Maybeboard

A Boros () colored deck that I have built with the intention of using Angelfire Ignition and some other spells as a means to exploit my favorite legendary creature, Bushi Tenderfoot   (Kenzo, the Hard Hearted).

A veteran, high-ranking samurai in the daimyo Konda's service.

Kenzo is revered amongst the Lore of the Champions of Kamigawa. A set pre-dating the flip mechanics of Innistrad, before the Wolves and Vampires.. a story told in a simple flip. The story of a man who transcends the mortal bonds of war and ascends to legend, reaching the fame and prestige of his title.. Kenzo, the Hard Hearted. The bitter tragedy of his being in the Kami-War, subject to the strange challenges of the Kami. A truly bad ass Samurai.

Bushido

"Way of the Warrior", increases a creature's power and toughness..

Indestructible

(Angelfire Ignition) to move without ceasing, to never know destruction. A Valorous Stance can change the tide of battle instantly!

Ceaseless Attacking

Inevitably, your opponents will block the damage. Whether they want to or not, at some point the swings will hurt and they'll need to respond accordingly. The important thing is to have or available for haste/burn, or protection, respectively.

Choose Your Legacy

Kenzo has learned much of what has passed since his time with the Champions of Kamigawa, through local myths about an Eiganjo Uprising during The Shattered States Era  , and the passing centuries that gave way to the Era of Enlightenment  . Knowing what his actions have already caused, what path will you choose to walk..?

"Before the war, we prayed to Kataki to sharpen our swords and harden our armor. Without his blessing our weapons are all but useless against the kami hordes." -Kenzo the Hardhearted (Kataki, War's Wage)

"..And now we move forward with Giver of Runes, and if Gods Willing, we may make it through the fray yet."

We re-join Kenzo on the battlefield.. he comes to consciousness after seeing only several peaceful Kami in a March of Otherworldly Light..

The Samurai Kenzo finds several goblins (Goblin Champion) "championed" among their peoples, and a few stray bunnies (Rabbit Battery) that somehow seem to be from the future..

..until an Imperial Recovery Unit accompanied by a Dragonfly Suit hovers over a nearby Plateau. It suddenly became clear that Kenzo was at home.. but he had been gone a long time.

Passing through a Clifftop Retreat, he sees the very monument of the Mountain surrounding him. Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance, and he remembered the legends of Ryusei, the Falling Star and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. At the keep he discovers mystical artifacts like the Mirror Box placed alongside Ancestral Katana. The juxtaposition is.. jarring to say the least. He remembered the Fable of the Mirror-Breaker   and kept a safe distance from the relics.

A Selfless Samurai has more than once protected Kenzo from the fray of the Kami before, and maybe like Konda's Hatamoto have always sought to stay vigilant since he's known them, ..maybe he can find new friends..! Then again, maybe not.

Along the path Kenzo has forged, few before have remained in his company for long. His power was Tempered in Solitude, and he traversed from Roadside Reliquary to Sundown Pass, always under Shelter from the forces surrounding him, but for how long?

In the new millennium, Reinforced Ronin have taken up posts to defend the Dynasty of Kamigawa.. but they're different! And strangely familiar to the Ronin Houndmaster from his homelan- err, time... right. Kenzo hadn't quite made heads or tails of it.

Michiko's Reign of Truth   had led to a peculiar mixing pot, he wondered if she would be surprised or delughted by the scene in front of Kenzo.

There were Peerless Samurai among them and Asari Captain that lead platoons of prestigous warriors, an Imperial Subduer that was guarded with Vigilance by a nearby Eiganjo Exemplar. All of this Procession while a Bronzeplate Boar sniffed out a set of Lizard Blades. The autonomic "animals" aroused a chuckle from Kenzo while a Metallic Mimic seem to coggle nearby, posturing his Warrior's stance. It reminded him of Kentaro, the Smiling Cat and his clever personality.

"The bonds of bushido will draw the dishonored back someday, and I will be there waiting." - Kentaro, the Smiling Cat

Kenzo grasped at Kentaro's wisdom, and wondered where his former companion was. Wondered how long Kentaro had waited for his comrades to return home. How long he'd been stranded..

Kenzo felt that these are strange times with Cyborg swordsman (Upriser Renegade) that are donned in Akki War Paint.. alongside strange new Samurai who proudly share their lineage, like Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryusei, and his legion of Akki Ronin.

Kenzo was confused. He thought goblins only capable of Guttural Response and Ambitious Assault. He realized that maybe goblins were more than fodder among the Hall of the Bandit Lord. Maybe change was good, and whether he liked it or not, it was happening.

"As I died, I rejoiced. I would see my family again. But then I woke up back on the battlefield. Back in Kamigawa. Back in hell." —Kenzo the Hardhearted (Yomiji, Who Bars the Way)

He pondered on his return, if it was a Path to Exile. What of the Devoted Retainer he once was, and if would ever trade his Swords to Plowshares. His Call to Glory remained unfulfilled it seemed. He wondered what remained to be vanquished.

