2nd at WNM 4-2-0 —June 29, 2016

Our field this Wednesday was very small. Only four showed up, so we played in a round robin style.

0-2 Tokens

My partner was piloting this deck. He's gotten very good at playing it.

I Sideboarded in Declaration in Stone and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and removed Dead Weight (because it doesn't do much against Sylvan Advocate), and Ob Nixilis Reignited.

It didn't make much difference. Both games he was able to replenish his Creatures after I got rid of them, go wide very quickly, and recover from board wipes with Secure the Wastes.

2-0 Werewolves

The guy who made this deck just threw it together mostly from cards in his collection, so it wasn't that strong.

He also got severely colour screwed for both games.

That meant by the time he was able to play Creatures I already had a handful of answers.

He did get some Haste action going in the second game and got me down to 9 life very fast, but then I slowly got my life back with Shambling Vent and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet.

2-0 Seasons Past

I've played against a version of this deck once before and could only beat it Post-Sideboard.

Tonight I was able to eventually defeat it in a very grindy first game.

The shop owner came over at one point and asked my Opponent, "Do you have any win conditions left in that deck?"

"No."

My first play had been Transgress the Mind, removing his Transgress the Mind. That had given me an early advantage because I knew what he had, but he didn't know what cards I had in hand.

He did try to get some advantage late game by exiling my Creatures with two Infinite Obliteration, but by that stage I was already making Tokens with Westvale Abbey  Flip, hitting with Shambling Vent, and doing damage with the first ability of Sorin, Grim Nemesis.

I remembered how I had Sided against this deck last time, so did that again. I took out Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, Archangel Avacyn  Flip, and Ob Nixilis Reignited, and put in Declaration in Stone, and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar.

My Opponent played Orbs of Warding early on. I was still able to hit him, but it was a lot slower because Shambling Vent could only get in 1 point of damage each time.

I made quite a few misplays because I was talking with another friend who had sat down next to me, and wasn't concentrating enough.

For example, I was able to get rid of Orbs of Warding with Anguished Unmaking, but I used it on a Creature instead.

I had also planned to shut down his Drana, Liberator of Malakir with Dead Weight, and then dispatch his Hissing Quagmire with Grasp of Darkness, but I accidentally played the Grasp first. It didn't matter too much because I was able to get rid of it on his next turn with To the Slaughter

It turned out to be a fun night. Quite relaxed as we all knew each other and were playing more for fun than anything else.

There were no DCI points on the line as you need a minimum of eight players for that to happen.

I always seem to Sideboard in Declaration in Stone and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. What changes is what I Sideboard out for them.

I have Orbs of Warding in my Sideboard for Mill, and Tainted Remedy for Lifegain, but I haven't played against either of those style of decks since I added them.

I'm not taking them out because my Sideboard has been working, and I just know that the moment I do I will wish they were in.

At the end of the night I bought an Eternal Masters booster for myself and my friend.

The shop owner decided to join us in cracking a pack.

I've been trying to get Force of Will, with no success.

My friend opened Vindicate. I got a foil Counterspell. The owner got Force of Will. D'OH!

If only I had chosen that pack!

They both knew I had been hoping for that card so it was quite humourous.

I thoroughly enjoyed the night. Hope it's similar next Wednesday.
