Black has always fascinated me, with its goal being to attain power at all costs. This deck kinda follows that same goal through different means. I wanted to create a effective, powerful control deck while being relatively budget, hence the one Liliana of the Veil.
In the early game, push out your discard and sacrifice spells to prevent early, impactful threats. Against an aggressive deck like Mono Red Burn, you can deal some major damage to an opponent's ideal hand.
During mid-game, push out more costly, but more powerful spells and creatures. If you haven't drawn into Liliana of the Veil, but you have a Demonic Tutor in hand, go ahead and search for her or your one-of Sorin Markov, if he isn't in hand either.
Late game, you begin to take the board back with Killing Wave and
Remorseless Punishment
. Both spells force your opponent to pay life or sacrifice creatures. With
Remorseless Punishment
, you have the added benefit of discard, as well as repeating the process again. Also, when casting Killing Wave, you should consider two things. 1.) It's a generally good idea to tap out. Since the opponent will have to pay an absurd amount of life for each creature(5 or more usually does the trick), this strategy works well against lifegain or swarm strategies. The only times this strategy doesn't work is when you're up against graveyard shenanigan decks, like Dredge. 2.) Just let your creatures die. Unless there's an important one that's preventing you from losing, just let them all go.
Griselbrand and
Kokusho, the Evening Star
are the finishers of the deck. Griselbrand allows blocking plenty of creatures without losing him. He also allows to get any life that has been lost back, then using it for the sevenfold
Yawgmoth's Bargain
he has.
Kokusho, the Evening Star
is also good at finishing your opponents. Not only does he ping the opponent for 5, but you also gain life equal to what was dealt. Sorin Markov can also be considered a finisher as well. Not only can he siphon health, he can drop an opponent to 10 health the moment he comes in. And his ultimate is absolutely perfect for this strategy. Don't bother with discard now, just f**k up the opponent as best as you can. Nobody knows how powerful and devastating it is until they see it happen.
Of course this deck is far from perfection, after all, this is my first mono black deck. If you have any suggestions for the main board, and, in particular, the sideboard, don't hesitate to leave a comment and upvote this deck.
Thanks! :)
