Budget Junk? In standard? Is that possible?

Underworld Coinsmith
is a freaking beast. His second ability is such a great mana dump late game for any lifegain deck. I've got a few orzhov decks that utilize Ajani's Pridemate
with bits of life gain (W/B Lifegain Constellation, W/B Suicide Constellation) and the coinsmith is just really too good to pass up. Just about all of my creatures cost 2 or less, so I use Return to the Ranks
for some crazy shenanigans. Imagine bringing back two Underworld Coinsmith
, a Nyx-Fleece Ram
, and an Ajani's Pridemate
. That's 6 constellation triggers and 6 pridemate triggers.

Hey man, love the deck idea and I get that you're going budget on this, but trust me, if you would unbudget yourself you could really make this deck one of a kind. I tried your idea out and it runs so well, but I threw in 2 Ajani Mentor of Heroes and 2 Courser of Kruphix and it works magically man. The Ajani really helps for many reasons. 1) He pumps stuff which works great in combo with Hardened Scales cause he dishes out 6 counters once it resolves. 2) His second plus one is great for any game time when you're having draw troubles, a rare occasion in this deck but still happens. 3) the ultimate really helps, of course but 4) people see a planeswalker and its an immediate target. Ajani isn't the main purpose of the deck so watching someone waste an Utter End on him is great cause it means one less card is locked and loaded for the big creatures. Seriously man, take away the budget restriction and throw in Courser and Ajani. They help so much.

SO FUN! A note though, bring paper to remember your life total and your creature's power and toughness. =D

Why only 3 sunbond and only 2 hardened scales? You could cut ordeal of erebos or something. PS: maybe sideboard despise? Against control, they'll prbably counter it, so it wont get rid of their win con.

PS: as user:RedChambers said you could un-budget the deck, could you maybe add some suggestions on what to splurge on first if you were to un-budget it? Just a suggestion. Sorry for the spam.

Personally I think the land count needs to be increased. While playtesting I've yet to have a game where I have enough land to cast everything I need.

SirHellsing420 I disagree. The fact that there are 23 lands in the deck means I'm almost going to have at least 2 or 3 in hand, and more as the game goes on. There is no way that I would want more lands, as then all that happens is instead of drawing win cons I draw lands and lands all the time, which just isnt useful. In a deck where there are already things that I want to put in but there isnt room, there isnt any need to put in more lands.

+1, In Australia this isn't quite as budget as you would think, but I just bought most of these cards regardless. Looks like so much fun! Can't wait to play this with friends.

needs mana ramp, the cheap ones are Voyaging Satyr and Elvish Mystic otherwise Courser of Kruphix would be a beast!

I agree with Kiora_Fan-01 on adding some green mana ramp; that way you can reduce your lands to 20-21. Later on when theros gets rotated out or if you don't want to spend money on cards that'll get rotated out soon from the very start, I'd sub out Gods Willing and Whip of Erebos for Feat of Resistance , Longshot Squad and Tuskguard Captain .

as soon*
Either way, Whip of Erebos isn't so great now that you added Eternal Thirst so I'd sub it out regardless. If you're not worried about making it so that it rotates out as late as possible, and are going with something like Voyaging Satyr , I'd change my recommendation to Abzan Falconer over Longshot Squad .
If you hear anything I say, go with a little less Gods Willing and/or Despise and go with that much more Hardened Scales and/or Eternal Thirst . You'll hate those moments when you don't draw Hardened Scales and realize after the game the it was near the bottom of your deck. Plus, having more isn't exactly bad either.
If you have space, consider Retribution of the Ancients and Windstorm

Hero of iroas, ordeal of heliod, ordeal of nylea, 2 more hardened scales, solidarity of heroes. and yes courser would go a long way for ramping and life gain counter triggers.

Hi so I am brand spanking new to magic the gathering, one word, overwhelming, and websites like these really help me narrow down what 'I'd like to play', as I have seen written and said to me by many other seasoned players. So that being said, I bought this deck, and I appreciate that it is a budget or I guess junk deck is the correct terminology for it. But I am just starting out so its nice to find a deck final that's made up of most of the cards I already own from the current sets, and some here and there that I just need to buy. Which I did and am looking forward to playing this deck, and I actually purchased another deck that has 3 Ajani, Mentor of Heros and putting those two in might make this a very interesting deck I will play around with that and comment again. Happy gathering magic to all!

I'm just starting to play MTG. Your deck looks fun, and might be a good way for me to finally answer the continual trouncings that my son gives me when we play. But why are so many of the cards listed as illegal?
September 28, 2014 10:38 p.m.
and what would you guys suggest for counterspells to put in this deck for the occasional match with control decks at fnm, because im noticing theres not a lot of of them in here.
September 29, 2014 3:19 a.m.
mangrel365, TappedOut is listing all the cards from the newest set as illegal. Give it a few days and hopefully the issue will be fixed.

the only thing this deck needs is a bit more removal

First off, awesome deck- just ordered the missing pieces, can't wait to try it out.
Second, what would you swap Whip of Erebos, Courser, and Banishing Light for? I have singles of each of em, and was thinking of Sideboarding Whip and Banishing Light, and swapping Courser in for one of the Gods Willings. Think that would work?
KinGxDaviD says... #1
Solidarity of Heroes might help this, even as a 1 or 2 of could give extra muscle you need to close a match.
