Patch 3.0

Imagine: You have been playing Magic The Gathering for over a decade with your closest friends. Your legacy is lockouts with Oloro, Wheels with Nekusar, Destroying permanents with Reaper King, and just getting out of control with Heliod, Sun Crowned. Your friends begin to despise you, every deck bringing with it only consequence, a twisted sadism entwined to each of your preferred builds. But, on the dawn of the new decade, sensitivities are on the rise and emotional intelligence is all the rage! What could you possibly do but... Make a group hug deck!

Kwain, Itinerant Meddeler comes in as my Commander here for two-fold reasons. First, it's one of the least aggressive / mean cards in the format and brings some great upside with him, and second, it's a bunny rabbit, and I've been wanting to build a bunny deck for years now.

So, what's the point of this deck? Quite frankly, I want to enable everyone else at the table to have a good time, pop off, and enjoy themselves without going infinite or beating too hard on any other specific player. A plethora of counters, bounces, and untaps like Maze of Ith make this quite a reactive deck, where we will almost always want to have at least untapped when it's not our turn. If there is a full round of uneventful turns or low priority targets, just set off a few of our fun group hug draws from outlets like Walking Archive, Geier Reach Sanitarium or Folio of Fancies.

I fought with myself internally on whether or not I wanted to include win conditions in this deck, and have ultimately decided that it is worth it to have a little bit of threat included. I've based a lot of my list here on the fantastic deck Wizzardrix (Kwain, Itinerant Meddler) by TotesMcGoats but I diverge only slightly in the goals of the deck. I play in a meta that is teetering on the brink of competitive EDH and thusly I am forced into keeping a few wins for myself, and that's why I have included Laboratory Maniac, Jace, Wielder of Mysteries and Approach of the Second Sun. I've opted to exclude Thassa's Oracle and other infinite combos (which I despise as a wincon in general) and instead run more countermagic and draw, and eventually would like to swap out the Jace for Divine Intervention just for the pimp factor. I want to keep this deck far more on the casual side and enable friends; The ultimate goal being this is the "good guy" version of my favorite EDH deck, The Wheel // Nekusar, the Mindrazer. We are going to be drawing a TON of cards, and comboing mid-late off of a big Prosperity, Minds Aglow or Windfall will either win us the game outright or force everyone into a group-loss. Either way, getting to hold all our cards is the priority!

With my preference for a definitive game-winner pronounced, I do agree with TotesMcGoats in their desire to avoid being painted as a target and absolutely refuse to include cards that actively hurt other players like Drannith Magistrate or Aven Mindcensor. I'd like to drive more intuitive, fun pieces like Wedding Ring and Bucknard's Everfull Purse, and open to bringing in more alliance cards like Oath of Lieges as well.

Updates Add

Big update today, dropping nearly all the counterspells from the deck in favor of spells that do fun shit. It's a bit of a power pump with Consecrated Sphinx, but if I am helping everyone, I'd like to deck myself too if possible. Here's to a new Dustruffle!
