Disclaimer: My playgroup doesn't play infinite mana or two card instant win combos. We have also corrected the issues with Infect. For Infect damage to be lethal, it must be half your starting life total. Only exception is Commander-Infect damage. You only need half the necessary Commander damage rounded up. Deck I built from spare cards for a new player who joined our playgroup. It is meant to be on par with Wizards Pre-Constructed Decks and expose the player to multiple Legends they may be interested in playing with while still being semi-competitive.

There are 3 optional Commanders just like with the Pre-Cons.

  1. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
  2. Shattergang Brothers
  3. Darigaaz Reincarnated

The two highest synergy Commanders are Shattergang Brothers and Prossh, Skyraider of Kher. Shattergang Brothers is more control oriented and probably more forgiving as a commander when starting out. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher is likely the better choice as the deck becomes more competitive and he has that big burst potential for the win.

There are multiple paths to victory included in the deck, but the core strategy is to build up a big board state of creatures along with at least one of your 3 "drain" creatures (Poison-Tip Archer, Zulaport Cutthroat, Vindictive Vampire) and make it punishing to your opponents to destroy the board state. You want to make sure to keep a sac outlet available so you can respond to anyone trying to remove your "drain" creature before any mass creature kill off. That way you can respond and either kill your opponent/s or at least severely injury everyone if they try.

There is a total of 10 Legendary Creatures in the deck to help expose the new player to other options for a Commander, this plus whomever their opponents choose as their commanders should be a good starting point to help them find a creature that speaks to them. It also allows them easy access to to a commander card for their next deck and thus a good starting point to build from.

I've incldued 3 proxy OG dual lands for them to improve the deck, but I didn't main board them that way they have a 100% legal deck from the get go. I've also included a few cards to start them off on their journey to improve this deck once they have a better understanding of how it plays and which route they want to go with it as they make improvements to streamline it in that direction. Those cards are listed in the "Maybe" section.
