Viashino Heretic might help you dispose of hateful artifacts

After a bit more playtesting, I have concluded that

  1. I need more ramp to get Purphoros, God of the Forge out in turn 3 consistently
  2. smack80 is right - cheaper ramp is better than fancy ramp. Maybe even more summons or creatures are needed.
  3. Thatcher Revolt not amazing in the deck.
  4. Deck is extremely vulnerable to Cyclonic Rift, Devastation Tide, etc.

To be continued...

You're playing Blood Moon but not Magus of the Moon? Look at your commander again. The deck needs to replace all of the fancy "Commander Staples" with just more creatures that do something similar, even if they're worse on paper.

Skirk Prospector turns your goblins into more spells to cast goblins which you use to win. Get yourself a Goblin Matron and if you're playing MTGO, Imperial Recruiter is pretty cheap, use it to fetch Norin the Wary. Moggcatcher is card advantage, tutoring, creature, mana acceleration all rolled into one. Goblin Lackey and Warren Instigator add goblin power and accelerate you. Tuktuk Scrapper destroys an artifact and damages all opponents. Predator Dragon can finish games as well.

As for lands, Ancient Tomb, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx can add mana. I also run Druidic Satchel but ymmv.

I would drop Fork, Past in Flames, Chandra's Pyromancer, Pyromancer's goggles. Add Dualcaster Mage - pro tip, even without your commander, Dualcaster Mage with either Twinflame or Heat Shimmer is an infinite damage combo. Gratuitous Violence is another good card.

It might not be something you run into in your play group, but every Purphoros deck should probably run answers for Torpor Orb. It would also help with things like that Winter Orb lock out that you mentioned.

... and I'm back!

Based on smack80's suggestions, I'm considering a major update of the deck, with focus on more creatures and faster, more consistent, ramp.

I am currently considering the following replacements:

These changes both increase ramp consistency, lowers ACMC, and increases creature count. This prompts further considerations of replacing

Since they have synergy with

I am even considering replacing the last strains of control for more creature synergy (e.g., Tuktuk Scrapper and Goblin Matron). The following could go if I must

Any thoughts?

Cheers

@TrixerFurKids In regards to Torpor Orb and Winter Orb, I should find room for Tuktuk Scrapper and Goblin Matron for a total of 3 responses and 2 couple of tutors. Probably also Moggcatcher for another tutor / CA card.

@GobboE I think I'll stick with the goblin options since those are tutorable and have other synergies, but thank you for the suggestion.

Cheers

Norin the Wary, Genesis Chamber - your welcome.

Chandra's Spitfire - for when a huge flyer killing a player is effective
Hangarback Walker - win condition
Snake Basket - for when you've ramped enough
Overblaze - surprise!

Would you be able to utilize Wort, the Raidmother? I'm new to the commander format and I know that every card must match the color identity of your general, but does that still apply to spells with hybrid mana symbols?

whoops my bad. I saw Tokens and read Creatures so I was wondering why you didn't have Norin in there. I'm not that smart. Sorry

@coordiat: I think the Thopter Assembly is too slow to include, especially sine it misses ETB/LTB effects.

@DAmieba: Abandoning Impact Tremors was a tough call. It is excellent if pulled early game, but after the first 3-5 draws it becomes an (almost) dead draw.

@Vextierium: I don't think 25 creatures are enough to run Genesis Chamber... basically same reasoning as for Impact Tremors. If it also triggered on tokens, it would be insane.

@shaistyone: Hangarback Walker seems like a must. I'll have to think about what to drop. The rest I need strong aruments to replace any cards I've allready got in the deck.

@calvinwarning: Wort, the Raidmother is not in my color identity (see Commander rules part 3, examples) so I can't play her. If I could, I probably would.

I see there is a bit of goblin tribal going on, but perhaps Viashino Heretic instead of one of the artifact goblins?

As far as the arguments/reasons behind the other cards, here you go:

Snake Basket - there are just times when things stall out - how much can you pop this thing for? 5? 10? it is an insane late game card with your general
Overblaze - damage doublers are nice when your deck wins through damage, and the fact that this is an instant is a huge plus
Chandra's Spitfire - I'll model a fairly common situation based on your deck - In a 4-player game, with Purphy and the Spitfire out, you activate Goblin Warrens. You get 3 goblins, and three damage triggers. Because of the way the Spitfire works, it triggers nine times, giving you a 28/3 flyer. And that's with three triggers, you have ways to go much deeper than that. :)

August 20, 2015 4:49 p.m.

MrHighscore says... #19

@shaistyone could you please elaborate your Chandra's Spitfire example? How does 3 goblins make 9 triggers?

August 25, 2015 2:21 p.m.

shaistyone says... #20

Because the Spitfire triggers for each opponent. 1 Purphoros trigger (2 damage to each opponent) will trigger Spitfire based on the number of opponents that are damaged.
In the dream scenario of say, a 6-person free-for-all EDH match, each Purphoros trigger would trigger the Spitfire 5 times. The previous 3 -goblin example would lead to 15 spitfire triggers, and a 46/3 flyer.

Chandra's Spitfire is kind of a silly card. My modern deck uses it with Raid Bombardment to kill people very quickly. :)

Few things maybe worth looking at:

Descent of the Dragons
Isochron Scepter

Shock50 says... #22

Ruby Medallion+Grinning Ignus+Purphoros, God of the Forge= infinite damage combo the Ruby Medallion lowers the cost of the Grinning Ignus, and you remover it via ability and get the mana to replay it and activate the ability again.

I'd consider re-adding Extraplanar Lens. Excellent acceleration early game.

MrHighscore says... #24

Thank you for the suggestions :)

@shaistyone: Chandra's Spitfire is certainly interesting. What would you drop to make room for it?

@Cerradura: Descent of the Dragons is in the deck. Isochron Scepter does not work well with only one instant.

@Shock50: You are right - I'll add it to the list!

@SorinDankov: I need to play some more games, before I'll reconsider it, but thanks. Its pro is fast accelleration, its con is loosing a land on top of the usual risk of loosing a good rock.

Cheers
