Gonna do my usual mistake and not quit while I'm ahead: As Foretold (probably too slow without e.g. proliferate), Release to the Wind, Vexing Scuttler (dunno if you have enough disposable creatures) & Elder Deep-Fiend (kinda helps with the group slug aspect as well), Endless Obedience, Herald of Anguish

Don't you think that Illusionist's Gambit would be nice?

DuNkin84 I really like that idea actually, I've been looking for more ways to turn the game in my favour and it acts directly as a punishment for attacking me. I'll see if I can find a place to put it, thanks!

jamesss I think so, but it depends on the playgroup. My playgroup probably wouldn't like him but he would work well with certain people

Maybe Neheb, the Eternal for more mana? It will trigger with Vial Smasher. Awesome deck btw, I'm building my own based on this.

JhonAF I've definitely considered Neheb, the Eternal, but in the current deck I usually don't run into many problems that he could fix since most of the time the mana issues I run into are with casting the first permanent on my turn (since I have so many instants and sorceries that I like to leave mana up for), and at 5 CMC I'm not completely sure if it's worth the attention it would draw to me. I definitely see the worth in using him though, and he would have some pretty crazy synergies with some other cards, and the more I think about it the more I realize that I should definitely put him in, but I'll have to figure out what he'll replace. Thanks for the suggestion and I'm so glad that you like my take on the archetype!

I've seen this deck on my explore page before, but I never realized that it was so budget! Amazing job with that!

scotchtapedsleeves Thanks! I'm really glad that you like that I've tried to keep my decks budget, it's one of the things I try pretty hard to do!

OMG I love it...The theme, the budget, the play-style and piloting... It really captures the vision of all of those EDH archetypes! Have you played around with any of the other tempt cards or any other Grixis commanders?

Regoober Thanks! I really appreciate that!
The thing about grixis is that it has a lot of avenues to victory. You've got Nekusar, the Mindrazer - a deck that takes group hug to a point that is detrimental to your opponents, Mairsil, the Pretender - a combo deck that can work with artifacts and flicker, Marchesa, the Black Rose - A very creature-heavy deck that has some really nice value and of course the obvious Thraximundar-style decks... There's just a lot of things to do with the colour combo. The main reason why I personally don't own any other grixis decks is for a couple reasons: a) I like to have decks in different colours, and b) people tend to associate grixis with a lot of fairly unfun playstyles, so I like to change things up so that people don't pin me as the "grixis player".
As for the tempt cycle (and tempt cards in general) you really have to be careful with how you use them, which is why I tend to use them sparingly. I'll go through each of them to explain their benefits and caveats:
Tempt with Discovery: Probably the best tempt card, since it doesn't pose an immediate threat and you can let the people who have had bad draws get some value. I've never had somebody at the table attack a player with nothing but lands over a player with other threatening permanents because "they have so many lands", and I think there are some ways to use that to your advantage. At worst you can fetch for your Arcane Lighthouse to hose a Narset
Tempt with Glory: Nice in a token deck, but there will be a lot of times in which your opponents have more creatures than you do, and they can hold the buff over you. It's also 6 mana to give your creatures a +1/+1 counter if you would benefit from more
Tempt with Immortality: Reanimate is great... REALLY great in some cases, but make sure that none of your opponents is either sitting on an Avacyn, Angel of Hope, because if they are you're going to feel really dumb for wanting that Prince of Thralls back.
Tempt with Reflections: This card is just... fun. There are so many interactions that can make this card stupid good or just plain funny, a good example being when an opponent cast it on my Duskmantle Seer to end a full-board stalemate.
Tempt with Vengeance: I like the idea, and it can be great if the table decides to let you kill one player, but a lot of the time it's just going to draw unneeded attention from players with fliers, and the majority of your tokens are just going to get blocked. Can be interesting with mass pump spells or Purphoros, God of the Forge though
Anyways, as for the Offerings (Infernal Offering, Volcanic Offering and such), while they can work as a peace treaty, they're more likely to cause the table to look at you more than you'd like. Usually instead of a peace treaty, it just looks like you've signed a blood bond with this player, so the other players don't feel bad focusing you a decent amount. However, there are some times in which it works out fine; Volcanic Offering specifically is great at dealing with a single player. If my playgroup didn't find land destruction as taboo it'd be a great include, but... well... it's pretty easy to use the card to screw over a player's mana base, so I found it unfun. Infernal Offering is great if used right though, it's a very nice give-and-take kind of card

Would Combustible Gearhulk be too flashy? It shares a synergy space with Vial Smasher (and if you're on someone's good side you can just convince them to let you draw the cards).

