My friend made a casual deck following the concept of control the board with instants and sorceries and
Deathbringer Liege
years ago back in the morningtide era. I've decided to resurrect the deck with a bunch of new goodies that have come out since. The deck pretty much goes as follows:
Deathbringer Liege
: This is the card the deck is built around, almost every spell procs his triggered ability which is one of the primary controls of the deck in addition to every creature benefits from his buff.
Divinity of Pride: this guy is a big dude who comes down turn 6 or later preferably after the liege and "brings the team home" with massive damage and lifegain.
These next two I'm on the fence about, I love both of them and I'm not sure which is better/how many of each I should have in so for the moment I'm just putting in two of each which seems to work well enough in the playtestsNip Gwyllion: For starters, it's a turn one play with lifelink and gets 4/4 turn 2 with the edge, also is a 1 cmc kill spell if I have a liege on the board.
Nightsky Mimic: I like this one a little more, starts swinging on turn 3, can turn into a quasi combat trick if you play an instant. 4/4 flyer when I cast a spell and with edge can turn into a 7/7 flyer easy enough. although it is 2 mana, but I'm still feeling that this is the better cheap card
Obzedat, Ghost Council: This is another card i'm on the fence about. It's an amazing card and I think it wouldn't be bad in this deck, the only thing I'm worried about is another 5 drop as I think my curve is too high as it is.
I think for the most part all the instants are self explanatory, but there are some things I want to say about a few of them.
Beckon Apparition
: I like this card because of the synergy with
Deathbringer Liege
and Nightsky Mimic. 1 cmc instant speed that makes a flying dude that also benefits from Edge of the Divinity
Dismember: I love this card and the only thing I'm trying to figure out is if I'm okay with having only 2 in the deck.
Mortify, Unmake, and
Orzhov Charm
I feel are pretty self explanatory.
Read the Bones: I love drawing cards and think this deck could really benefit from it. I figured this was the best option. I was also thinking Erebos, God of the Dead though and would love suggestions particularly in reference to card advantage in this deck.
Edge of the Divinity: I love this card and think it goes really well in the deck, at 1 cmc it can be a cheap removal spell and/or a solid pump to get in some early damage or late game beats.
Gift of Orzhova
: Not really sure how I feel about this card being in the mainboard. I think I take them out and put in more
Beckon Apparition
or more Dismember. I was thinking that they would be nice if put on a liege, nip, or mimic, but at 3 cmc it's pricey for what it does and only the mimic and liege get the full benefit.
Emeria, The Sky Ruin: I like it, it's not too difficult to get 7 plains out and the only thing that makes me nervous about it is that it comes into play tapped and will I get any value. I'm not too sure this is like gift of orzhova in that I added it in at the end and I'm just not too sure how I like it. A friend suggested that I replace it with Mutavault so i'm going to test that out and see how those do in comparison to the sky ruins.
The sideboard is a complete mess and frankly i'm not too sure what all needs to go in there. I know for a fact that I want to put Batwing Brume in for matchups against twin exarch, other than that I just picked out some cards that I thought might be decent against certain matches. I'm thinking about putting in Iona, Shield of Emeria because i'm nervous about my answers to blue control decks and a friend suggested that when up against those matches, just wait cast iona choosing blue and that should solve a lot of counterspell problems. I would also like to see how Hero's Downfall and Liliana of the Veil fit in. I think i would hold on lilli though as she's pretty pricey
In the maybe board is all the cards I could think of that could potentially find a spot in my deck, these are only the cards that I came up with, so if you think of any that you feel would be good in this deck please share and comment! I've playtested the deck several times and so far it's whooped affinity and pod, but I'm nervous how it does against other control decks. Thanks for checking it out