Kenzo had seen a lot in the Kami War, traveling over Windswept Heath and through Flooded Strand. However all of this seemed so different.. and so much seemed to remain the same.

After The Fall of Lord Konda  , it seemed all could have been forsaken, betrayed for That Which Was Taken. A fool's folly. An endless genocide for Konda's ego. Kenzo had been betrayed

The former prestigous warlord thought on The Restoration of Eiganjo   and grinned, despite his frustrations, and if only for a moment. With Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire intact.. he felt a small touch of comfort. He took solace in the time when a Blacksmith's Skill was all he needed to sway the tide of his fate. The warrior felt resolve, as thought he would see this through as well.

Standing near a Secluded Steppe, Kenzo secured his Wakazashi and Katana with a Lion Sash, and breathed out.

The once feeble Bushi Tenderfoot   has come far from the Plains he once roamed, and his quest is far from over.

The Bunny

Using Rabbit Battery on turn 1 to preface the attack can make/break the setup, because it allows an underlying level of haste and a boost of damage. This assuming that you'd rather have floating around. If favoring is more your speed, putting Bushi Tenderfoot   into play on one is also a consideration. Just.. have some protection lined up going into turn 2.

Getting "Bushi" with it

On turn 2 we (typically) bring out Bushi Tenderfoot   and proceed to do one of two things. Your choice can vary depending on how you choose to walk the path of the Samurai!

"Way of the Swift"

: power courses through your veins with Messenger's Speed, you can Expedite the dispatching of your foes. It'd be best if your opponents don't Infuriate you. After all, the closest friend of a Samurai is their savage Reflexes.

"Way of the Runes"

: those who guide you along the path of life do so with Righteousness, and a well placed Deflecting Palm can redirect your opponents energy right back at them. Although a more subtle approach, you are still a Samurai. A Defiant Strike is always amongst your choices.

"Angelfire Samurai Strike"

Turn 3 is where Angelfire Ignition comes out! With your furious Samurai, Kenzo is ready to strike! With some support from Goblin Champion and Exalted triggers, or a variety of other buffs like Eiganjo Exemplar or Asari Captain (on later turns) means this swing has the potential to put a noteworthy amount of distance between yourself and your opponent.

Kamigawa's Samurai

While focused as a central swinging icon, Kenzo is not alone as Selfless Samurai can provide a lot of utility as well. An Ambitious Assault is just as likely to get your opponents attention!

Finishing the Fight

Along our journey Kenzo is bound to meet some magnificent warriors! Whose help will you enlist..?

Fumiko the Lowblood

This blood-bathing ronin shines with Bushido triggers.

Raiyuu, Storm's Edge

A valiant and noble warrior, who can cause an eruption on the battlefield, if not outright ending the game.

The Yamazaki Twins

When Kenzo roamed throughout the Kami War, he knew of the Brothers Yamazaki. Now, a millennium later he crosses paths with the descendant twins: Heiko Yamazaki, the General and Norika Yamazaki, the Poet.

A prepared warrior, Kenzo has a plethora of different artifacts at his disposal to help him along his quest

Basilisk Collar

Using this alongside Exalted is a great way to secure a more prominent threat against your opponent's early board-state.

Shadowspear

Removing Indestructible and Hexproof from your opponents stuff is just savage.

Maul of the Skyclaves

Does the work without Sigarda's Aid

Umezawa's Jitte

This catch-all is a must feature for this kind of match-up.

Ancestral Katana

More of a flavor inclusion, but still a potential depending on what your curve/budget look like.

Eater of Virtue

A nasty sword for a nasty Samurai.

Colossus Hammer

This is here for the Bonk component; consider Steelshaper's Gift and Magnetic Theft if the absolute swing is more your goal.

A Lifetime of Training

The Samurai have several ways of ending conflict, among the Ride Down of their opposition, some more savage of the Samurai have been known to simply Rip Apart their opponents.

Say Farewell to your measly opposition, as they face the Wrath of God.

The awe-inspiring Banishing Slash from a katana is one that ends the battle, and does so quickly.

One of the most Arcane and powerful of magic at a Samurai's disposal is the simplest of a Red Elemental Blast or a Pyroblast.

Updates Add

Couple cool things printed since I last visited this deck, and potentially have some great ways to make the deck pop and retain its aggressive posture.

Brutal Cathar  Flip makes the list for removal utility, representing a trip to Innistrad where Kenzo meets Werewolves.

Oddly enough.. the Omenpaths carried our Wandering Samurai (not that other one) to a place where Elves are turning into Werewolves; Eldraine. Werefox Bodyguard joins the roster.

Goblin Champion bounces out of the list as a circumstantial slot, and will retain a maybeboard.

Kellan, the Fae-Blooded is also on my radar.
