This is a somewhat late-to-the-energy-mechanic deck, but is still a fun pick for those wanting a budget combo for playing Frontier. Please note that this is a casual build for local FNM, thus it's somewhat biased by my local meta, take that in consideration when studying it.This is no competitive decklist, I just really feel like sharing my deck over here for fun. Comments and constructive criticism are much appreciated.
The deck focuses around Whirler Virtuoso, our main win condition relies on the Decoction Module + Whirler Virtuoso
, this allows us to create a Thopter for 3 energy and then gain that energy back when the Thopter enters the battlefield. Flying an army of thopters towards our enemies is fun, and the face of awe and despair from our opponents is what fuels us!
Of course, we can win through other methods as well, two Decoction Modules grant us 2 energy back for every thopter, which means our little flying machines cost a single energy counter (assuming you have at least 3, of course). When enough thopters are achieved you can search for
Chief of the Foundry
with Trophy Mage, this gives our pets +1/+1, and that is often enough to finish the opponent in a few turns.
This deck also heavily relies on ETB effects, so cards like Essence Flux are a must here, this card does wonders when it saves our Virtuoso and grants 3 energy for free (more if you have modules), which in turn means unexpected thopters blocking creatures and screwing up mid-game attacks.Of course, Panharmonicon would work wonders here, feel free to add some if you have them.
A single Decoction Module is not enough for the entire combo, but you can make temporary copies with Saheeli Rai or permanent ones with Saheeli's Artistry, those cloning effects can also bring you powerful creatures from the other side of the board (Works so delightfully against finishers) or your own ETB creatures. Despite costy, a well timed Saheeli's Artistry might turn the tables in your favour, especially if the opponent also has ETB effects, uses Blue/Red or uses Energy.
There's a lot of other mini-combos inside the deck like the obvious Decoction Module + Fabrication Module
or Essence Flux + Maverick Thopterist
, so it's worth to keep out an eye for them.
