Interesting Rulings

  • Augment requires the target creature to be a Host. That’s part of the type, which is not granted by bottom creatures, so the top creature has to be a Host to get an Augment. But Augment only cares about Host when you activate the ability; after the creature is Augmented, you can Mutate the Host with a new, non-Host top card and the Augment will stick around. The P/T bonus of the Augment applies regardless of what creature is on top.

  • If an effect exiles a merged creature then returns it to the battlefield, the individual cards each return. They're no longer merged. If that effect has an additional effect on the returned object, it affects each of these permanents.

  • If an effect exiles a merged creature then returns it to the battlefield, the individual cards each return. They're no longer merged. If that effect has an additional effect on the returned object, it affects each of these permanents.

  • 702.139b As a mutating creature spell begins resolving, if its target is illegal, it ceases to be a mutating creature spell and continues resolving as a creature spell and will be put onto the battlefield under the control of the spell’s controller.

  • 702.139e A mutated permanent has all abilities of each card and token that represents it. Its other characteristics are derived from the topmost card or token.

  • Characteristics added to a permanent by a mutating creature spell are copiable values, so they can be copied by another object (such as a Clone that enters the battlefield) (C.R. 706.2).

  • Cards with augment considered creature cards. If something asks you to discard a creature card, you may discard a card with augment. But they can't exist by themselves on the battlefield. If you somehow put a card with augment onto the battlefield without actually augmenting it, it will head to the graveyard.

  • Creatures with augment don't have a mana cost and can't be cast. What they can be is combined with host creatures to form a new single creature.

  • Augment is an activated ability that works while the card is in your hand. To activate it, reveal the card, pay the augment cost, and choose a host creature as a target. When the ability resolves, combine the augment creature with the host creature.

  • Say I activate augment and in response my opponent destroys the host? What happens? The creature with augment isn't put onto the battlefield until the ability resolves. This means if the host is destroyed, the creature with augment stays in your hand. You can't choose a different host, but you can activate augment again if there's another host available.