Coward_Token Actually that seems like a perfect fit for the deck! Since it's just a one-time thing and then after that it's just a big creature I don't think it'd draw too much attention, and it's 100% on theme for the deck. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you don't mind it being a regular thing then you could also consider Sin Prodder. (Bonus: is also a Devil.)

Commandeer synergizes with Miss Smasher and is pretty on-theme
Kinda captain obvious here but as I see it, CMD18 has given you the following options:
Xantcha, Sleeper Agent, Sower of Discord, Emissary of Grudges, Enchanter's Bane (give people choices)
Ancient Stone Idol & Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow (Smasher synergy/synergy space)
Treasure Nabber (plain good, also pretty funny but might draw too much hate)

Coward_Token I like Emissary of Grudges and Treasure Nabber a lot! Hopefully the nabber's price lowers a bit though... I think that Xantcha, Sleeper Agent is interesting but may paint more of a target on me (unless we end up having to archenemy a player). I was really excited about her initially but I'm not sure how it'd work in the deck. I like Commandeer and will probably put it in my own deck but I'd like to keep a budget cap on the deck; I've started to let that slide a bit too much and despite the deck being very reasonably-priced, I think that if I put some work into it I could legitimately cut the cost of the deck in half (which I think may be nice to budget players since that'd let them buy two decks for the price of one)
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow would work very well but I don't think that she fits the theme of the deck enough. Ancient Stone Idol is perfect for protecting me against the players that want to take my life down a peg, so I'll see if I can make room for it! I also like Sower of Discord but I feel like it turns the randomness into group slug a bit too much. I may come back to that comment and realize how wrong I was though, since it could cause some pretty great interactions.
Thanks for the suggestions! I always look at new cards in sets but they start to meld together after a bit. That was a great list! I'll see if I can make room for at least two of those suggestions, and the rest I'll most likely leave out for budget reasons.

Glad to help. I stumbled upon Captivating Glance while looking for Yennett cards; it's in Smasher Synergy Space (SSS from now on) and is pretty on-theme since you can basically use it to Donate opponent's creatures to each other.

Coward_Token That's true, I keep trying to run that card in my deck but it always ends up losing out to something else. It seems like a very fun card though! If you can think of any way for me to include it without cutting anything valuable I'd be willing to consider it

Illicit Auction is pretty similar but you'd lose out on hipster points cutting it. I personally find Blood Tyrant & Skyline Despot to be pretty underwhelming relative to their cost but you might have contradictory experiences.
Also, Psychic Battle is another SSS occupier with a choice aspect to it, although it might be too annoyingly chaotic.

Also, Custody Battle is a lot like Glance but cheaper

Coward_Token Psychic Battle I have tried and I've found that it was too annoying for our playgroup. I do like the idea of Custody Battle though, it could cause people to sacrifice a bit more than they realize which can be really useful

Starke of Rath is on-theme, although removing stuff might lead to less choice overall
I assumed you've already discounted Seizan, Perverter of Truth & Nekusar, the Mindrazer as alternatives to Bloodgift Demon?
October 25, 2018 4:30 p.m.
poorpinkus says... #25
Coward_Token I never even thought of Seizan! That's great! I'll have to see how it works out because either people will love it or they will use the cards they drew to kill it. My playgroup has gotten a bit tired of Howling Mine effects, so the initial idea was that I'd give them a slower trickle of cards at a price so that they kept coming back for more.
As for Nekusar, I think that everyone knows what you're trying to do when you run him, and I took out Bloodgift Demon because I tend to just give the cards to myself. I think I actually have it in my paper list though because it can still give me cards from Ludevic, but I find that any time I get any significant threat onto the board, it gets dealt with fairly quickly, so I am trying to aim for more instant-value or permanents that people want to keep on the board from now on.
poorpinkus says... #1
Coward_Token Oh man that's actually a really cool card! I'll consider it, but I'm not sure what it would replace. I'll really have to put this in some of my other decks though!
