands to untap it. Rinse and repeat.
- Worldly Tutor: The ticket to finding the one card we so desperately need in every game.
- Tireless Tracker: Card draw. Enough said.
- Venser's Journal: Rock of life gain.
- Alhammarret's Archive: More card draw!
- Thassa, God of the Sea: The free scry every turn gives us tons of card advantage!
This deck is my first take on building Tatyova, Benthic Druid for EDH and I'm open to suggestions on improving it. +1 upvote if you liked it too! Thanks in advance!
