3rd @ FNM —Nov. 7, 2014

Went 3-1 at FNM overall, with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses, a breakdown:

Match 1: Minotaurs

This was a matchup against a fairly new player. He kept two hand with only black sources so I was able to build up a stable hand to control his field when he got to his red mana sources. 2-0

Match 2: Jeskai Tempo

A slightly weaker version of the Tempo deck, it seemed to be missing a few of the key pieces the deck needs to be good, such as Monastery Swiftspears and Goblin Rabblemasters. Game 1 I underestimated the amount of Burn he had and misused countspells on creatures instead, so he was able to burn me out when I ran out of answers. But in Games 2 and 3 I was able to shift my strategy accordingly. 2-1

Match 3: Naya Midrange

A tough matchup, especially in game 1. With two unanswered Sorin, Solemn Visitors, one killed by an early Pearl Lake Ancient, meant I had a tough time cleaning up the board. A timely Extinguish All Hope fixed the board in my favor again after he had built up his board with Wingmate Roc, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, and other monster goodies. I was down to 1 life, but a Negated Chain to the Rocks followed up with a Empty the Pits for 6 meant I was able to hit for 20 in a single swing. Game 2 went a lot smoother with 2 Despises getting rid of his only threats in hand and an early Pearl Lake Ancient sealing things away. 2-0

Match 4: Jeskai Tempo 2

The more competitive build of the deck with all the correct pieces. This being a bad matchup due to the fact I have very little against early game threats meant I had little hope of winning this matchup. Game 1 was lost to 3 consecutive Mantis Riders with no Bile Blights in sight. Game 2 was won due to my opponent keeping an iffy hand with only one land. Game 3 was fast for me keeping an iffy hand.

Overall I was quite happy with how the night went. I really need to find some Drown in Sorrows for the sideboard, but was unable to find any before the tournament started. The most interesting new card I saw on the field was Hushwing Gryff, which I expect to have a place in the new meta against the likes of all the Siege Rhinos and Hornet Queens. Quiet Contemplation was also a large success and I was quite happy with how it performed. Many players didn't expect to see it and it helped reduce the need for consistent kill spells so that one spell kills a creature and locks down another.
