Wizards

In case anyone is wondering, this deck is tribal. A deck doesn’t need to have tons of creatures to be tribal. I read somewhere that the tribal definition was that if the deck had 10 or more creatures and 75% or more of them shared a creature type, the deck was tribal. While many tribal decks like to have payoff cards (cards that reward you for playing that tribe, like Death Baron in a Zombie Deck), you don’t technically have to. (My rule of thumb is that a tribe is not generally worth playing if it doesn’t have three or more different payoff cards, but that’s just me).

Like almost all of my decks, this deck is budget, and while suggestions are welcome and appreciated, it would be great if they could be kept to $3 a card or less.

Sage of Epityr- This card is great. It is nice to have a one drop wizard in the deck, an the top deck manipulation definitely helps with Thunderous Wrath. He seems kind of like Ponder 5-8, except he comes with a 1/1 body that can either be used for chump blocking or for beating down with later game with Adeliz.

Stormchaser Mage- I feel like this card is debatably one of the best wizards in MTG. A 1/3 flyer with haste isn’t that bad on its own, and the addition of prowess makes this card insane, especially with Adeliz, the Cinder Wind.

Wee Dragonauts- I just mentioned how prowess was really strong with Adeliz, but in an aggressive deck like this, +2/+0 is much better! This card can close out games very quickly, and is a key player in the deck.

Adeliz, the Cinder Wind- In all honesty, I wouldn’t have even thought of building a wizard Tribal decklist before Dominaria. There just wasn’t enough support. But with Dominaria came Adeliz, and the inspiration for this deck. Adeliz, the Cinder Wind is by far, the best of our wizards. It stacks with the other wizard’s prowess abilities, and buffs itself. Not to mention coming out with a 2/2 flying hasty body, which I think is playable on its own. This card is what wins me games more than anything else.

Lightning Bolt, Wizard's Lightning- In this deck, these cards are almost exactly the same. They both do 3 damage for 1 cmc, and they both seem like auto-includes.

Assault Strobe- Honestly, I’m not sure how this card got printed at common. It doubles my wizard’s power for a turn, which usually wins me the game. Great card.

Thunderous Wrath- 5 damage for 1 mana is an amazing rate, and I think that in the right circumstances, this card can be a bomb, if not game winning. That’s a huge chunk of your opponent’s life, and with the amount of top deck manipulation in this deck: Sage of Epityr, Ponder, we have no trouble miracling it.

Gitaxian Probe- This card is banned in several formats, it so good. It provides essential information about an opponent’s hand, and lets you draw a card, all the while being a free prowess trigger when you’re tapped out on mana.

Ponder- One of the best cantrips there is. Helps you control Wraths, find Lands, and more. Auto-Include in this deck.

Stream of Unconsciousness- The final card in our spell base. It really helps with combat math (making our opponent’s flying or reach creatures smaller), and lets you draw a card. And, you know, if you ever really wanted to rub it in someone’s face how much you beat them, you could play it on your own creature and still win.

Shivan Reef- A dual land with (almost) no drawbacks that enters untapped? Sign me up! This card is awesome, and really helps with the mana of the deck. Plus, the damage doesn’t really matter that much, as you should be able to beat them faster.

Swiftwater Cliffs- Another dual land is pretty useful, and this can make for a decent turn 1 play if you don’t have Sage of Epityr.the life gain can actually be useful too. I’ve seen someone win a game off that lifegain, because it let them survive an onslaught by 1 life and win on their next turn.

Island + Mountain- You kind of need these in a budget deck. Let you get free mana to cast spells. Solid cards, very useful.

This deck is fairly consistent, and from playtesting, can win on turn 4 or 5 fairly easily. I’ve even had a turn 3 win with this deck before. Here’s how:

Opening hand: Stormchaser Mage, 2x Mountain, Lightning Bolt, Assault Strobe, Swiftwater Cliffs. (I had to mulligan a hand with 6 lands and a Wizard’s Lightning before this). I go on the draw.

T1: Draw Swiftwater Cliffs, Play one Swiftwater Cliffs. Pass turn.

T2: Draw Gitaxian Probe. Play Mountain. Play Stormchaser Mage, swing for one.

T3: Draw Thunderous Wrath. Play Mountain. Play Wrath, Lightning Bolt, and Assault Strobe. Play Gitaxian Probe, paying two life. Draw another a Probe, and cast that as well. Stormchaser is now a 6/8 with flying and double strike, opponent is at 11 life from Wrath and Bolt. GG.
